This was his final release.... When his daughter saw the video she said to him "it sounds like your saying goodbye" . He replied "I am"

Johnny Cash was a man who seemed to do things his own way. I think that when he heard this song, when he read the words, he felt compelled to make it his farewell sentiment. He was a great entertainer who gave the world some incredible music. A real legend whose life and music impacted millions and will continue to influence folks for decades to come. May he Rest In Peace.

His wife, she was in the video, died shortly after this was made. Johnny died four months later. Rest in peace to both. Great music over their careers.

Trent Reznor actually wrote this song. Says these days that it's no longer his, but belongs to Johnny Incredibly impactful performance and video.

Sad but almost soothing. A man reminiscing of his life and accepting the arrival of end to that life. Making amends. Inevitable moment that awaits all of us. So maybe that's why it's almost disturbing. After hearing it now I can't imagine anyone else singing that song.

Grew up in rural poverty and ended up inducted to the rock and roll, country and the gospel hall of fame and sold 90 million records. He wrote over 1500 songs.

My dad respected Johnny Cash so much. Not for who he had been, but for who he became. His life was hard. He made so many mistakes, but they made him an amazing human being.

I'm fairly certain that this was at least his last video. Such a beautiful tribute that he gave to himself. He was a gift to us. I hope you check out more of his catalog. I've never met anyone who dislikes Johnny Cash! ❤️✌️

What a great farewell song. RIP Jonny Cash🙏. This song was poignant in every way. The lyrics, his voice accompanied by the dramatically played instruments and also this video, which perfectly complements the overall arrangement. Very touching and thought provoking. With your empathetic reaction you have reflected perfectly all the impressions left by this song. HAP, thank you🙏☺️. Wonderful choice Debra🥰🙋🏻‍♀️.

I know exactly where I had been when the news broke of his passing. Sitting in the immigration office in Portland, OR.- When Elvis died I was on the German Autobahn going to Trier, the radio broke the news.- When John Lennon was shot I heard it on the car radio going to a friend's house to cut her hair.- When Freddie passed I stood in my living room in Fort Ord, CA ironing clothes with the TV on.... what a life and memories to look back on.💔

What a beautiful song sung by a beautiful soull JOHNNY CASH R.I.P. the way he said his goodbye, simple and serene while telling his own story of his life as he knew it!! Thank you Hap for this emotionally intense reaction to this iconic legend of a man 💜🎵 wonderful song choice, Debra 🥰 and yes the movie WALK THE LINE about JOHNNY CASH life is a must see!

He fought addiction to drugs and alcohol. I am sober 20 years. But this song does speak to me because when i was not. The lyrics " Try to kill it all away, but i remember everything. " It is so true.decades you remember every little shittty thing you did. You remember them the day after too. Which starts the cycle again. One of the the steps is apologizing to the ones you hurt if possible. One of the key steps to break the cycle.

"I wear this crown of thorns" (represents Christ. ) "Upon my Liars chair" .. Johnny had a difficult life. Drug use. All the records, fame, awards, just a pile of dirt in the end. I feel he has a lot of regret too. When he closes the piano at the end, for me thats his closure. The lyrics are very deep. Phenomenal writing by Reznor. You should watch th movie "Walk the Line" about his life. Thanks for the great reaction Hap, as always.

This wasn't his last song, but he did pass away about a year later. He recorded it in 2002 and died in September of 2003. The woman in the video was his wife, June Carter Cash, who passed away about 3 months after this song's release. The woman in the photo on the wall is his mom. This one is a kick to the gut, isn't it? It hits everyone on different levels, but it's damn sure a reminder that you can't take all your trophies with you and since everyone goes away in the end, you should appreciate the people you love while you have them. Maybe reprioritize a little ...

Johnny Cash, the man in black. My grandfather loved him. I learned a little about him from the movie "Walk the Line" and met him once at an airport, I didn't know who he was, too young, at that time. What a beautiful farewell song. Wonderful song choice, Debra 👌 Great reaction, Hap ✌️ ☮️ 🎶

I'm so very behind! As a not really country music fan but I do have to say that my respect has always gone out to Mr Cash. My parents were fans so I knew a lot of his story....I also took them to a concert of his in a small venue near my parents home. He always seemed like he would be a cool guy to sit down with a cup of something and just have a chat. The man had lived a life!

When you look back on his life... he was 'the Man'! Popular, handsome, so talented, a beautiful devoted wife who sang with him..but he fell into the 'stardom' of it all. He had a tribulte museum while alive that fell to ruins in his lifetime. He had regrets, demons of drug abuse.. At the end of the song, 'If I could start again....' you know he would want to live parts of his life with better decisions. He was at his time the King, the Man in Black. This song 'gets' me everytime. May he rest in peace, and may we realize, we are living our 'best day' everyday. We are not promised tomorrow.

You might want to check Home Free’s cover of Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”. Or, if you frequented clubs in the early 90’s, they did a mash up of 6 really popular dance hits, including one from Queen. “Butts Medley Remix”. Yes they did. OMG Becky! It’s meant as a parody, and the video is family friendly. If you know the original songs, it’s a good laugh.

Definitely the most powerful music video I have seen in my lifetime especially juxtaposing his whole life and career when he was more lively and vibrant (even if still troubled) with how frail he quickly became with his condition. It was producer Rick Rubin (who worked with the Beastie Boys etc...) who did the series of albums with Johnny and helped him find his voice again when country music radio abandoned him. Another video I recommend is Ain't No Grave (released after he died and crowdsourced in the making of it - a project where people all over the world each contributed their own animated frames that took place of the filmed images - pieced together it is mesmerizing). There is even a Ted Talk about the Johnny Cash project to make the video.

Oh my Gosh you're reaction will be epic....ok watching... It was one of his last. His daughter and singer Roseanne Cash said to him...It sounds like a goodbye...He said...It is....Excellent reaction. Thank you. He died in 2002. His wife died suddenly and he died 4 months after. He had alot of addictions and troubles but he may be the biggest country artist ever. Lots of people loved him.

I have to say, I actually do see this song as closure. He told everyone he hurt that he's sorry for hurting them. He says he would do it differently if he could, but he did the best he could being as broken as he was. I do feel he personally also links this, "doing better," to being a better follower of Christ's model. Or at least the video seemed to show this. But we all know he loved his religion so it fits.

good reaction... "hurt" by johnny cash is the reflection of his own life. he struggled throughout his life with addiction to drugs and alcohol. the picture of the older lady is his mother. the lady standing behind him was his wife june. the song is about looking for forgiveness from those he hurt and realizing that life is not about collecting possessions but relationships and not taking them for granted.... complex visions of his crumbling museum, his childhood home, cracked dusty awards mixed family images and the crucifixion of Christ show a simple man searching for salvation as he is nearing death. the piano even appeasr to represent a coffin and he supposedly never opened it again after the last take. its one of the most powerful videos ever done and can bring the most ruthless of men to tears. his wife died shortly after the video and he died 8 months later... even the museum burnt down to the ground a few years later during a renovation project... i watch it anytime i feel i am taking life for granted.

June was still alive in this video from February 2003. She died in May 2003. They hadn't planned to have her in the video, she came down to check on him. So much concern and love on her face for him. He only lived a few more months after she died.
