From "The Johnny Cash Show," May 13, 1970. The second-season finale of his TV show, Johnny brings his mom on stage to accompany him on the first song he ever sang in public, as she did when he was 12 years old. "Powerful" doesn't begin to cover it. Words & Music: Josiah K Alwood (thanks Leon Estes)

How lovely to see her playing the piano. She always believed in him. She knew the hand of God was on him, that he would be successful and have a deep voice. A mother's intuition.

If this isn't special, pray tell me what is. One of many special memories I have with my mom is, dancing with her the day I was married. She's been gone six years, but she returns many nights in my dreams. Anybody who has issues with their mom needs to ment them ASAP, because when she is called home, that's the end of any chance to put things right.

Cash's mother shows extraordinary sensitivity on the piano, never even threatening to overload. A bass voice, which Johnny had, is the easiest voice for a modern piano to drown out. The great collaborative pianist Gerald Moore remarked that he had to be more careful with Alexander Kipnis, a bass, than with the soprano Elisabeth Schumann, even though Kipnis had a much bigger and much louder voice than Elisabeth Schumann.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm pretty sure these guys were so laid back and just good ol,' down home country folk. I mean take this song, for example. How many artists today or in the last few decades, whether it's rock, country, or whatever...would include Gospel music to the extent Mr. Cash or Elvis did. Elvis!! A very devout Christian.

I looked this video up after awaking from a dream this morning……in the dream, a young Johnny Cash was very slowly singing this old gospel song ‘Unclouded Day’. As he sang, rose petals were individually plucked from the most beautiful red roses I’d ever seen. As each rose petal was dropped, they represented a child or baby lost to child trafficking, pedophilia, and abortion. He sang, repeating the song, as the petals fell, until each child was accounted for. It was very emotional……the magnitude of ‘petals’. 🌹😭🌹 Most people only hear the first couple of verses of the song but in my dream Johnny sang them all…..all four verses……and kept repeating them until the petals stopped falling. That’s when I awoke. It was powerful yet sobering. Emotional. Yet hopeful that this travesty to children will end.

I have been a Johnny Cash fan for as long as I can remember. This song, and specifically this version with Johnny and his Mom playing the piano, means a lot to me, as many years ago, my Grandmother had shown me this video, at the time I didn’t know the meaning of all the words but grandma she knew I liked Johnny Cash so she wanted to show me the song. Now unfortunately she has severe Alzheimer’s, and doesn’t know who I am anymore. So I cherish this song, for it gives me comfort, one day, she will be able to remember once again, when she parts this world into Heaven. God bless to Johnny, his mom, and the person that shared this video on RU-vid all those years ago, my hope is that this video can remain on RU-vid forever, as in darkness, it has given me light, I appreciate this more than I express in the form of a comment! Thank you.

This is more than powerful. It is making me cry it is so beautiful and has personal meaning. I grew up listening to 'mountain' gospel songs. I grew up listening to mountain harmonies. When I was young I thought it was funny singing when we went back to visit Grandma and Grandpa. Now it is my favorite music. So many are gone, but the music remains. His mama is beautiful and this video is a treasure! I can't thank you enough for posting.

I wish we still had simple songs like this. Well I wish the sky would say blue, and people would have common knowledge. I wish this century would work instead of sitting on the couch smoking pot all day. I wish people would strive to better their selfs instead of letting their kids do whatever. RIP Johnny Cash. This decade may not understand the past but I won't forget it or you.

I ment Johnny Cash and his wife June back in the late 80's. I still have their cookbook Mother Maybelle's Cookbook signed by all the Carter sisters. I worked for the Palm Beach Post at the time and spoke with and interviewed many well known people, but Johnny and June Cash were just so kind and cared about others, unlike many who achieve fame and fortune.

This song makes me happy...but also...it's bittersweet. As a christian i've struggled for a long time with a lot of things...a lot of sins. But I try to not carry so much hate in my heart...and be good to all my fellow humankind. No matter creed, color, religion, sexual preference, or what side of the coin they are on...good and bad. God teaches us to forgive all. And ultimately it's up to Him. This song hearkens back to a more simple time. I just wish things were simple. One day...

My take is that Mom Cash generally leads the music, but deferring to him on this track, and checks to see if her playing is in sync with his singing- speed and tonality-wise like a proper accompanist. He is clearly complimentary and appreciative at the end toward his mom, bc as we know the incomparable Carter Family is behind the lights singing backup vocals and that must have been both stressful and exciting for the Cash duo.
