that makes no sense because john married into the family, they’re not related by blood which means you cannot say “talent runs through the family” from this example
Spooky Stork Running Wild he’s definitely largely influenced by him in his life, so it shows how much a persons play style can change no matter how influenced you are by an artist
Petrucci is such a "scanner". It's like he's watching Jake and mentally he's just totally sussed what he's doing...while ripping on his own guitar. He does the same thing at G3. To be at such a level and still wanting to know what everyone else is doing. One of the few guitarist's guitarist around.
stormyandcold That's Petrucci for us all. His curiosity brought DT to whatever level they are now, combining it with the other members knowledge and aspirations. Never satisfied, always learn and try something new, that's where progressive music might take you (mentally).
stormyandcold I think that description fits more perfectly on Guthrie Govan. Just watch any videos of him playing with other guitarists. Petrucci is my all time favorite in rock/metal, but Govan is the Shang Tsung/Encyclopedia of the Electric Guitar. XD
Jakes Ibby looks badass. Not usually a fan of gold hardware but the accent of the matte chocolate finish, natural binding and gold tuners... wow. Most excellent.
Man, Jake is so lucky to have John as an uncle. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love my uncles, but to be able to learn so much of a beautiful thing playing guitar with such love and dedication, I am jealous for sure. I would love to learn to play like Jake and John.
Literally replaying this video for the jams (I've memorized the entire spoken part of the video, thank you DiMazio for uploading this). The jams are at the following times: 0:00-0:41 3:07-4:27 6:47-8:20 ENJOY!
Man are they improvising together or are those actual songs? Jake probably has the classiest looking metal guitar out there. I love it. So elegant looking but simple.
Eh, No. Its beautiful and unqiue, nothing about it is really classy though. Its definetly an "in your face" sort of thing. Blue powder paint, gold hardware, tortoise pickguard... Classy is elegant and simple. Black with a gold touch. Elegant and simple. But I swear, I would do unspeakable things for the TAM100.
awesome, courteous, informative interview. love these dudes, we need more thoughtful interviews about metal and metal music creation like this. excellent video.
00:00 - 00:47 3:07 - 4:28 6:48 - 8:21 I have so much for this song that will never exist outside of this video. Shame too, its absolutely perfect. I never did learn how to edit videos lmao good job
One thing I think that's interesting is that Jake's rig is a tiny Axe FX II rig that's very compact and John's (historically) is a massive rig with many amplifiers and other pieces of analog gear, yet both have a massive respect for each other's sound. (yes I know John now uses an Axe FX II in his rig, but it's just an effects unit and not used for amp tone)
i really love how john petrucci roll, petrucci and gilbert . .yngwie i sucks same things same things, vai is out of this world thou i love them i grew up listening to their works.
Once Periphery's third album comes around, I DEMAND more collaborations with John Petrucci. These little demo songs in this video are incredible, and if "Erised" is any indication, JP and Periphery are a match made in prog heaven.
The music on this video was gorgeous. Also sooo stoked for the new Jake Bowen Ibanez signature to arrive, Periphery fans who play guitar have been waiting this for a long while :D
I just played Jake's JBM100 at a music store, those guys were friendly enough to let me play it for an hour, and that guitar is SOOOO GOOOOOOOOD. It is seriously the best guitar I've ever played.
it's gotta be a weird feeling being paired with john petrucci in one of these videos as a younger guitar player...here's this fucking legend of prog guitar who was writing the under a glass moon solo while you were in grade school and all of the sudden you're here comparing notes on pickup voicings, etc.
It seems the musicality went on high style on the family... I've been a long time Dream Theater fan and recently (thanks to a mention of Petrucci on an interview) i started listening to Periphery and... Damn, what an awesome band, specially if you're not the conservative type you'll definitely enjoy it as much as i am enjoying.
I'll have to admit that DT has definitely reawakened my otherwise dormant side of playing music. By listening to them throughout the years (for me, I started listening to them around the mid-nineties... and ever since). I'm 49 and I've played several different instruments in the past... and have settled upon the guitar (and ocasionally keyboards), now. I guess that I just wanted to say, that I love how a great band can influence and inspire others to follow their "dreams" in/of the musical arena. :)
That moment you realize that the voice at the end of Icarus Lives! was possibly Jake's voice. Lol maybe I'm late and maybe I'm wrong. To me they just sound a lot alike.
They can totally make a song from the first 2 minutes combined with the last bit it's a whole song. If they refined it and made it a thing it would be so epic. Gah!
love the way John is observing both Jake's face and his chord progression while playing his "obvious patterns" - planning a way to hit the sweet spot when it comes - not knowing when though :D
John was probably the biggest influence on me in terms of getting me to really want to learn the guitar, now after 8 or so years, Jake and his band are a major influence on my writing style; and because of that, I find this video to be a kind of special...to me at least.
