I remember when this came out. I watched and once it was over all I could say was: "He's not long for this world." I felt as though I was watching him sing his own eulogy. Then a little while later I heard that he was gone.
Some people just know. Especially the elderly who have lived a long life and just feel it coming. It's sad but also it is beautiful that he got to say goodbye himself.
He watched the video with his daughter she said "it sounds like goodbye",. He said "It is ". June died not long after this and he died 3 months after her. A true love story
I still love best the NIN original because it meant so much to me during a dark time in my life in the 90s and The Downward Spiral was such an important part in my life.
Sayre Rowan Trent absolutely understands your perspective. He was apprehensive about someone else singing something he wrote that was so personal to him and his experience. He relented bc, well, Johnny is The Man In Black. And then Trent saw the transcendent power of his words and changed his mind immediately. I hope you see that Trent’s unique experience spoke to you and your unique experience. Trent’s unique experience spoke to Cash, too. We’re all in this together, s’all I’m saying. Much love.
Johnny may not have wrote the song, but he covered it because he actually _felt_ the song. Every time I'm asked if I think there's a cover that's better than the original, this is the song that I point to.
Luk- Starlord this was one of the last songs he recorded. His wife was on the decline, he finished the project. She passed and he followed like 2 months later. Rip
@@luk-starlord7558 there were two more albums released in the American sessions after AMERICAN IV. American V: Ain't No Grave and American VI: a Hundred Highways. All three albums recorded during the same sessions
BTW, Johnny is in SIX different Halls of fame, The Rock and Roll, Rockabilly, Country Music, Songwriter's, Gospel Music, and Nashville Songwriter's Halls of Fame. Johnny wasn't just a one trick pony. Not flashy at all, not perfect, but a REAL man among men.
It always gets me when they show his wife, his true love, June Carter Cash standing on the stairs then beside him. When she passed away, he passed a couple months later. His family said he died of a broken heart, she was his whole life, his soulmate and he didn’t want to be here without her. Johnny Cash was an American legend. If you want another great song of his, check out “A Boy Named Sue” live from San Quentin prison, that’s another classic.
Dying of a broken heart isn't just a romantic notion. It's very real and known as Broken Heart Syndrome. The medical term is takotsubo cardiomyopathy. I've worked as a private caregiver for the elderly, also in a nursing home and a hospital. I've assisted my share of people with their final transition. Very often their spouses passed away within weeks
My grandgrandma also died of a broken heart. It was not romantic. It was sad to see her like this. She used to be a tough woman, fighting like a lion for her familiy, keeping the household properly and caring for her grandchildren and her grandgrandchildren like me. Her husband was the world for her. She gave all the love she had when my daddy didn't give me the love I needed so desperately. Then my grandgranddad died and she changed instantly. She didn't care about anything anymore, not about her family, not about herself. This happened in 1989 and I still miss her and my grandgranddad so much.
@@abracadabra3033 This actually wasnt really his last song. It was his last single. If you want to watch his last song he ever performed... you should watch his last evr live performance. This man was literally blind, had organ failure, and was actually dying during this performance.. Its here on RU-vid.. please check it out.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FqESx05OuCA.html
Rick Rubin gave Johnny his studio. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were frequent visitors to the point of participating in further music recordings. This wasn't the end of Johnny's music - as he stated that after June died the only thing he had left was his music. He played for months until he was hospitalized and died. There is music in the American Recordings owned by Rick Rubin we haven't heard yet. That said, Johnny will never die - his music is timeless.
Old Johnny Cash is and all ways be an influence I like to watching Walk the line telling the world what he put himself thought to show there is a way out. He owned up to his mistakes.
This song was written by Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails. It's the last track on the Downward Spiral album, which is a concept album, meaning the songs flow into one another as they tell a story. This particular album told the story of Trent's fall into severe depression. He was dealing with addiction issues and mental illness. The closing the cover on the piano keys in this video spoke loudly to me; the end of a career!
I took the closing of the piano lid (and the reason I think they they took the trouble to keep it in the video after the music had finished playing) to be symbolic of the closing of a coffin/casket lid on a loved one. The way his fingers lovingly lingered on the lid after it was closed, like saying goodbye to an old friend.
Johnny was a wild man early in his career drugging and drinking but committed his life to JESUS CHRIST and was able to touch alot of people with his music and witness. Love your reaction.
