I'm with you, man. I think that one CD is fantastic. The Legend of Johnny Cash Volume 2 is a nice addition, but everything you really need is on Volume 1. I also love Johnny Cash a ton, and am a big fan of Willie, too. I'd have to round out my top 3 old school country artists with Waylon Jennings. I realize that it sounds like I'm just naming members of The Highwaymen...which means I also have to tip my hat to Kris Kristofferson for being an amazing songwriter that all three of those guys (JC, Willie, and Waylon) were fans of.

Cereal At Midnight I would also qualify early Elvis Presley as country.

The American Recordings are owned by Rick Rubin, not Columbia, so they couldn't have been included.

Hey! So Cash was only with Sun from roughly '55-'58, and there have been several releases of the material he created during that time. Some of them are out of print, but one that is currently still in print is a three-disc collection currently on Amazon that has an average of five stars among its customer ratings. It's called "Walking the Line" and here's a link directly to it: amzn.to/2BK18TV This is not technically *everything* he ever committed to tape while at Sun, but unless you're interested in alternate takes and unreleased stuff, this is the one I'd recommend. If you want to look into his classic work once he left Sun and signed with Columbia but want to avoid some of the filler stuff like his gospel albums, etc, I'd recommend picking up the compilation album "The Legend of Johnny Cash." It's very cheap ($5.99 as of this comment) and it has a lot of his great, classic stuff, even including the stuff he was doing with Rick Rubin in the '90s. Ring of Fire, Jackson, A Boy Named Sue, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Man in Black, all those great songs are on this single disc collection. The Legend of Johnny Cash - amzn.to/2C2CJo9 I even recommend that one over the double-disc "Essential Johnny Cash" because it just has more punch to it. The truth of the matter is that Cash recorded a lot of material during his long career, and not all of it is the best, even during those early years. But those are good places to start your Cash collection, and if you decide you want to keep going down the rabbit hole, this big, expensive box set is a good way to do that. It did help! I am looking for all the sun stuff though, like alternate version that appeared on sun albums and what not. There doesn’t seem to be a guide to tell you what alternates appeared on which sun album and what has repeats. I would like to hear the whole thing cause I like to hear everything (yeah, I’m one of those guys).

Yeah, I don't know if there's actually anything like that. Even the collections that are supposed to be "*everything* he did at Sun have people saying that they aren't actually everything. Maybe someone else will comment if they see this.

L7 Casanova I just ordered the original sun albums 1957-1964 Johnny on the Charley label. This is an earbook released in March 2017, containing all 7 albums Sam Phillips released between 1957-1964 plus one additional bonus disc with outtakes.

Yep, this has a bunch of albums making their CD debut. It's everything he released when signed to Columbia. His Mercury albums, which he recorded after his time at Columbia, arrive in a 7-disc box set on June 26th and we'll be talking about that one as soon as it arrives.

Looks like I will need to start saving up for this set, a bunch of albums I really enjoy never got a CD release so this is great news. I'm definitely staying tuned for the Mercury set review! I recently discovered the album Boom Chicka Boom and I think it is a solid return to form for him, still being pretty different yet enjoyable. What do you think of it? I also have to ask you because you seem to be a big Cash fan. What is your favorite album out of his 80's output? I'm really curious. Great review! I really enjoyed it.

I’m least familiar with his ‘80s output, so I’m really looking forward to discovering them! The only one of his albums I really know from his Mercury days is Mysteries of Life, right before his American period.

Maybe it's a subtle way for whoever designed the packaging to make a point that Johnny Cash should be listened to in mono and not stereo. If that's the case (and I'm mostly just joking), I agree with them!

True stereo, for sure. So many of these early sixties albums are so tedious because of the choices of separation. Vocals only in one speaker, certain instruments like bass or drums only in another. It's gets better as the sixties continue, though. This is an endless debate that people feel deeply about! I haven't done the sort of side-by-side comparison with Cash's early recordings in stereo vs mono like I have with The Beatles, so I'll reserve final judgment.

The albums in mono in this set were issued in both stereo and mono, the last was Carrying On in 1967. Starting with Cash at Folsom Prison all releases were only in stereo so maybe that's why the earlier ones were reissued in mono here since they were out of print longer and harder to find.. Some of them were already on CD in stereo sold separately. The way record companies reissue things the way they do is often strange. They could have just added both stereo and mono versions on each cd since they are brief albums in length.
