Now the movie begins with John Wick killing The Elders replacement who tells him that the only way he will find peace is in death. This very much foreshadows the events of the ending and it also explains why John has to particpate in a duel. The High Table is described very much as being like a Hydra in that if you cut off one head another one will appear. Just in the same way that the Elder has been replaced, all the members of the High Table can be as well and thus John will run out of bullets before they run out of heads.
The movie in a way is very much about redemption and him diverting the fate that has been given to him. John is said as being someone who brings death to everything that he touches but in the end he gives Caine a new life with his daughter. This is a similar sort of thing to what Sofia had in the third film and in that we discovered that she too had a daughter that she couldn't have a life with due to the demands of the High Table.
John sees first hand how much his quest for revenge is killing his friends and in the end he realises that it all stops if he passes away which we see happen in the final few scenes. Now I will be talking about whether I think the character is actually dead or not later on but there is a lot going on in the movie that I think we have to talk about first to give context to those final few scenes.
Keanu Reeve has talked with the Hollywood reporter about what that ending really meant and there is a lot to discuss in terms of symbolism and metaphor.
The John Wick series has always been laced with the idea of mythology and this is seen in every film. Charon pulls from ancient mythology, Wick pulled Rosary beads out of a book at the start of 3, Dantes inferno was mentioned and Winston was given 7 days to get his affairs in order. John himself is based on John the Baptist and a baptism is very much seen as a cleansing in which past sins are forgotten. The first movie opened with him putting his past behind him but he was pulled back into the life.

Screenplay writer Finch stated in an interview that “What I will say is that we never actually see him dying. We see a [grave] plot. What happened in between is up for interpretation." Director Stahelski stated that most of what matters about making another John Wick entry is whether series star Keanu Reeves wants to do one, and whether he and Reeves have enough great ideas for new stunts and new set pieces to make another chapter meaningful. He described the process of coming up with new John Wick movies in an interview with Collider, saying: “Literally every Wick has been written or at least conceptualized in Japan at the Imperial Hotel, with me and Keanu on our press tour. It starts with a few glasses of Yamazaki or Hibiki [whisky], and next thing you know, we’re like, ‘I didn’t know we could do this.’ And that’s how we start writing them.” Then, Lionsgate studios may want another one, too.

@Kiflin the movie itself isn’t unwatchable, the dialogue is literal npc interactions, even when john wick is in the rave, people don’t notice the fighting, or when the car scene happens a car randomly stops and no one is in the car, or the cars just keep going while it’s getting shot up to hell, also WHERE IS THE POLICE

The final steps scene was very well done. It was mimicking Johns ascension to peace, out of the hell to finally be at peace. With all the goons coming down the stairs and trying to stop him. There were times of him being dragged back into hell but he kept fighting to ascend towards the top. Then with his death, sitting on the stairs, not at the top but near enough at the top is perfect due to the fact he overcame the fight, made peace but walked away from the gates of heaven due to not feeling worthy enough, but worthy enough to be just outside. He just wanted a peaceful life with his wife (sorry for the poetry) from the start of the saga, and can finally do that but with the fact that there was a lot of bloodshed and friends lost because of it, he deems himself not worthy to sit in heaven, just on the outside.

Donnie Yen is the real star of this movie for me. His lines and delivery are so great. "It's nice just to sit with a friend." And his smirk throughout the card scene while holding up the gun, just so cool. In fact, I don't think I've seen anyone this freaking cool since Chow Yun Fat back in his Hong Kong John Woo period.

It's a terrible idea to over-explain John's past. It ruins the intrigue, mystery and coolness of the character. The Han Solo movie over-explained how he got his name, gun, clothes etc and it really harmed the character.

She could totally get a whole training arc leveling up to be able to match him that would be a perfect excuse to visit and learn more about how the world. I’m trying to tell myself it would be cool but I honestly thought her wanting revenge on Caine was the worst part of the movie and I’m finding it hard to care about. Her dads death had 0 effect on the plot as a whole because he never answered caines question and Caine stopped asking after he downed him the second time. Caine literally gave her dad like 3 chances to straight up walk away when he saw he was injured, with no interference on her end either, and her dad felt the need to die. Yes you could say he was “trying to protect John” but he was already injured and knew he was gone die and so did Caine so he basically suicided for … literally nothing. It wasn’t like Caine just straight up cut the man down as he was begging to run away. Idk somone please convince me it would be cool, cause I’m struggling

@@tbducky4136 Not going to convince you of a "cool spinoff" but I'd say her vengeance is misplaced and Shimazu didn't suicide for nothing. He knew that by helping Wick and not showing fealty to the high table, the response was excommunicado for him, where they were going to keep on hunting him down until he was dead. As a way to get to him, this would put Akira in the crosshairs as well. He suicided himself to protect her and had Caine do it because of honor.

@@JC_2311 but John literally was hunting the high table and he knew this. he literally could have just left and nothing would have come of it after John killed everyone, akira went into hiding after the incident they could hav whist hid together or with the Bowery. no one knew he was alive accept John and Caine, and Caine wasn’t going to turn him in. He literally only had to hide and survive as long as it took John to do what he did, and before you say “he didn’t know if John could succeed” he had enough faith into him to essentially put his entire kingdom at risk, so saying he had enough faith in John is by no means a stretch

@@tbducky4136 This is where we disagree. You think Shimazu had faith in John eliminating the HT and that's why he accepted him into the Continental. I think he accepted him for a much simpler reason, because John was his brother and his loyalty, as such, demanded that. Even Hiroyuki Sanada, the actor, said that. Consequences for his actions came second. In essence he sacrificed himself for both John and his daughter just as John sacrificed himself for Caine and his daughter. You say nobody would know he was still alive...Vincent to Caine: Where's the body? Caine: Incinerated sir...Vincent: Incinerated? A body can do that??? Caine: Yep...All joking aside it's just thoughts and feelings at this point unless Chad expounds on the death. On another note, it's really interesting how possibly powerful the Continentals are. Rewatching the end of JW3 and the parley scene where negotiations were had to avoid a prolonged war. Winston threatened the Adjudicator and she knew it wasn't an idle one.

