John the legend, and Tosin is a class act. He talked about getting different sounds from a guitar than just 'guitar sounds', which is an idea I'm particularly keen on (his 8-strings are naturally one reason for that breadth of sounds). He was trying to think of other instruments that you could 'channel' with guitar like he does in his style, to me at times the sounds he's getting are almost Dulcimer-esque, which is of course a wonderful and unique percussive Chinese ethic instrument that you hear so often in their music. Devin's solo was gnarly too though, that crazy open-C tuning is off the chain... Wish I had the resources to have a bunch of different guitars all set up to play in such crazy tunings!

A lot of factors define a amazing guitar player. It's rare that a musician can use an instrument purely expressively, innately and seemingly without thinking. Devin is one of those musicians. Guitar wise. Devin is not on the other twos level. When it comes to writing music he is on another level. Not to mention being one of the greatest rock/metal vocalists ever.

I really hope these guys are as cordial and chill in 'real life' as they appear to be here in this setting. I rarely play guitar anymore but would simply be awestruck to just be sitting there vibing with their mad skills. Titans. Unreal.

I hope for the same. In some ways, it's strange to see these guys together because in some ways their music, their backgrounds and even the makeup of their fanbases would be quite different. I feel a little bit for Devin (not that he needs my defence in any way!) in that while he's a accomplished guitar, he doesn't come at the instrument as a shred or means of getting his songs across. He was into shred when he was younger (he's told us) but that seems to have very much retreated in the decades since and clearly his strength lies in his incredible voice and his songwriting. I mean, I totally find it fascinating to see Devin with these guys, I just hope it's not 'jarring' or strange for him to be up with these fret-fiddlers. (And I'm not knocking Petrucci or Tosin ONE BIT, just sharing my take on this particular collective)

@@DanielVerberne I feel like their fanbases aren't necessarily that different. I mean I'm a fan of all three players, because I love prog rock/metal. But yeah Devin's playing is definitely less 'calculated' than either Patrucci or Abasi. They're all ridiculously gifted players in their own way. Lots of talent on display here

Never forget Devin was part of Vai's Sex & Religion, there is definitely Vai's spirit in his playing, which is very artful (so to say)

While you're looking at Devin shred, look at tosin. Within a few moments of Devin playing he totally freezes to listen with all of his brain, not even his eyes move. That's how good Devin is, you just want more and the more you get the better it gets.
