Anthony Puhl It was! I’ve played with lots of stars in the classical music world, but John Williams is the Jedi Master. We were all totally star struck.
“Without John Williams, bikes don’t really fly, nor do brooms in Quidditch matches, nor do men in red capes. There is no Force, dinosaurs do not walk the Earth, we do not wonder, we do not weep, we do not believe.”
This was super hard for George to do because he is most definitely a socially awkward introvert. But Carrie's passing hit us all so hard, I'm glad he stepped up to the plate and talked to the fans here. You can hear his voice crack here and there so I know it was very difficult for him, but great respect to him for doing it.
The "Help me Obi Wan Kenobi" speech still makes me tear up when she says it. Great tribute to her mom. Such a tragic loss, and even more so because Carrie's own mother died the following day, no doubt of a broken heart.
And today I came back to hear John Williams play the STAR WARS theme because I just got the news that I am now a great aunt. This video is a celebration of STAR WARS and the life of Carrie Fisher, but the music is just so right for new life too. So I'm listening to this because I have a new "great" niece, daughter of my youngest nephew and his wife. The baby was just born this evening.
It was amazing, for sure. We had also played with Mr. Williams conducting when Harry Potter opened at Universal. That was cool, too, but playing Star Wars with him conducting was so exciting. We didn't know until the night before that he would be conducting when he showed up half way through our rehearsal with a "regular" conductor.
the look on John's face as the theme music started and he heard the crowd. thats a man that appreciates the art he's made and the impact its had on peoples lives.
He’s an extremely humble man. Like most musicians, he wears his heart on his sleeve and never thinks he’s achieved perfection except in moments like this
@@peterweatherley7669 Hans Zimmer says that he always wants to tweak some little things after his work is done. These people are never 100% happy with their work and that's good. That's the artist's spirit.
@@Bearical that's not necessarily true. Artists are very different from to the other in all fields. Some are very good at letting go and being content with what they've created. Some are very happy with some of their works. For example, you have Harrison Ford who was NEVER that big of a Star Wars fan - but you had Mark Hammill who was and is as big of a fan as the rest of us. Ford just saw Han Solo as work. Another role. Mark always exudes tremendous pride and love for Luke, his role he played, and the movies they were. Williams really does strike me as proud of what he accomplished and doesn't feel the need to change anything but rather play it like it was/is.
I love the reaction the audience had when they saw John Williams. His music lifted SW to what it is and always will be.. Lucas was right, he made the secret sauce to SW.
Lucas said in one interview that he had very high expectations when he made Star Wars, and the only thing that exceeded his expectations was the music of John Williams.
I thought the smirk was, "That's the most involuntary cheering I've ever heard. They know they're supposed to be quiet, but they hear that ONE note with a triangle behind it and everything breaks loose."
The opening theme will always be remember by many, especially by the Star Wars fans. The theme is truly magnificent. Big respect with the maestro Mr. John Williams and the musicians. He’s truly a Legend 😇🙏
You can REALLY tell that George does not relish the thought of talking in public. But, he did it anyway, and my hat's off to him for that. You could also hear him almost choke up a little at the very beginning. Still such a shock. I really hope her part in SW:TLJ is worthy of her and her character. Oh, and John Williams is THE MAN!
That me sequels were absolutely horrific...but that doesn’t change how AMAZING the originals are, of course without John Williams the magic wouldn’t have been half as great. They should’ve just left it alone
When Billy started reciting Leia's message... man, that gets me. Carrie knew that thing like the back of her hand. She could probably say it backwards if she had to.
14:05 I LOVE the look on his face at this moment. It's the look of his realization that the culmination of his life's work is so incredibly and wonderfully appreciated. I like to think, in that moment, that he got to see Star Wars fans' raw reaction to one of the music scores that raised generation (or two).
It's actually 3 generations now, my Dad was in school when Star Wars came out, I was in school when the prequels came out and now my kids are in school growing up enjoying those two trilogies!
In Cinema, there is no greater conductor and composer than John Williams. Through his scores, we have believed in magic and wizards, scene the awe of dinosaurs roam the earth once more, watched as a boy, a princess and a ruffian save an entire galaxy, and teach us that our wildest dreams are possible.
I'm starting a time stamp post for the different tracks. Feel free to add in suggestions and help me out on this. 9:14 Princess Leia's Theme 14:03 Main Title / Rebel Blockade /Runner Medley 15:41 Imperial Attack 20:53 Imperial March
John Williams IS Star Wars, just as Carrie was Princess Leia. This is so tender and beautiful. Billie's words were touching as well. It's clear she carries a great deal of her mother within her.
