I agree in the sense that yes In this life on Earth we are judged by humanity. However to the contrary i personally cannot set aside "religion" as this song, along with Johnny Cash himself, are Christian oriented.

These songs talk about things that people don't think about and things that influence a person's life growing up and into abult-hood, how people can better themselves and chose not to be what they were in the past or to think about others who have it much worst off. It's not a deliberate political message or hey join my religion, it's a hey while you listen to this such such things are happening, and such such people are aggressive because they were given no other choice when growing up but to become that. A lot of his later songs are more christian oriented but his earliest songs were that of life in general, folk music in the simplest way to put it.

He came from a very Christian Background. The older brother of Johnny "JR" Cash Jack was studying to become a Christian preacher before he sadly died in a farming Accident. He'd often recite verses from Scripture to his younger brother Johnny in preparation for what he thought was his calling in life. Although Johnny did have substance abuse problems at a time in his career he never left his Christian roots. It wasn't his only genre but his main genre, He was a Gospel singer till the day he died. Old question but I thought I'd chime in - I guess originally when Johnny auditioned to a producer he sang exclusively gospel songs. Also, him and Elvis were in the studio one day and decided to have a impromptu jam session - most of the songs they sang were gospel as well.
