In this video we visited the John Wilson fishery Thailand, Chumphon.
I am sure many of the British anglers will remember John Wilson from his TV show Go Fishing that aired in the 80s and 90s on channel 4. In his time presenting the show he traveled all over the UK and from time-to-time overseas fishing for all manner of fish. In 2009 John was appointed with an MBE for his services to fishing in the UK and was voted the “The greatest angler of all times” in 2004 in a pole held in the Angling times.
In 2013 John moved to Thailand with his wife Jo where they built there Thailand private residence and lake in Chumphon. John had the lake stocked with a wide variety of Thai species as well as imports from around the world. John and Jo named there new Thailand home Bung Sawan translated this would be “paradise lake.”
Sadly, John passed away in November of 2018 in his Thailand home at the age of 75. Jo, John’s wife decided to sell there Thailand home and move back to the UK to be closer to family and friends and this is when Richard purchased the property with the intention of opening the lake as one of Thailand’s premiere fishing venues. With the permission of Jo and Lisa (John’s wife and daughter) the new fishing venue would be called the John Wilson Fishery. A fitting tribute to john who devoted so much time in the property.
Since purchasing the property Richard has been working hard getting the venue ready for groups of anglers. The first thing that he needed to do was build some hard standing pegs as the original lake bank was grass. One thunderstorm and groups of people walking around the banks it would be a muddy mess. So, they built 4 concrete pegs with shelters so that the anglers can hide away from the weather when needed. All the pegs are equipped with mains power a fan and each peg is equipped with its own air pump with the pipes hidden under the ground. The air pipes exit at the front of the peg so that when handling the fish after a long fight the fish can be sure to get plenty of oxygen and aid in its recovery. Not only this the pegs are equipped with a Crain that folds away as to not get in the way when not in use. This Crain swings over the water allowing the fish to be safely weighed over the water. This is the first time I have seen this idea and I think it is a good addition. This ensures the true weight of the fish can be known. Other venues guess the weight of the fish and let’s be honest its in the venues best interest to exaggerate the weights. With this system a true weight can be recorded and recorded safely.
Richard has also been busy adding to the already impressive stock of fish that John Wilson originally stocked. Richard has added a Siamese carp of 104Lb, Mekong of 190Lb, wallago 125Lb, Julians 25Lb, alligator gar 53Lb, Tiger 10Lb, Rohu 8Lb as well as many more at smaller weights.
