William Wellman, known for “adult” westerns like The Ox-Bow Incident, continues in that mode with an Old West fable based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Gregory Peck and Richard Widmark are outlaws who find sanctuary in a ghost town ruled by Anne Baxter and her prospecting grandfather. Sumptuous black and white cinematography by Joseph MacDonald who specialized in film noir (Panic in the Streets, Pickup on South Street).
As always, you can find more commentary, more reviews, more podcasts, and more deep-dives into the films you don't know you love yet over at the Trailers From Hell mothership:

Joe McDonald was the director of photography on this, just around the same time he shot MY DARLING CLEMENTIME for John Ford, and it looks every bit as awesome.

Good and action and characters ! You feel the heat and a you need a drink of water the way Wellman shoots the way the cowboys look and feel in the desert.

I actually liked the ending. Just as I liked Howard Hawks's much criticized ending of Red River.

Yep! I do the same thing with Nightmare Alley. Skip the hokey happy ending and end the film about 2 minutes sooner Real Art doesnt leave a sugar sweet aftertaste

Right you are, the last scene of "Yellow Sky" is a cop-out ending. Unreal and totally at odds with what had happened before in this movie. Another movie wrecked at the end by Breen's crap 1934 Production Code that required that crime must be shown not to pay.