Thank you and usually people have to go thru things and then for those who are blessed with a gift like he was will eventually find their way and do great things , R.I.P. Johnny Cash
“Who don’t know that name?” You are 100% on the mark with that one, brother. It don’t matter what genre music you’re into, EVERYONE has heard of Johnny Cash. Great reaction video my friend. This song always pierces my soul. Great reaction video, great song, great artist.
Johnny Cash transcends being categorized. He is the truest example of “A Man of the People” his music talks to the hearts of every human. He has a song for everyone. Someone who doesn’t like Johnny Cash has no soul. Never trust a man who doesn’t like Johnny Cash. 🍻🇺🇸
No cap, I don’t care how many times I see this, the way his hand was shaking while pouring out the cup does something to me every time. This song was particularly written about drug addiction, but anybody who has made mistakes in their life, which is everybody, can relate. This was his goodbye to the world.
June Carter Cash passed away on May 15th 2003, and Johnny Cash followed her 4 months later on September 12th 2003, 7 months after this video was filmed
I've never done any drugs, but I've been deeply depressed for many years and yeah, the feeling this song can evoke is insane... "I WILL let you down, I WILL make you hurt". When you're in that dark place for a long time, it feels like no matter what you do, you will inevitably end up letting everyone down and just be a nuisance, so it's better to distance yourself from everyone.
Or like a lot of people from Broken homes...its hard to have a lasting meaningful relationship...when you have No example of what that looks like, and are so afraid to lose someone that you just can't ever put yourself in that position, and end up either Consciously or subconsciously Sabotaging the Relationship...
When i hear that song by Johnny Cash makes me feel regretful of things i have done and things i have not done in the past. This song is really deep and brings tears to my eyes.
I think when you listen to this it draws a deep memory from the past that you try to suppress because of the pain it carries and you feel like your back in that time , i think you got that feeling , great reaction to a great singer and complicated man
When a song and an artist can give you the revelation of the things in your own life and make you take notice of the way you effect others. That is a song and artist for the ages. Everyone should listen to these types of songs.
Bro, this song is sung with the emotion of someone who wants to make ammends for all his wrongs. It's the song of a dying man who wants to make things right. The original song was written by Trent Reznor, but after Johnny Cash did his version, Trent Reznor said "it's Johnny's song now"
7:44 everyone has done wrong at some point in their life and YES, this song when sung/covered by the late great Johnny Cash makes people who hear it REFLECT.. Trust me.. you're not alone in how you feel. I think deep down Johnny knew this would be one of his LAST performances... He poured his SOUL into this and it's evident. I originally heard this performed by NIN because well they created it... but Johnny OWNED this song! He brought about SO many layers to the lyrics and the tone. So you were rightfully moved by this.. that's what good music does... good music knows no race, creed or color. It is, what it is! If you cried behind those sunglasses it's ok to admit it.. your human like the rest of us and it's not a bad thing to express those emotions. Looking forward to the next reaction video from you... :) Peace!
This was one of the deepest and most sincere reactions I’ve seen to this song. As a lifelong fan of June and Johnny Cash, I appreciate you opening doors to others who might not have fully recognized the magnitude and meaning behind this cover. Peace, love and respect always!!
"I'll fly a star-ship across the Universe divide, And when I reach the other side. I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can. Perhaps I may become a highwayman again. Or I may simply be a single drop of rain. But I will remain. And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again...." - Johnny Cash - The Highwaymen."
Nobody can tell a story like Johnny Cash or Bob Seger! Definitely one of my favorite songs, hit you deep but sometimes you just want to get in that mood I listen to it often. RIP Johnny Cash
Thank you for listening to this and you got it! I grew up listening to all kinds of music, dad called tv the boob tube back in the 60’s and 70’s. I listened to blues, honky tonk, cajun, opera, country, rock n roll, and western. Always loved music always will it soothes the soul. When I listened to Johnny Cash sing this it touched my soul, he can’t take his “pile of dirt” with him and it takes some men a long time to figure that out. Then it hit me he was saying goodbye to it and us and that hurt. Loved him in Folsom Prison there is a show about that he actually went to the prison to sing for the prisoners, was a lot of emotion it was either Johnny or his father spent some time there. The Highway men are stars and they were fantastic. Johnny Cash, Wille Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and I think Johnny Paycheck until he went to prison. Johnny Paycheck was popular for Take This Job And Shove It he was a different kind of singer.
