Richard Fleischer’s thriller achieves classic noir status thanks to Earl Felton’s Oscar nominated script-the dialog is so hard boiled it sizzles. The terrific Charles McGraw plays a cop protecting a gangster’s girlfriend train-bound for the grand jury-assorted assassins and gangsters have other ideas. As the unmanageable mobster’s moll, the great Marie Windsor is one of the most duplicitous dames in noir history. RKO boss Howard Hughes liked this quickie so much that he kept it on the shelf for two years while pondering whether to to remake it with Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell. Luckily he decided against it.

It's entertaining. The hard-boiled pulpy dialog is right on.

A great movie -- the short running time allows sustained tension without straining the conceit of the train setting. Thanks for the trailer; John Sayles's Lone Star is another great movie.

This movie is hard to fault. It's an ideal mix of script, director, cast, and exemplifies what could be done on a B-level budget. The dialogue cited by Mr. Sayles--the "60 cent special"--is one of the best lines ever written for a movie. A must-see.

William Friedkin said the car full of mobsters following train was the key inspiration for the famous car chase in The French Connection.

I've seen this one, and the remake with Gene Hackman. I remember much preferring the original. But it's been a while since I saw either. Perhaps it's time for a rewatch of both.

Maybe this can get a proper blu now. Fleischer was solid workhouse. Many great films in various genres

Fleischer, like Robert Wise, is the sort of director that we don't have anymore. A great craftsman who managed to direct classics in various genres.

Arguably it's the best B-film ever made outside of Casablanca

Casablanca had a 1-million dollar budget. That’s hardly B-movie budget in 1942😂😂 today yea B. In 1942 big budget. Sheesh man.
