The West Point Museum brings one of John Sedgwick's Civil War era hats to his monument on the Gettysburg Battlefield. Sedgwick was the highest ranking United States general to be killed in action during the Civil War.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

Sadly, John Sedgewick is largely remembered for his almost-last-words, "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." But that also shows his level of personal courage.

Here is what's really crazy.The Guy who shot Gen.Sedgewick,was a Sgt.Brown from a Ga.regiment. In peacetime,Brown worked at a stone quarry.After the war,the quarry where the stone/marble for Gen.Sedgewick's monument came from,was the quarry where Mr.Brown worked.

I want to thank you for creating this channel on the history of the civil war, most notably Gettysburg. I visited several times at the battlefield at Gettysburg, and I'm always in awe and sad and humbled at the same time.

Sedgewick also has a monument at West Point, where the statue was cast with spurs that actually spin. The tradition for more than a century there is that spinning his spurs in full parade uniform at midnight before a class final guarantees that the cadet doing the spinning will pass the class.

I remember coming past this monument as Gettysburg last year! Me and my Dad didn't know anything about him really, but I remember him pointing out the name as we went by.

I stopped at the Sedgewick statue this past September. The hat wasn't there, but it was a beautiful drive around the battlefield.

When General Grant learned of Sedgwicks death at Spotsylvania he was heard to say that his death was worse than the loss of a whole division

NPS says General Sedgwick was killed by artillery. Others say a sharp shooter. Is there an accurate consensus, or is the picture muddy on the weapon that killed him?

Im almost positive actress Kyra Sedgwick (wife of Kevin Bacon) is a descendant of his, as was Edie Sedgwick. Edie was a famous model and actress, and friends with Andy Warhol. A movie was made about her. And General Sedgwick himself was a descendant of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Old Connecticut blue-blood family with quite a lineage.

At 3:56, there is a brief mention about the general's personality without detail. The sweet and friendly 'Uncle John' actually is a myth.

I'm guessing that if you had to live the life of a slave in the 1800's, you would have a radically different feeling about the confederacy.

Obviously you guys liked the General. But the video is about his hat right? Or probably his hat. Made by whom? Size? what's with the wide brown border on a black hat that looks sewn on afterwards or repaired when he was using it? Is that hat cord correct for a Union Army General Officer then? Next time, a little more info on the item and less babble about the General. It's a video about a Civil War General Officers hat.

Yea, I tend to agree. it was nice to bring it out to display but I think to these guys that information that you talk about is just something that they don't know nor are interested in. A true collector though would be interested in that. A lot of civil war experts today seem to know very little about the actual artifacts themselves.