I get the chills of the Star Wars music John Williams has created. It is soooo beautiful, emotional, magical... it is pure magic. It allows us to dream, to be inspired, to simply put... smile. Thank you John, for giving us real magic. Rest In Peace, Carrie. Truly our Princess, always.
You know what? Sometimes we think that certain emotions depends on associations - I mean, these were the Star Wars musics, I pretty much grew up watching those movies - but most of the time with John Williams it's quite the opposite... those feelings were *that* strong back then, thanks to his powerful and imaginative soundtrack... when I listen to these themes I don't think to any particular moment of the movies, it's more like listening to some condensed Čajkovskij's Symphony. Williams is truly one of the greatest composer of the 20th century.
12:11 Just amazing, only John Williams is able to produce a piece of music that has touched the souls of millions. Carrie lives on whenever we hear this track and it’s truly touching. May the force always be with her.
I really didn’t enjoy this sequel trilogy. But the one highlight I had to look forward to was John Williams. He’s so brilliant his music is heavy and fills me with emotions. He is the GOAT.
The sequels were alright overall, but enjoyable, IMO. But I, along with the vast majority of SW fans can agree on is that John Williams made some god-tier music for the movies. This man can do no wrong.
Listening to the beauty of John Williams astonishing music just had me in total tears in less than a minute... "Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those who transform into the Force." Because the Force will be with her. Always.
On a side note . . . John Williams is as adept at conducting a rowdy audience as he is with an orchestra! A finger to his lips is all is needed! Respect is obvious here!
Princess Leia is my sentimental favorite Star Wars character, because as a 4-year-old girl in 1977, I admire this beautiful, dark haired woman who is this badass, tough warrior and hero. She fought along side the big boys. No! These big men, Chewbaca, a droid and R2D2. Billie’s beautiful and what a beautiful fashion tribute to her mother’s iconic role. I was moved to tears when Billie said Princess Leia’s first lines in her first scene in the original film.
I know it's like this for alot of people but I just wanna share why John Williams' music means so much to me. I saw my first star wars movie at 8 years old. I watched all the movies in the span of about a week at that time (in order, mind you). I played all the video games. The original battlefront games, lego star wars, force unleashed, and I'm still playing Battlefront II despite its many flaws. This music is quite literally the soundtrack of my life. These songs and scores have been with me from a very young age. When I hear them, I know I am hearing a piece of timeless music that means so much to so so many people. I am so glad that Star Wars is a part of my life and I am so thankful to my Dad for introducing me to Star Wars and answering all my Star Wars questions when we were watching all the movies together. I'll always be thankful to my Dad for that. These songs still reach the 8 year old kid inside me today and bring back so many good memories. I would always watch the movies (usually the Original Trilogy) on the portable dvd player we had in our car when we took long trips. I remember when my grandmother gifted me the box set of the original trilogy. It was the best gift I ever received to this day it sits on my shelf in my bedroom 12 years later. This music captures a part of me that will never change. My love for this franchise, through thick and thin, is unedning, and this music really is and always will be the soundtrack of my life.
Thomas Daniel I literarily agree with everything you just said. Carrie, Mark, and Harrison have touched my life everyday. when I found out about Carries passing, I cried. My screen on my phone goes between those three. I write how many days Carrie has been gone on my calendar. I watch Carries “Wishful Drinking,” everyday when I have extra time. There had not been one night in a long time where I have not fallen asleep to this soundtrack. R.I.P Carrie Fisher ❤️
Amazing moment when those curtains open Leia's theme comes in, with John Williams there conducting. Would loved to have been there, saw it live during the stream at least.
I saw Rogue One the day before her death. When she appeared on screen at the very end, I started weeping. At the time she was still unconscious and seeing her saying "hope" was like a sign that maybe everything was going to be just fine. I miss her.
It doesn't matter where I am or what I'm doing, Maestro Williams music gives me chills. I hope he knows what a thrill his music is and what it means to all of us. Bless you, Mr. Williams.
This just goes to show John Williams completely understands not only his art, but the characters and themes his art portrays as well. 12:11 is a perfect example. The high pitched strings are a call to Leia's sensitive and caring nature, with the horns reminding you of her much bolder side, her willingness to stand and fight for what she believes in, even against an entire empire. The scale of the song gives a sense of mystery, like that of a distant galaxy, showing that Leia is not afraid to venture into the unknown if it means going after what is significant to her. TL;DR John Williams wrote a song that perfectly sums up our princess. But you guys knew that already.
