Epson video presentation with John Sexton celebrates the black-and-white print. In this video Sexton shares his start in photography, working with Ansel Adams, and his amazing body of work produced with traditional Black-and-White film, chemistry and paper.
“To many, the Black-and-White print is the very definition of photography,” said Dan (Dano) Steinhardt, marketing manager, Epson America, Inc. “We wanted to capture what Black-and-White has meant emotionally for generations of photographers and also provide a digital workflow foundation as we celebrate the Black-and-White print, be it traditional or digital.”

I had a workshop with Ansel in 1975. I also have three of your prints. Now 67 years old I reflect back on my 50 years as a photographer. So blessed by my life capturing...my life.

Hiram - Somehow I JUST NOW saw your kind comment. Thank you for your very kind words. I hope all is well with you. Where was the workshop held that you attended in 1975. Maybe we met at that time. I was an assistant at the 1975 Ansel Adams Yosemite workshop in June. Thanks again!

Thank you so very much for this. Your work is, of course, wonderful. Thank goodness for Mr. Lee in that he clearly recognized your talent. Thank goodness for Ansel Adams too. It is very obvious to me that you have absorbed everything available from your “tutors” … and then simply made it your own; and in the process taken traditional photography to higher levels.

The best piece of wisdom from John Sexton comes at the very end of the video, and is advice that he elaborates on in the video he did for Epson: the last step in making a photograph is to live with the print for some time. After living with the print, you are able see what improvements are needed, or if the print is worth keeping at all. Not only does it help you develop the print, it also helps you to develop as a photographer.

Yeah no secret. But you always put your shadow on zone IV.

Thanks for your comment. I just now saw it. I don't ALWAYS place my shadows on ANY specific Zone. I often use Zone IV, sometimes III-1.2, sometimes III, and on rare occaisions Zone II. I have also placed shadows as high as Zone V. It depends on how I visualize the scene. Remember, with negative film the one 'mortal' sin is underexposure, so try to avoid that. Good luck!
