Trent Reznor's reaction to this cover says it all. After hearing it, Trent said something along the lines of "this isn't my song anymore, it belongs to Cash. It turns out that I wrote it for him and didn't ever know it"

Trent's version hit me hard when it came out. Knowing about his drug use, that he wrote this song is a terrible feeling. I hated the Johnny Cash version at first. I thought he just capitalised on a deep song by Reznor, until he gave his statement about the cover.

@@jordanwolfson8378I think it depends, to me most instrumentals I think of that make me cry typically are led by a guitar. Guitar has such a wide range of emotions and I feel like an artist can communicate with their soul much better with a guitar.
@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078
Agreed. I can’t help but be in complete awe over just how powerful that is. But the power of that moment is rivaled by it’s simplicity. Its only *one* note. Sure, the power/pace builds to a crescendo by the very end. But its only ever one note. Thats the part that floors me the most. There’s such a lesson in that. Sometimes the tendency is to make things way too complicated. But this is such a poignant example that something immensely powerful doesn’t have to be.

Thank you. You were able to put into words what I knew to be true about the song but could never put my finger on it. Relentless!! That's it in a nutshell. The piano is almost like the steady heartbeat of the song and it builds, louder and louder, until it just stops(like life). This was also present in the NiN version but again, I couldn't quite put my finger on how to express it. I play this song on guitar and while the guitar sets the movement and emotion of the song the piano really drives it home.

Nobody has ever crammed more regret, anguish, and pain into three and a half minutes. Johnny Cash was a good person who battled personal demons and made some bad choices and the curse of being a good person is that you’re capable of regret.

The closing of the piano at the end had so much meaning. It almost almost felt like he was saying goodbye. I think losing June really took away his desire to be here anymore. To me the song felt like a reflection on his life, he built a legacy and in the end it didn't mean anything to him without the people he loved.

There's the pure self loathing "I WILL let you down, I will make you HURT" Like he realized all the things he'd done thoughtlessly over his life, and they were his greatest regrets, no missed opportunities or anything like that, but how he'd hurt the people around him. And his wife is standing above him with pure compassion in her eyes, knowing that she had been hurt by him, but that was just a part of him, maybe the worst parts, but still outweighed by the best. And the guilt between them both, him for hurting her, and her for not being able to convince him he was good enough...no wonder Reznor said it was Johnny's song.

when I first heard this song and was in college, I thought it was beautiful because it was about Cash and his last days. As the song gets older and I've heard it more times, rather than losing those emotions, it's actually ramped them up and is even more touching. Now that I have experienced some loss in life and have seen others do so as well, it touches a much broader aspect of humanity and legacy and mortality in general. It touches on things I intellectually knew before but now it just cuts deeper. What an amazing song.

This song is one of the Best Songs Johnny Cash has ever Sang. It is so beautiful and deep and you can feel his pain in his voice and the words he is saying. It really speaks to me and says to me that all that a person goes through is only temporary. But there is something greater waiting for us all on the other side of the rainbow.

This song was always a tear jerker. But since losing my dad last year all I can do is cry ugly when I watch it. Looking back and remembering him being so active and then, as the years went by, watching him get frustrated and depressed because he couldn't do all those things anymore was hard. Cherish the time you have with your parents. Do the things you know you will be wishing you had done with them before they're gone.

The most amazing thing I've ever heard from the writer of a song was when Trent Reznor said after hearing Johnny Cash's version of his song it wasn't really his song anymore. I can't think of a higher compliment.

How crazy is it that Cash covered a Nine Inch Nail song and have every word apply to his life? Our walks of life are more similar than we know. Solidarity my fellow humans.

Really is amazing how a song, sang by 2 different people can have 2 completely different meanings. When Trent Reznor sings it, it's obviously about his struggle with drug addiction. But when Johnny Cash sings it, it's the final moments of man. And I think why Johnny's resonates with us so much, is because of how human it is, and how we all know that one day everything we are will be gone, that we will all die. And even when your very famous and have all kinds of money, and lived the kind of action packed life he did, in the end it all disappears, and there's nothing you can do to stop it.

I'm 74 years old and this is PAINFUL. Beautiful but God damn it hurts. I doubt there is a person my age that doesn't feel the pain of our lives in this song. We all fuck up, we all have hurt and been hurt, we all have so many regrets, that's the universality of Johnny's cover. I know every younger person listening hears his pain but in another 30 or 40 years you will literally feel his pain when you listen to this (and it WILL be around in 30 or 40 years). I loved Trent's version 30 years ago but it is Johnny's now.

I cry every time I hear this song and watch the video. Cash's voice just puts so much more meaning and a rather relatable pain in the words. It brings out feelings of despair that I think most people have faced in their life at some point and gives a voice to such an abstract emotion. It's so dark yet so tremendously beautiful.

I love watching how "art' has a profound effect on different people. This is what art is meant to do. It's meant to make you examine yourself in relation to the artist that your are listening too/looking at/examining. This is why art is also important. It allows YOU, the viewer to be in someone else's shoes. IT helps you feel the empathy and sympathy of a fellow traveler in this world. For we are all fellow travelers .

Interesting so few people actually understand what this is about. Cash was a heroin and amphetamine addict his entire career who trashed his relationships and just caused havoc and pain to those who loved him. Look at his wife's face, pain and pity and resentment and love. No one referenced "the needle tears a hole, the old familiar sting" , I believe most were moved by the intensity and emotion without grasping the context and meaning. That's art.