The first time I listened to this, it reopened the pain of losing my mother even though it's been 22 years since her death. She introduced me to Johnny Cash over 50 years ago. We played his music at her memorial. It tooks a few months before I could listen again.
“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, But is there because he's a victim of the times. I wear the black for those who never read” ---Johnny Cash
I know you’re a soulful person, so I knew this was going to touch you. You know Johnny had regrets for the hurt he had caused other throughout his life. It is certainly a cautionary song - in the end, everything material you build ends up being an “empire of dirt”. Focus on what’s important. Wow! What a song to go out on! I was never a huge country fan, but you gotta respect greatness. Like you said, find those “soul songs” that transcend all boundaries. Cheers!
"If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep *myself.* I would find a way." I just love the outdoor view. It's nothing but snow and ice here on 2/7/2022.
Amazing reaction bro. One of a few times the music video adds to the song. It’s heavy heavy. His wife was his everything and he lost his will to live when she left this earth. This song does feel like a goodbye from a man upon reflecting on his death bed has a lot of regret. Even with all the peaks he accomplished in music he realizes none of it mattered in the end and all he wants is to be back with his wife.
Trent Reznor if the Nine inch Nails write this. When he heard Johnny's rendition he was blown away. This song really fit the time of what was left of his life. Not long after the release his wife died, and Johnny within a few months. One of those songs that people feel, doesn't matter the genre. Another great review Brother !
I came to this reaction because I had never seen one done out in nature. The moment he started talking I was blown away by the fact that this guy is on another level. I look forward to seeing more videos.
The dichotomy of Trent Reznor writing these words as a young man having made a dumpster fire of his life versus Johnny Cash acknowledging the rough, the bad, the bountiful, rich and fullness of a life nearing its end with all of its love and regrets and weariness. They both have a place in the world.
A truly thoughtful, reflective, quietly passionate reaction to a piece of music that deserves it. This is *such* a powerful 'swan-song' from someone known for making music that touched *so many!* R.I.P. Johnny Cash! May your music continue to both entertain *and* inspire for generations upon generations! [Just so you know ... I am *very* picky about subscribing to RU-vid channels, but here goes ...]
The Man in Black is as much of a Legend as James Brown, Little Richard or Elvis. Men, ARTISTS that built the Foundations that the current Generation stands on. edit: Trent of Nine Inch Nails wrote the song to RAGE against Addiction, a wasted life & a senseless death. Johnny sang the same song as a anthem of a hard-lived life & a death filled with regrets & missed opportunities.
Johnny Cash was my Dad's idol. They were both tall guys with dark hair, and Dad even dressed in black a lot to imitate him. Johnny died in September of 2003, and my Dad died in December of that year. There's a lot of emotional baggage in this song for me. I really believe that Johnny Cash knew his time on earth was short, so he chose to go out with a bang. This song is that bang. Keep up the great work, man.
This one tears me up every time. Loved Johnny. Thanks for really listening, I knew from the first reaction video of yours that I watched that you were paying attention. 💜💚💛✌️
I am a fan of just about all genres of music,, but there has never been a song that f'd me up as bad as this one. I've heard it a million times and I get emotional every single time. Great reaction, brother.
A powerful video by a great man. His wife passed, then his broken heart stopped and he passed. This song IMO was his swan song, saying goodbye to everyone and everything he loved. May he and his wife Rest In Peace. Thank you for being so respectful to the Man In Black.
This was the end of his life what a remarkable life it was I highly recommend checking out some stuff from when he was younger anything from fulsome prison is fantastic this cover version breaks my heart
Haunting...beautiful ... This man is reflecting on his life..his regrets....such sorrow and pain....the words are so powerful...they cut you deep... This is Cash....in all his glory This is his goodbye. ...
Hello and great review Sir. Someone earlier has recommended Johnny Cash's song, "God's gonna cut you down". I recommend the official video. You will see many music and acting legends paying a well done tribute to Johnny Cash. I predict the message will be worthy of you dropping some bombs. :)
Major props to you my man, for actually listening to the song and then reacting to it rather than interrupting it every few minutes to hear yourself speaak.
Johnny knows real hurt deep inside. When he was a kid of about 12(?) his older brother whom he idolized was killed in an accident at the sawmill where he worked. Johnny didn't speak for a whole year after that. Imagine what the world would have been missing if he hadn't regained his voice. I tear up thinking about it. I love his music.