I grew up watching Star Wars. The series represents my childhood. Carrie Fisher will always be remembered as our princess and general. But when John Williams himself started conducting leia’s theme, I was fighting tears. May the force be with us all!
i remember watching this live during SWC, and laughed at how quickly john quieted the audience.... then the music started... and I wept like a baby as I whispered "It's Leia's theme" all these years later and I still cry during that piece. It's always been so beautiful but even more so now. Music really has the power to move people with such greatness, and John Williams is a master of his craft. To quote Sir Elton John, Carrie, his gift is his song, and this one's for you..... to all of us, you will always be royalty
I saw him live at the Hollywood Bowl where all I could afford were the nosebleed seats, and noticed that, too. As soon as his hands went up, everyone shut up instantly. He even lowered his hands and brought them up again just to play with that power. We loved it so much. It was like the ultimate respect for the Master. However, as soon as that first orchestra hit for "Luke's Theme" struck the air, the crowd erupted in cheers. Same with the Imperial March. It's an automatic response ingrained into the souls of all of us fans --whether we identify personally with the Light Side or the Dark Side, we love it all.
Carrie's daughter hit it out of the park with her speech right on the money such a great tribute. Were on the eve of the Solo release and on this eve of the new release she's still sorely missed RIP Carrie
I don't care how many times I've watched this, I still tear up at the start of each piece. One out of sadness and one out of pure joy. Let's face it, the Imperial March is just badass and could never bring a tear...lol Thank you Maestro Williams, thank you for everything.
though I did not pull my phone out I can defend those that did in saying if they were anyone like the people around me they were polite enough to make sure they weren't blocking anyone's view and because this was a very stationary portion, most just held their phone and then watched with their own eyes.
orange42 Most people who were there were crying and enjoying it while simultaneously holding their phone above their heads so they could watch it back over and over for years to come. I don't generally like seeing the glow of phones at concerts either, but for once in a lifetime events like this, I kind of understand.
I never thought I would ever see John Williams conduct live in my life. Never had a way to get to the Hollywood Bowl and see him. I’m so fortunate that I was able to be in the room when this happened.
Luckily I live on the East Coast and he plays there and the Hollywood Bowl exclusively every year so I got to see him perform a few years back. Bucket list moment! He basically did this performance along with E.T., Indiana Jones and a few others. It was amazing!
This video was right in the feelings. From Carrie's daughter to his honor John f-ing Williams showing up to the final second of this video. F-ing masterpiece. Well done.
This music... the life blood of three generations. Chilling, gripping, uplifting, brilliant...the heart of the story. Carries theme is truly perfect for her. Also, when Jedi Master John Williams is conducting, it SHALL be perfect, and everyone SHALL cry.
This takes me right back to Friday night, a 4 hour wait even after one full week had passed since opening night in 1977. Twin North / Twin South Hicksville, Long Island New York. Two of only a handful of 70mm screens on the entire island. 12 rows back from the front of the theater and the Star Destroyer hits the screen; we were all in awe!!! I so wish today's generation had a chance to see this movie the way all of these movies were intended to be seen. Thank you George Lucas, John Williams, and the entire cast and crew that made this possible.
George Lucas and John Williams are two of the greatest artists of all time. They were responsible for the best monents of many of our childhoods. This is the best tribute that Carrie Fisher couldve received from the Creator and his Musical Maestro.
The impact that this man has had and still has on our lives is immense, it's huge, you can play a piece to someone who doesn't know his name but they will know where they were when they first saw the movie, he is so iconic! This guy is so iconic in so many peoples childhoods growing up, he's up there with Attenborough, a true master of his craft who does it out of love and passion and the want to give and express and make you feel, the guy is a true Jedi master with his baton! He has been the soundtrack of my youth from star wars, superman, jaws, E.T, close encounters, indiana jones, to Jurassic park Schindler's list, harry potter, I can't say enough good things about the man, he is truly a legend and I for one thank him for blessing me with his talent! I tip my cap to you sir John williams yòu truly are a legend and a blessing
What a tribute. Her daughter was fantastic. Carrie must have been so proud of her. Amazing to see how the entire audience fell silent when John Williams did a simple hush gesture. Very emotional. R.I.P. Carrie Fisher. You were an inspiration and you brightened my childhood. May the force be with you always.
I can't imagine getting up to speak about ones mother less than a year after she passed away. As well as her grandmother. I wouldn't be able to do it in front of a small room full of people after my father passed. Billie did it with strength and poise. In a huge venue. Well done! I see your Mother in you . . .
