Your paddle battle is by far the most interesting segment any reviewer has done recently. It’s nice to have two people do a quick review of a paddle. Gives us two different perspectives from two different play styles. Can’t wait to hear about the new Joola paddles

After getting hit 3x in the face, 2x in eye and 1x in mouth, I got the safety glasses and am so comfortable with them after over a month of wearing them...can't do much about mouth or rest of face but eyes are too precious to lose any sight, plus it hurts too...thanks guys for the insight on my question

Eddie and John, another request for the paddle battle. In the future, I think it would help with differentiation if you used half points as well. So instead of just giving everything a spin of 4, we could get 3.5's 4.5's etc. That would probably result in a more diverse score spread and help differentiate between paddles and their specific qualities.

@johnkew John, you might find this bit of info interesting from an Engage rep I was speaking with via email about the new pro1 line. It has “gel” injected edges which is like foam. Engage rep via email: The Pursuit Pro1 has a 1/2inch paddle core thickness. The Pursuit Pro1 6.0 has a 5/8th inch paddle cover thickness. The difference in playability is that the 6.0 will absorb more shock thus providing a little bit more touch on the ball, while the non 6.0 will give you enhanced maneuverability and power. We have a Vortex Barrier technology in which we have injected the outer edges of the paddle with a next-generation composite gel that redistributes the weight of the paddle for a larger sweet spot.

@@johnkewpickleball My guess to why it’s not TF is their new “improved core” a long with the gel injection to increase stability. I guess in a way non TF should/could last longer face wise. I’m not sold on these though. So many paddles dropping soon I think I will wait for others to come out and buy something new next month. I’m in the market but too many options coming out to make a decision now. Sold a Ruby for more than I bought it for so currently playing with a random $90 RCF gen 1.5 paddle I bought a while ago on Amazon.

The question about technique v.s. Paddle technology is really spot on. A player with good technique will always get more from their strokes than those who do not have good stroke mechanics. Good example is John Kew’s forehand which is very whippy (wrist motion) which will more often than not push the ball INTO the net v.s having a good forehand follow through that most tennis players have which will provide a very good topspin return.

@johnkewpickleball I’m with you on the tennis question. The level of conditioning is higher due to heavier implements, longer games and larger court. The level of skill and coordination is higher since the distance you hit the ball is farther so the errors in trajectory are more exaggerated.

Have you guys heard of any "customizable" paddle faces or products that could be used for that? I feel like permanent markers would probably not interfere with the facing material much, but might come off on the ball? Just a thought...

If a Head Rule were to go into effect, there are unique times and circumstances that I would gladly give up a point to tag someone. One the other hand, size wise, there's not much difference between a head shot and a crotch shot 😊

Paddles I found having the best SW to TW ratios: Electrum Pro Stealth, Gruvn 16V, 16R, and 13V, and the CRBN 2X. All 5 have SW under 110 and TW 6.72 or higher (used John's database) - so good for Gruvn. That Mach 2 Forza is a sleeper as well.

Can you give your take on using paddle erasers vs. spray cleaners on paddles to clean ball residue off? I've tried both but not sure if it effects the grit or which is better

Please try to include the Volair Mach 1 Forza too. I got it after really enjoying the Mach 2 Forza and found it to be a very different paddle. I'd be interested in what both of you think. My Mach 2 Forza ended up around 8.8 oz by the time I sorted out what felt like the optimal lead setup for me. Even at that weight it is very fast at the net for me. My Mach 1 Forza ended up at 9.1 oz to get it to play well for me.

I have been using the Vatic Pro Prism Flash and wanted to upgrade to the Vatic Pro Flash - to move from Gen 1 to Thermoformed. I found the transition very difficult before I learned that if I played a several games with the Prism Flash I could use the Vatic Pro Flash easily after being completely warmed up. If I did not warm up completely with the Prism first, my touch and control with the Thermoformed Flash was poor. When I do warm up thoroughly with the Prism, I have no problems moving onto the Thermoformed Flash and taking advantage of its greater pop and power. I don't know if my experience is unique and thought it might be helpful to others trying to make the transition. In my opinion, the Prism Flash is the perfect starter to intermediate paddle and you both should have given it 2 extra points for that.

Congrat's on hitting 10k subscribers. You've really jumped pretty quickly in the past couple months. One thing I know is I absolutely hate the look of the wide body paddles. That Electrum looked hideous. But just my opinion. Great work guys it's so cool seeing the comparisons. Looking forward to your Joola content.

Thanks, yeah - I can't believe I'm at 10K already! I used to feel the same about the standard and widebody look. But I'm with Anna Bright - the more I see them, the more I like them. One big caveat, though - I only like the look of standard or widebody paddles with a long handle. So yeah, the shorter handle on the Electrum Pro Stealth makes it look less appealing to me, too.

hi john Let's see if you can help me, I have a big problem with paddles. I currently have Ruby 6.0 to play singles, and it works great for me, it is the best paddle for singles for me, I find it super stable, and I notice that the ball goes where I want. On the other hand, to play doubles, I cannot move it on the net, it feels very heavy and I have little maneuverability. and then I use a 16mm perseus and I notice that I can move it better. Do you think there would be a paddle that can be adapted for both modalities for those things I'm looking for? The Perseus individually I notice that the balls do not go where I want, as it is more unstable. So I'm currently not sure what to do, do you recommend something? I'm also waiting to buy the new Perseus on April 16. but I don't know if the same thing will happen to me as with the old ones, being "gen3" I have very good opinions about them. What can you tell me about all the sermon I have given you? I'm sorry and thank you
@johnkewpickleball
@johnkewpickleball 3 месяца назад
I'm thinking either a hybrid shaped paddle with a lighter swing weight, or a shorter paddle with more maneuverability. Something like the Bread & Butter Loco, or the Volair M2F (or GRUVN-MUVN 16S).

Damn great review and discussion, but I am all confused now. Just came from Chris Olsen's video and he was describing these as minimally less or about the same in power to the old models and nothing comparable to newer gen power paddles (Gearbox). And then I watch you guys, and you are saying it hits like a truck, not sure if this was a quality control difference in the cores you each received or how you both generate power in your own games

I’m a bit confused as to how the Electrum paddle(s) could rank as your highest rated lightweight paddle, yet score so low in this format (especially compared to the Gruvn…albeit not the 13s). For someone new to pickleball, can you explain this? Did Electrum win out solely on its extremely light weight which overshadowed all its other shortcomings? These sort of rankings highlight the differences individual players will experience with various paddles. With all the objective measurements and professional attestations available for study online, there is still a very strong “individual results may vary” warning that should be heeded, it seems. If a player has enough racket or paddle experience from another sport to have a feel for how their equipment might make a difference in their game, is it generally better for a player to make their paddle choice based on enhancing their strengths or making up for deficiencies in pickleball? Is it easier to teach and learn control or pop/power? I wonder if a control oriented player might do well to select a paddle with more pop and power that they can learn to control, and a power player might be better off with a paddle with a bit more control so as to help keep their already powerful shots in play better. Have you done an episode discussing this topic? Thanks for your work on producing this content. I really enjoy it.
@johnkewpickleball
@johnkewpickleball 3 месяца назад
The difference is that the three models of Electrum Pro Stealths score high in the lightweight paddle category, but when you compare the Pro Stealth to other widebody paddles, it doesn't compare well.