Either Way Chris Stapleton Charlie Rose live version. It's not on RU-vid reaction anywhere hardly. But the lyrics wow. Especially for mature people who have lived life. If you react to Chris Stapleton ALWAYS do the live video 😆 he is just better live. Pure talent.
There are very few artists can can cover an iconic song from another. Johnny is one of them. This was his last recording. The love of his life, June Carter Cash, died. Although Johnny was in I’ll health, when she died, that day he lost his will to live. They were truly, truly in love. When people say, oh they died of a broken heart, it can happen. They had a love that, at least for me, couldn’t possibly exist. I hope for all you others out there, it does. One comment said the piano closing was symbolic of the closing of his coffin. I guess how I took it was the same only written different. I took that as he closed that piano, he closed down his music forever and his life! Within 6 months a truly legendary singer and musician was laid to rest along side the love of his life. I’m a life long Rocker, BUT who didn’t love Johnny and everything he stood for. RIP Mr. Cash!!
Im from Humboldt Park Chicago and Afro puertorican and that song brings me to tears after that I became a johhny cash fan.The song is so Beautiful and true.
I adore your whole vibe.... 💛 He merely is talkin about the illusion, the regret, the fame, the material shit, the devil. In the end he said if he could start again, he would keep himself, and he would find a way... meaning. He wouldn't have succumb to the evils, and the escapes...
Thanks man for recognizing this song. NIN created it but Johnny Cash covered in so that the masses would listen to the core meaning. Focus on what is important. Not what you think is important but what IS important. Thank you Trent, thank you Johnny and thank you Abra for posting this.
This is a Cover Song from a 2000s Hard Metal Band. The Pain with the lyrics: "The needle tears a hole" is about shooting up Heroin. Which CASH Never Did, but the song writers/Band in the 2000s probably Did.
The song is by Trent Reznor, who writes as Nine Inch Nails. He writes, sings, and plays ever instrument on the albums, and hires musicians to tour and play with him live, so it really isn't a traditional band. A great talent in his own right.
Johnny cash was a legend of country music, the man never agreed or sang anything that went against what he thought was truthful. All love my boss, stay receptive to the world.💯
The man in black.... I love watching this reaction videos. Because they show me that beneath all the color, race and whatever. We all have things in common and we can see them as long as we are willing to listen to the feelings of love and pain that we all go through. Thank you for making me feel that I’m NOT alone.
You started with the best song of country, if it can even be truly called that. I am a fighter and still teach it today, but that easily pulled some tears out of my stubborn face.
The video was recorded in February of 2003. His daughter, on seeing a preview of the video, said to him it sounded like he was saying goodbye, he replied that he was. June Carter Cash, his 2nd wife, the woman sat on the stairs in the video; also a singer in her own right who toured with him and sang with him on several songs. She had come down to check on her husband that day as his health was declining. June Carter Cash passed away a few months after the video recording in May of 2003 and a bereaved Johnny Cash followed her a few months later in the September. The song is by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and is about his battle with addiction and depression. Cash also an addict and alcoholic for much of his early life spending time in Jail on half a dozen occasions for possession. The song encompasses the way both musicians life threads are woven together and entangled across the decades between them, so much so that Trent when he saw the video said it was like loosing his Girlfriend, as the song had become Johnny's. Johnny was a campaigner for prison reform and the rights of Native Americans and much of his material reflected his own passions and darker past. It was June that Cash attributed to rescuing him from his drug and Alcohol addiction a theme of the song. Carter is the person played by Reese Witherspoon alongside Joaquin Phoenix, in the biopic of them: Walk the line. Johnny Cash's star had declined in the 80s and the Museum to his life with the smashed Gold Disk on the Floor, used as one of the backdrops to the video, ended up being shuttered. In the 1990s Rick Rubin and American Recordings more of a Rap, Punk and Metal label sought Cash to record for their label, and offered Cash complete artistic freedom. With them his career revived and he brought out his most critically acclaimed albums, the America series, bringing Cash to a new younger audience; starring on The Simpsons and Headlining at Glastonbury in 1994. The 4th and penultimate album of the America series from which this is one of several Hit Singles: American IV: The Man Comes Around, You may recognise the Title Track too, was released in November of 2002, and he was still working on his final Album right up to the end and that was released posthumously.
