My mom's family was from Maywood,they always called him little Johnny the mailman's son(some of them were also proud of Fred Hampton being a hometown boy).

I wonder how Jason is doing. Guy was a master at subtleties and I hope he's still strumming that guitar wherever he is

Thank you so much for posting this. As a huge fan of John and DAC, this song and its history has always been of interest to me. I had no idea John performed it at shows (or at least this one).

John Prine was the co-writer, for you don't have to call me by my name!!
@Ben-O25
@Ben-O25 2 года назад
@@robertnowak9650 I knew he was the uncredited co-writer, but I've always heard that he didn't like it, hence why he didn't want songwriting credit for it. I just assumed he didn't perform it at his shows if he didn't like it so seeing him perform it live is interesting.

I had heard Prine wanted to go uncredited for You Never Called Me but jeez this adds a new layer. I sense a story we're probably never getting the full version of. But let this be a lesson, don't beef with crafty song writers. They'll run your ass over with a train for posterity.

I always took the line mom and David drove the ruck into the train as David ruined this song and killed it. He seemed to be very anti what coe was about. It makes a lot of sense but I’m reading too much into it.

David Alan Coe always played this at his concerts and told a story about it, just a little different than this. Listen to his version if you haven't, it's also great, one of those 'everybody in the audience sings' kinda song at any DAC concert.

The Steve goodman version is the best performance in my opinion. The one with the cowboy hat where hes clean shaven. Check it out if ya ain't seen it.

First time I heard him attempt to sing a song. He seems to be like Kris Kristofferson a great writer. Dam Kris Kristofferson is maybe the greatest writers ever. This guy must have been a good studio pitch guy to get real singers to grab a song. Kris was a great writer and many people sang his songs. . He had no voice to speak about. But a nice style .I. Loved why me lord. . can't think of anything else I liked by Kris. But his songs by other great artist. He was good as a highwayman because Waylon was great. I loved the hywaymen group .. only because of Waylon. . but the guy who sings thru his nose . Or johnny cash. Ahh no. It should have been called Waylon's hywaymen.The strong voice among the 4.
