This is me interviewing John Woodfield down in Cornwall about his model flying before we headed off to the slope for a session in very light conditions. If you haven't watched John's video's, here is the link. / surfhero1
John's videos are not relaxing, they are mesmerizing. Once upon a time I flew a big yellow bird a bit like the Leprechaun. It really brought that all back.
Steve! You and John Woodfield are each true ambassadors of the very BEST things about the hobby. Hospitality, relaxation, simplicity, goodwill -- imagine all THAT! ;-) Good medicine for us all.
Glad I stumbled on this by chance! Great interview Steve! John is a true treasure. His videos are very relaxing and make people happy. No slopes near me here in Fremont, Michigan. I enjoy carrying a GoPro aloft with an electric powered Gentle Lady on my RU-vid channel. Cheers guys! 👍😀
I really enjoy the videos and admire the builds. What I don't understand is how anyone can build so many planes in so short a time. This man seems to build an entire, ready to fly plane in less time than it takes me to cover one - and I've been building for 60 years!
On my bucket list is to fly over to England and fly with John. Living in Texas don't have any beautiful cliffs to fly off. Do have some nice thermals. Thanks for sharing your time with John. 👏
Nice work, I think you have really captured the essence of relaxed slope soaring! And - wow - it's really quite inspirational to see and (without the usual perfectly matched accompanying music) hear just how patient John is at the controls - perfect example of less input giving more output quality of flight! 😀
Lived up the coast Snt Merryn (Padstow ) for 20 years there are flying places like this all the way up to Bude most require a walk to get to the cliff path ,Great interview and flying .
Every view and subscriber earned! I live in Colorado and so have many other folks here actually knew guys like Frank Zaic, Sal Canizzo, classic guys Don Deloach, Brooklyn free fighters, Colorado slope guys. My current project is a vintage Thermic trooper early edition for small field high start and brick 2.ghz RC. You really grab the classic look with the high tech lightweight performance, yes I also like just floating over a hill or beach myself. Your videos ae like taking PROZAC
What a lovely find today. Quite the most brilliant interview ever, many thanks from Brisbane. Makes mention of a 144" BoT.... Oh my word, I can't wait for that video..
Thanks Steve for such an enjoyable video. Really appreciate all the behind the scenes stuff that needs to be done to make it. The Dynaflyte BOT flew rings around the Thermalist and it was a fantastic comparison. I have found that mine will fly in about 3-5 knots, provided that the size of the slope is big. The hat mic makes a huge difference in the sound quality on that final narration too.
I’ve used the hat mic a couple of times now but I’m also trying to make the talking head shots in sheltered locations, as you’ll see in next weeks video also. Thanks for the tip Allen 👍
Brilliant video and interview with John what an inspiration. I have resently moved to the south coast of Wales so I will be doing some of that. Now where's my Bird of Time plan. Many thanks. Glyn Jones
Thanks Glyn. Now you’re living in S Wales, (where we have some of the finest slope soaring in the UK), you should join us for some weekend flying. If you’re on Facebook, request to join the group, Slope Soaring in Wales. Also check out this link for flying sites. a470soaring.blogspot.com/p/flying-sites.html
Great video with John. Thank you! I am thinking of getting started with the Micro Bird of Time. I like the build process having done some rubber powered planes. I would like to investigate some of John's larger hand built gliders. Any recommendations?
lovely video and interview, subscribed, been following John for a few years now, hi from New Zealand, my Bird of Time (wooden 3.5 meter) has a wobbly elevator, been like that forever, doesn't seem to be a problem or effect its soaring capabilities, winter here, cold, 3 am cant sleep for dreaming about summer days like this :)
Hi Stephanie. Thanks for your comment & subscribing and welcome to my channel from sunny Wales. I feel your pain regarding the weather, the summer goes by very quickly and I will be dreaming about flying also. Vey mixed weather here, forecast for this weekend is rain, so I guess I'll be building.
@@A470RCSoaring hi again, yes mixed weather is what English summers are all about, I grew up on the Wirral and use to fly with the Clwyd valley guys in the 60s... I had two big brothers who wouldn't let me have a go so thats how it all started, mostly flat field bungee or electric gliding now in the Waikato, North Island of New Zealand, very flat and all working farmland, when I lived in Auckland I flew of the cliffs up there always over the sea and I still have the 100 inch wooden sailplane, she over 40 years old now, any way enjoy the rest of your summer, Im currently getting my models ready for spring thermals :)
With less polyhedral and more rudder, that thing would probably stay afloat if two mice farted at the same time. But I appreciate the "old-timer" 1940's free-flight design vs. the Bird of Time 1980's "speed".
Q-What is the airspeed velocity of a John Woodfield glider !???!?!???!? Q-African or European! A- I don't know that! Lucky bloke with the younger years
Mostly about his modelling, building & flying, what got him into it etc. Also his RU-vid channel. And there’s video of us flying together, which I think is interesting as well as fun/entertaining
@@A470RCSoaring Looking forward to it, I met John a few years ago when I bought a power aerobatic model from him ... he must have been clearing out all those nasty power models 😁😁
