The important difference between so many other great technicians and john costa is that he used his enormous technique to access the emotional content of the music rather than to wow you with his wizardry.
Generally, I'm not too fond of "technicians" showing off by playing myriads of notes. But this one here really makes impressive, emotional music. And it seems, he has listened a lot to the likes of Debussy and Ravel.
