Forever in my mind is this band (sans singer) playing at Harvard U. in 2001.I went with a friend who would be dead in months from Brain Cancer-he knew it, and came to the show anyway (his idea!) During an AMAZING performance, he leaned over, in pain, and said, 'I'm so glad you are here with me hearing this." I'm still getting misty-eyed thinking about it..Shakti and Martin Baker are forever fused together in my mind. RIP brother, 10/8/2001.12 years feels like 2 weeks. Thank U for posting this!

It is at moments like this that I find technology a blessing. That I can sit at home and find this extraordinary music. And then play it through my quality sound system. God Bless ! RU-vid for being here and ktroxie for posting this. The later two songs are simply transcendent. Srinivas's playing is extraordinary and JM's licks are among his most delicious. His solo on Sakhi makes his syn guitar an instrument of holiness. We are fortunate beings who find this.

is the video director Drunk, almost most of the time this shows wrong section especially mandolin part !! There are some beautiful sections where U Srinivas played a gem and video keep on wandering on and about John !! The accompaniment to Shankar is given by Mandolin Srinivas and not John for those who are interested.

Goddamn. John Mclaughlin is so fucking special. There is not a soul out there that could pull off this group of people co-operating to play weird transcultural music that they all believe in. The mutual respect is amazing. You can see he's fully into it and so is everyone in the band. The cohesion is amazing. Anytime anyone tells you the world divides down racial lines punch them in the face (EDit: OK don't. Just admonish them. Maybe that's enough.) and then show them this. We truly are One people. I just lose it watching John. He's the real deal spiritual musician. Luv and Peace.

I love Shakti. Incredible music and performance, sheer creativity and the power that shows how music can transcend and fuse so beautifully in terms of culture are only side issues which are overshadowed by the beauty and majesty of this great spirit of music, which "speaks the unspeakable" and allows you to be transparent to the transcendent.

This is 'Remember Shakti'. I saw this band at the Royal Festival Hall London last November and they were without doubt the finest band I have ever heard or seen. You have to experience this live to get the full impact. They are beyond the ability to play an instrument to the point where they are playing music. Look at the way they are communicating with each other.

+Marvius Maximus Though subjective .. it is very difficult to watch. Love, love the music & musicians .. I have played with John .. and as a musician I want to see what is happening. This edit is in the american "prime time" style .. all about personality & ego. I would appreciate a more encompassing edit so the viewer can experience the communication that takes place between players. Can listen with pleasure .. cannot watch ... and I am aware it is my subjective point of view.
@Gregorypeckory
@Gregorypeckory 8 лет назад
+Curtis Hutchison I don't look at it as being about ego in a negative sense; and I like the fact that we get to see lots of closeups of each player smiling and taking pleasure in each other's playing and company, and I do love watching the hands of players as they create magic. Any band is after all, made of individuals, (all of whom have egos and personalities, in the case of this band, incredibly strong ones) and there is always a sacrifice; show the closeups and miss the bigger shot, or show more wide shots, and miss details. This, like any film, has its flaws, but there are so many great moments that I for one, am delighted that it was made, rather than just an audio recording. Of course, music isn't a visual medium, so I see the value in listening with eyes closed sometimes, but I just love watching great musicians as well as hearing them. You must be pretty damn good yourself, btw; I don't know of any players John's played with that are less than excellent.

Alcohol is like a release of tension. I don't think it enhances music at all. I think it's something you do when you don't play. I'm not pro-drugs at all. Against it 100 percent. I'm a huge fan of these musicians. Don't have time to read all the comments but I just wanted to point out that in your description, the use of "5 Peace band" is inaccurate. That's the name of the band that John McLaughlin and Chick Corea led for one recording and several tour legs.

It's beautiful. The only thing a bit disturbing is the chorus effect on McLaughlin guitar, I really don't understand the choice of this sound. But great 'fusion' music .

Sublime music, & I love'm all, but must agree with you on that - just a touch naff - odd really for such an outstanding and tasteful musician!! .....

They seem to be deliberately avoiding showing U Shrinivas on the camera. Not sure why.

precisely. Strange and unfortunate. Seemed to deliberately avoid him.