John Williams was one of the main reasons I choose to play French Horn in the first place many years ago and as a new professional player about to start in an orchestra job, it’s my dream to play under Mr. Williams baton one day. His music is inspirational to many generations!!
I had the great fortune to be in that room on that day, and after all these years, I STILL never tire of watching this video... What I am about to type here will seem a little "redundant", but please "humor me", and allow me to describe this first-hand experience anyway for those who may not be aware of the FULL circumstances or context of this historic SW moment... My brother and I had one of the most joyous surprises of our lives when we went to Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida in April of 2017.. Let me set the scene.. After camping out OVERNIGHT, my brother and I were TWO of the lucky 3000 people to be able to get into the "Star Wars 40th Anniversary" panel, which was the following morning... We literally had to get online for this panel a good 18 HOURS before it EVEN STARTED just to insure that we would get in, as there was only a 3000 person capacity! Well, the panel was EPIC, and just when I thought that it couldn't get ANY better, what with getting to see George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Billy Dee Williams, and all of the other celebrities that were in attendance... Well, at the end of the panel, there was a very touching tribute to Carrie Fisher, who had sadly passed away about 4 months prior to this convention, led by George Lucas and Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd... AND THEN... WELL... THEN IT HAPPENED... At the VERY END of the tribute, as you see in this video, the backstage curtains parted, and onstage, behind the curtains... THERE WAS JOHN WILLIAMS, accompanied by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra! Well, let me tell you, the audience simply went ABSOLUTELY BALLISTIC at this UNBELIEVABLE surprise, screaming, clapping and cheering like utter MANIACS... We simply COULDN'T believe our eyes... NO ONE had a CLUE that he would be there!... The Maestro turned to us with a BIG smile, and without saying a SINGLE word, simply raised his finger to his lips, mimicking a polite "Shhh"... And you'd be amazed how INSTANTANEOUSLY SILENT that room got... and there were 3000 of us packed in there! As for me, I was literally TREMBLING at what I just KNEW was about to happen... Williams raised his baton, and suddenly the Orlando Philharmonic was playing Princess Leia's Theme... Believe me when I say that there wasn't a DRY EYE in the house, including those of my brother and myself (you could HEAR the joyous sobbing emanating throughout the room!). After a thunderous standing ovation, he then launched into the Star Wars Main Title... and we all went INSANE again! George Lucas then came back onto the stage and introduced John Williams as "The secret sauce of Star Wars" and "The greatest composer in the Universe", and Williams wrapped up the "surprise mini-concert" with the Imperial March from The Empire Strikes Back... As 1st generation STAR WARS mega-fans, who have been ones ever since we first saw the original film in 1977 when we were kids (I was just 10-years-old, and my brother was 7-years-old), this ENTIRE convention, and in particular this 40th Anniversary panel, was a VERY SPECIAL moment in time for us that we got to share TOGETHER, and we will ALWAYS cherish it and NEVER forget it... For those of you who haven't seen it, here is a link to the FULL 40th Anniversary panel that preceded this surprise John Williams tribute ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dTqmkkw22vs.html&pp=ygUaNDB0aCBhbm5pdmVyc2FyeSBzdGFyIHdhcnM%3D
If I could turn back time...I was in the audience for this. One of the highlights of my life. Was totally unexpected and the whole room was filled with so much emotion.
I was in my early 20s when the first "Star Wars" movie was released and went to see it cold, having no idea what to expect. When the scroll came up, backed John Williams' epic score , I was blown away. It just got more amazing from there, in large part because of the spectacular score behind the story, perhjaps the greatest symphonic score in movie history. I remember when the movie came to an end, not one member of the audience got up and left while the credits were playing because they all wanted to hear this wonderful music one last time. And when the last note played and the lights came up, to my utter amazement, the audience broke into a spontaneous roaring applause. That is the first time I had ever seen that (and not sure I have seen it since). Keep in mind there were no Star Wars fans then because this was the first movie and had only been out a few days. Almost no one had even heard of it. So the applause was a real tribute to what we all now regard as Hollywood legends. But Lucas and Williams were both largely unknowns at the time.
JJJEEEEEEEEEEZUZ i was crying like a little kid all the way through that. Im an emotional wreck now. Thankyou for this upload, And to all those well known names behind this event.
This is honestly the most heartwarming thing I have ever seen and brought tears to my eyes. Star wars has changed my life and always been a part of my life I remember being six sitting on the couch watching a new hope. Star wars will always be apart of my life and I couldn't be more grateful.
