So my dad grandad n great grandad who was killed in a fall 1919 Grimethorpe..South Yorkshire...west riding then...Slack his name....Died next to his son..who lived..ned
My granddad got electrocuted, never got to meet him. That was the last of our family in the mines. I’m grateful for my heritage, but also grateful we got out.
I come from a family with a long history of being employed as pit coal miners. Our backs are broad and out shoulders muscular like we were bred for it. I am the first generation born that has not gone down the shaft to dig. And when I look around the poor side of town I live in you can still see our heritage everywhere. Young men who look just like me with backs for swinging a pickaxe and hauling sacks. The coal dust 50 years later is still here, its in the woods where the mines were and its one every old building like its ingrained into the facades. Its insane to think that I live atop graves of those involved in the multiple mining disasters that hit the area who were never recovered.
it's so very true even today with all the safety precausions we have men still die. my great grandpa and grand da' went down the mines. got blacklisted for trying to start a union in the mines in the 1920's.
that is murica for you. "in capitalism the value of things is decided by negotiation". that is until the working class start negotiating too. your granddads were failed heroes
Big respect to your great grandfather and grandfather! Tough strong men to work the mines and even more so to stand up, speak out and get a union sorted regardless of all the shit they no doubt had to endure because they stood up and fought for their fellow colleagues. What did being 'blacklisted' actually entail? I assume it means they couldn't get work in any mines in their area? Did it also mean other local businesses wouldn't employ them? I can imagine it could even have caused issues with banks maybe calling in loans or refusing them or calling in mortgage payments ect. Mine owners were so powerful I can believe they could literally stop any local business or banks ever doing business or employing someone that they disliked.
Can not think of a better rendition of this song. Cash 's voice was made for tunes like this ‼️My Pawpaw use to sing this song all the time! MyDaMnWoRd 😎🔫‼️😊🙀👍🏽
"... What force leads a man To a life filled with danger High on seas or a mile underground? It's when need is his master And poverty's no stranger And there's no other work to be found..." - Silly Wizard - Fisherman's Song . . . . . Will
Great...I just enjoyed the Tennessee Ernie Ford version, and I wouldn't be able to say what's the best...Different in style, but both awesome...R.I.P., John and Ernie...
Great video! Thank you so much for posting this! This is one of my favorite songs to cover! Such dangerous work indeed, don't know how them miner folks do it, my hat's off to them.
Work chosen for lack of other local work and/or the intellect or ambition to seek better. This is why strip mining became popular, among other reasons. Just facts, not dissing all their effort.
I always saw this song as a metaphor for living a life of sin, while also being in a much more literal sense, warning of the dangers of working in a mine.
I only thought of the song as a metaphor to be honest, since it describes how someone with greed is blind (both ways), not knowing and does not want to see...
Truth that's also what its about as Johnny accepted christ as lord by the time this video was put out.... and every lyric in here reminds you of hell ( dark as a dungeon) though also a song of redemption....

I have also heard it explained that chokedamp is any sort of non-breathable but non-flammable gas, while blackdamp specifically refers to a non-breathable mixture of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapour.