This was easily the best film in the series hands down. The ending felt 100% deserved and it was beautiful. Wick's Arc had a pretty good ending so hopefully they don't bring him back for a 5th movie. I would like to see what happens between Caine and the other girl in the 5th movie if it ends up happening.

Come on… the first film had the best music, plot and it tried to follow some physics and the actions had weight, like when Wick got hit by a car he was captured… even in the 3rd movie the circle’s armored guys was kinda scary now they fcking kick them and they feel pain like come on. John falls from idk how much, gets hit by cars etc and keeps going. Nothing had weight in the movie idk about u but i could never tell if the hit he took is a big one or he ll just get up and kill 30 more like nothing happened (fall vs the fat poker man)

the top down action scene were the best part in this movie. And, i believe it was the first time they do that type of action in this series, also with the dragon breath shotgun effect that was awesome, not to mention the music choice in that scene.

Loved the Paris fight scene choreographed with all the cars - insane and I loved it! Stunningly beautiful cinematography for so many of these fight sequences. A lot of good characters. Well done 👍🏻

Just saw the movie tonight. Loved it. I’m sure I’ll watch it again soon. When I saw the people dancing during the fight scene. And the bodies disappearing on the stairs. I couldn’t help but think of a theory I saw that connects John Wick to Neo as another tier inside the matrix. Thanks for the video. Enjoyed it as well.

Every time John got hit by a car, the audience sounded like Chris Tucker with a "Daaaaaammn!". I definitely caught the reference to the Warriors movie and it was smooth. I'm curious to see why Mr. Nobody has a book that tells him secrets and where he got it from.

I am so glad that you addressed the people in the club. The whole time I was only focused on the extras and they would see the violence and then just go back to dancing for the whole fight sequence and only when the big guy comes back to life for a sec do they scream and start to run

This 4th chapter did exactly what seemed like the most likely. All 4 chapters are equally perfect but slightly different. I hope a prequel is created for the foundation of the Way. Definitely watching it again in the theater then buying a DVD. My score is 10 /10 for all the chapters.

@@coolmangamer1256 that's a statement of an opinion that did not personally attack or insult anybody here. And a bunch of friends I went with to watch it, felt more or less the same. Also saw some people leaving the movie before its end, but that's might be due to its length. Anyway, maybe I've had too great expectations. But out of elements that I loved the most in the previous movies - Keanu - simple plot - awesome action scenes - sarcasm - awesome score, I got only Keanu left in this one. Besides multiple plot choices I did not buy, the movie lacks sarcasm and has a lot of pseudo philosophy, much more complicated plot, and I cannot name a single action scene here that blew my mind like bike chase or knifes or pencil fight in the previous chapters. So that's why I completely did not like, sorry. Even though I'm a fan and will spend my money on 5th part as well if it comes out. also music wise was very disappointed.

There was some genuinely funny moments in there too amongst those action scenes, my particular favourite being when Mr Wick whacked a goon in the nuts with the nunchucks after faking out a hit to the head in the Tokyo Continental.

The way I see it John intentionally lost to Caine to give him a second chance in his life to be with his daughter at the cost of his life. He could have won and return back to normal. In the end he lived his life imprisoned by his rage and vengeance, and died in tranquility as a free man.

Saw it last night and I like this one the best. As soon as they showed that woman DJ getting ready to speak into the microphone, I immediately knew what movie they were referencing. I would have liked to have a little background on Mr. Nobody. The John Wick series is the best action movie franchise made thus far. With all the action and killing and hyping Wick up as some mythical killer, this is still one of the greates love stories ever made. The nmajor character just happens to be a very violent man.

No one talks about how Clancy Brown's character has facial scarring ( like Fishburn) and is missing his finger like John Wick. That tells you so much about how his journey has rivaled these other characters. He obviously effed up somewhere along the way, got punished, and then sought retribution with the High Table.

Good summary and thoughts here. But, regarding John being dead I would like to point out something key no one has appeared to yet highlight. Both John and Caine clearly had to be on the same page for the duel, deliberately ''clipping'' each other and avoiding any organ's. The three shots Wick took were not kill shots or fatal and he is clearly tougher than that. They have clearly left it wide open to decide either way so that Keanu can either bow out now or come back.

My theory is a little bit of a stretch, but here it is. John says to make his gravestone say “John, Loving Husband.” His grave actually says “John Wick, Loving Husband” This could mean that John, the man, didn’t die, but instead John Wick, the Baba Yaga, did instead. He’s out there somewhere, just not as John Wick.

Did anyone else notice The Matrix and The Devil's Advocate reference? The scene where Keanu sits at the station and waits for Lawrence Fishburne's character seemed like a reference to Matrix Revolutions where Neo is in a coma. When the song Paint it Black starts playing during the chase scene at the end. The same song plays in The Devil's Advocate when its all chaotic. Could just be a coincidence.

I didnt watch the movie yet but I was too curious abt the movie and I went and read the ending. Actually I didnt expect anything that happens in this movie. I thought that john would live peacefully and shimazu and his daughter too. I was so sad when I heard Both of them died. But Ima still going to watch the movie.
