DJ 745 sat down for an exclusive, in-depth reasoning with Johnny Clarke at Big Yard, Orange Street, Downtown Kingston, Jamaica reasoning about the early years with Clancy Eccles, Rupie Edwards, 50 years since the release of None Shall Escape His Judgement, the adverse impact that pressing plants had on his career, his work with Bunny Striker Lee, King Tubbys and much more!
Johnny Clarke is one of Jamaica’s most outstanding vocal talents who grew up in the Kingston ghetto of Whitfield Town and attended Jamaica College. In 1971 he won a talent contest in Bull Bay and his prize was a meeting with the producer Clancy Eccles with whom he recorded his first song, “God Made the Sea and the Sun”, the following year. He was named Artist of the Year in Jamaica in both 1975 and 1976, and became one of the most popular singers on the island, mixing original songs with covers of popular reggae songs by other artists, and mixing roots and lovers-themed material.
With thanks to Mitchie Williams Oranje Streetz Musick!

“Every Knee Shall Bow,” “Play Fool fi Get Wise,” “Bad Days Are Coming” all favorites. One of Jamaica’s great, inimitable and distinctive voices.

Johnny didnt tell you about the controversy in regards to his cover version of Bob Marleys song Crazy balhead ( or waiting in vain .... one of the two ) . The story ( from a previous j Clarke interview many years ago ) stated that Bunny Lee put the word out that the cover version was better than the original.. The story continues that in some ways this affected Johhny's career as at the time it came over like his corner ( B Lee in particular ) was vying with Bob Marley. He was kept out from doing some major reggae shows in Jamaica. I noticed that he mentioned nought on this.. maybe he has passed all that now.. not on his mind .. or he doesnt want to offend anyone. But , either way he is a great Rastafari musical icon..

I wanted to thank Johnny Clark for his contribution to the performing arts of music, when I was younger I remember thinking he was the greatest in the world, he had done some of the best covers of hits, one of my favorite cut is "wide awake in a dream" a 12inch single that lingerie in your mind, he is a great artist that laid out a great legacy.

Earl Zero couldn't sing the song properly he kept on making mistakes, Johny Clarke sing the tune in one tek with no mistake and they mastered the tune cut a dub plate and give to Fatman sound in the UK.
