I think you had to take Segovia as he was on the day: certainly a genius, certainly warm hearted deep down: you can see that from his autobiography of his early years. However he had the Latin passionate temperament: won't suffer those who upset him or or cross him, probably hard on students but deep down a good man. Funnily enough It is Parkening who I think has carried on the Segovia tradition. I think he still plays Ramirez traditionally braced guitars whereas Williams has gone down thr Smallman route with its distinct sound and David Russell for a deeper, darker sound with his Dammann double top. Parkening is the one who sounds most like Segovia today.
Which publicist created this edited 'puff', leaving out J.W.'s more recent criticism of his (then) "god". The future of the classical guitar had already been "settled" by Julian Bream and remained thus until his recent retirement.
JulianJules Yepes is always left out, misrepresented or insulted by this clique and their self-aggrandising stories. They are so full of themselves and so out of touch with reality it is unbelievable. "Segovia created a repertoire"!? There was no Tarrega? No Coste? No Mertz? No Sor? No Giuliani? Etc. Etc. If they were to say Segovia helped to bring about an early modernist repertoire, that would be honest. But they are too noncommittal and too slippery even to do that.
Most of those are still alive! I find it impossible to say who is the best giutarist as each has a different style and sound using different guitars. I personally like David Russell's sound, love JOhn Williams' playing but not his choice of guitar and have found wonderful recordings from many lesser known guitarists. This is what makes the classical guitar so exciting for me: so many different luthiers and sounds. The future of the guitar is indeed bright.
@@caelinadrust8272 Segovia had a low opinion of Yepes, but I've never understood why, since Segovia held Bream in high regard. Bream had a completely different style from Segovia and never took a single lesson with Segovia. Go figure.
