John Wayne's UNCONTROLLABLE Addiction Cost Him EVERYTHING
It’s not news that John Wayne is one of the most iconic actors of the 20th century. In fact, back in 1999, the American Film Institute recognized him as one of the greatest male stars of classic American cinema. He successfully earned this title through his memorable roles in films from Hollywood's Golden Age, particularly in Westerns and war movies. However, what most people are unaware of is that despite all the fame and Hollywood success, John Wayne’s life was wrecked to the ground in the twinkle of an eye, and that was all thanks to his toxic addiction. But to understand his journey fully, let's go back to where it all began, 1907.

They all drank and smoked back then. Cigarette companies were able to lie and tell people they were harmless and even claimed they were good for you. I understand why those people did it just don't understand why people do it now. Duke lived a good life and made it to 72 that's not bad considering.

I am a John Wayne fan. Your version of his encounter with the draft during ww2 is the most complimentary of any I have heard. Many have, out and out, called him a draft dodger and war profiteer . I prefer to believe that the truth lay somewhere down a middle path. While his family status and broken collar bone were legit deferments at the beginning of the war, I don't believe he actively campaigned one way or the other about joining the service, but allowed the natural flow of events to take place which greatly enhanced his career. Many say that ,later in life ,he did regret never serving and that was the source of the zealous patriotism that he developed. He is no longer here to put to the question.

It is a shame that addictions to nicotine and alcohol killed him. My family suffered from these addictions/diseases too. Cancer killed my dad at 59. He was a WWII Amy combat veteran.

When John Wayne invited me on board his yacht wild goose where I spent entire day. John Wayne giving me personal tour of his yacht. JW didn't light a cigarette the entire time I was aboard. But when I was face to face with Ben Johnson I said, my dad thinks you're the best horseman in all Hollywood! JW raised his glass an toasts my father. Here, here, you're father is a smart man! The drinks were flowing in ten ounce glasses of takilla!

He liked to have a few drinks on the back of his boat. Remember him telling my brother and I to f off when we buzzed by in our tender. Don't remember any issues at bar. Everyone liked he went to bar alone or with a friend and said hello and chatted. This was up in Canada where he and Bing Crosby often vacationed

Duke was so self-centered that he would not listen to anyone. The dangers of cigarettes and alcoholic were well publicized, but the Duke listened to no one but himself! Sad!!!!

He was a big tough guy but I wouldn't exactly call him a "good man." I sure like some of the movies he was in. I own a few on blue-ray. His acting in "The Searches" and "The Shootist" were excellent. His politics were to the right of Attila the Hun. Wayne supported McCarthyism and the Vietnam war. Not my cup of tea.

I was born in 58. What I didn't like about John Wayne was that he was pushed onto us endlessly. And made a hero. No matter how bad his behavior was in the movies it was justified. Overcome the bad guys and the woman is thrilled to have themselves taken into his arms. He seemed so mechanical to me. Again and again. C'mon, let the Indians win!!!. Just overkill. But people literally worshipped him. "Don't you dare say nothin' bad about the Duke." Ugh!. For whatever reason he was a constant in our-baby boomers-youths.

Yeah right for sure!! But there were so many actors/actresses who thought they were mankinds gift to entertainment society & todays bunch are even worse & consequently although a staunch movie fan myself, I rarely go to movies these days as there is so much sheer & utter shit in them & of course starred by so many mere amateurs who think they really are better than what we had yesterday!!
