No one will ever replace Carson or the two of them together. Great team. Greatness.

Johnny Carson was about 55 years old at the time of this clip. At this point, Carson was already an institution and revered throughout the country and world. He had a gravitas that 55-year-old celebrities rarely do now. He seemed like an authority, someone to be trusted, a comforting presence. Other talk show hosts have become famous, rich and have their own fanbases and legacies, but no one touches Carson. Not only was he the template for all the rest, but he also effortlessly showed how to combine class, grace, humor and humility with peerless timing and touch.

I've read many comments on Johnny Carson and yours is the best commentary out of all of them. I was deeply touched when you mentioned that he was a comforting presence. He helped me get through a bad time in my life. So now, when I watch these clips, I laugh cause they're timelessly funny, but I also cry cause I miss him so much. He was a class act. Puts Fallon to shame in so many ways.

Johnny had a great voice and sang very well. There's one of him singing with Dolly Parton and it is impressive indeed. Johnny always puts a smile on my face. A timeless legend.

10:00 Eastern, 9:00 Central. Antenna TV. Immense fun watching Johnny's Monologue and guessing what Topics were hot in The News at the time.🤔😂📺B.W.

It depended on where the person who recorded these editions lived. Also some had outdoor antennas on their roof which brought in a stable signal, and others had an indoor portable antenna which was much weaker.

Sadly, Johnny's real last words were not funny. According to his younger brother Dick Carson, as Johnny was dying from emphysema he kept repeating "those damned cigarettes" over and over.

Ed stepped on Johnny's W.C. Fields impression. There are many stories of Johnny laughing live, but backstage telling Ed, "You're the set-up. The punch lines are mine." I wonder if this was one of those moments when Johnny filed it away for after the show.
@johnking5174
@johnking5174 Год назад
No, not by 1981. The first decade or so yes, but by 1981 Johnny knew how much he needed Ed, he didn't care if Ed got a big laugh now and then.
