John McLaughlin & Carlos Santana (Live at Santa Monica CA. 1973) 

Totally perfection, for me one of the Best albums in the history 🧡

That spiritual jam was out of this world. 🔥 Sri chinmoy the man.

I was there. The concert was part of the 'Schafer Music Festival' in those days, which became the 'Dr. Pepper Music Fest.' shortly after. The two day concert was recorded and packaged as the 'Between Nothingness and Eternity' album. ~ Between Nothingness and Eternity, within its essence, is pretty much what we would expect from their concert repertoire. The music is impactive, rambunctious, and there are even moments of long theatrical voyages that wouldn't feel out of place in a progressive rock setting. The entire album offers a sneak-peek of songs that were recorded during the production of The Lost Trident Sessions, which would remain unreleased until 1999. The performance begins with "Trilogy", which is quite frankly an epically composed piece that revisits styles that we have already heard in their previous two efforts. Opening with the familiar gong percussions that we've encountered several times within their work, Billy Cobham establishes the mood for the overture. John McLaughlin slowly fades into our perception with some light guitar playing, before the other instruments enter into the melodic scenery he's created. The band continues to expand on the melody, with John McLaughlin and keyboardist Jan Hammer taking it upon themselves to perform the solo aspects while the other instruments provide the rhythmic structure. Then, all of a sudden, celestial flourishes begin to exude from Jan Hammer's synthesizer and the music enters an atmospheric plane, while violinist Jerry Goodman takes the spotlight and ornaments this passage with graceful harmonies. Billy Cobham steadily begins to erupt in the background with power and efficacy, as his drumming serves as a catalyst that takes us away from this delicate section and into the energetic display that the band has been dying to perform. ~ The latter half of "Trilogy" is nothing but hyperactive musicianship that loses any sense of restrain. Everyone gets to show off just how far they can go. The song literally becomes a medley of solos, all of them just as invigorating and dextrous as the next. "Sister Andrea" slows things down a bit to exhibit a more mild, Funk-oriented melody. This performance is all about John McLaughlin. After the musical theme is established in the beginning of the song, everyone then silences and moves out of the way to make room for a lengthy and improvised guitar solo. This is quite frankly one of few highly opinionated moments in the entire performance. While some fans praise the fiery and passionate execution of his solos, others feel that, because of its flexible structure, it is indolently composed and only serves as a distraction from the harmonic framework rather than embellish the entity of the piece. ~ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YmNkGQm1YE4.html

@@Heckspawn He was awesome alright. What was that Berry Davis song that had Doug's great bass line. Attitude ......I think it was. His sense of timing, percussion and rhythm was incredible. The bass in his hands became a living thing. I don't know how else to explain it.

I bought a used Santa-Mclaughlin album at a thrift store for 33 cents in the 90s called Let Us Enter The House Of The Lord. I no longer have it but l recall an interpretation of A Love Supreme by Coltrane.

Alan is magnificent not to mention soft machine and who would have thought that Gary husband would play the drums for him and today he does it for McLaughlin, John's spirituality and his humility I think make him the best guitarist alive just as Jeff Beck said, and it would be great to have a good mahavishnu concert with carlos.

Even when Mclaughlin’s notes were fast avant- grade notes to my ears, they still blew my mind more than any other player. As “on the nose” as this sounds, he channels God or the Singularity or something ultra cosmic. If I may say that? Another guy where you hear a few notes and you know who is playing. Acoustic guitar, Mustang/ Duosonic, LP Custom or Gibson dbl neck into a Marshall, 80’s synth guitar, Godin into his preamps… no matter what the tone, he is Mahavishnu John. When he gets going there’s nothing like it.

Luckily, I can only disagree with you. Several times a month I play with people who are very much in this kind of zone... And it means so much.

I agree with you. At the time, this was cool. Carlos never developed harmonically as a guitarist and that's why his jazz attempts with Wayne Shorter, Ndugu and Patrice Rushen weren't going anywhere. If you listen to the Santana/Shorter band, the saddest thing is hearing Carlos follow a Wayne Shorter solo.
