My father is Martin Hoffman, he wrote the music for this poem by Woody Guthrie. My name is Hedy Streiff. Thank you for so beautifully telling the story and singing the song.

Blessings to you. Blessings for your people. Glad we are all family together. We listen. We learn. We care. And no song belongs to one person, often. And thanks to John McCutcheon for his life work.

In the early 70's, my old Mexican nextdoor neighbor showed me photos of his unkle..who died on the plane. Iv sung this song 50 yrs. And racists really don't enjoy engaging in convo with me...ever. Excellent performance. ( Gonzalez was his Tio's last name...and You just spoke it..) Thank you.

from Hedy, Martin's daughter: My father eventually killed himself after he wrote the music for this song. It was too much for him. It was too tragic. He left us by way of self-induced departing from this world to the next. But listen to me. As much as you may feel, and I know some of you feel very strongly about your causes....NEVER, ever, end your life like my father did. Never sell your own talent short. Take what you have and give it to everybody like my father did before he died....and always think about the future. Always strive to become better. Enmesh yourselves in people that will always try to improve people's lives. Don't give into the hate or divisiveness that media is promoting now.

I am a 50 year old Irishman who lives in Australia now and my Aunty sang this song to me when i was literally a baby and I remember every word of nearly every version of this song but without your endeavour would never have known the names of those who inspired this ballad and with no shame this made me cry it is finally settled that those who rode that big aeroplane have finally rested neath the topsoil and now have names except deportees!

@marcuscook3852
@marcuscook3852 2 года назад
@@erichayes4661 How disappointing that you felt it necessary to make such a blatant political statement, and all because the poster indicated he was living in Australia. Whilst I do not support the current Australian government's political views in general, they have by far done much better in fighting Covid than many other countries, including the USA. Here are few statistics for you to ponder. Texas has a similar population to the whole of Australia, yet has had 5, 070, 532 cases, compared to Australia with 1, 395, 181. There have been 75, 270 Covid deaths in Texas, compared to Australia with 2, 518. No one in their right mind would ever consider moving to Texas with these statistics. It has been the action of state and federal governments in Australia that has been successful in keeping the numbers down, although the current surge in number most recently due to the Omicron variant is quite worrying. One again, it is the 'slammed down by government vaccinre [sic]/mask mandates' polices that have been successful in keeping these the numbers down, and I hope they continue until Covid 19 is under control. You stated earlier 'Don't give into the hate or divisiveness that media is promoting now.' This appears to be precisely what you have done. In future, when commenting or replying to a comment on a youtube channel, stick to the theme of the comment, or video you are responding to.

My wife, Hedy Streiff, made my former comment. I allowed her to use my account to make it. Woodie Guthrie sought out her father, Martin Hoffman, to make the music to go with the poetry in this song. Everyone should listen to this.
@erichayes4661
@erichayes4661 2 года назад
But then again, her father was such a virtuoso...even Joan Baez travelled to meet him and get consultations for musical scores to use in her songs. Martin Hoffman's daughter, Hedy , later became a champion flautist and carries her father's musical genes to this day. She isn't published....YET. She would love to meet with you guys and do some flute music to grind with this song.

I love this song because of how this song points out how my people suffer. Woody Guthrie was a great man, and my daughter and I love his songs. I cry every time I hear this song, and I am grateful to Woody for thinking of my peoples suffering and letting the world know about the injustice of it. He obviously had a very beautiful soul. I cry because my father was a migrant farm worker and both my mom and dad are from Mexico. I am grateful that my parents taught me my culture, Spanish, and to never feel less than anyone else because of my race and ethnicity.

They were not deportees. Just transported back to Mexico at the expiration of their working visas. It is just that the newspapers of the days called them deportees in their articles but they were totally legal. It is poignant to actually hear their names, they suddenly appeared before our eyes, real people, just like it was yesterday and not ghosts from 1948. RIP Manuel, Jose, Guadalupe and all. 💐❤️
