i discovered elliott smith a few years ago, and every time i’m miserable or struggling he’s always there for me, i’m glad that other people can see how amazing he is
I'm surprised anyone clapped though to be honest, elliott isn't exactly "mainstream", or well known even when he was alive . It was good to hear even those few clapping, but really cool to hear Johnny say that.
I love his description of needle in the hay. It's about drug addiction, everything that's dirty and scary and gross about it was captured in that song. I found elliott smith through that song, because my dad listened to it a bunch when I was a kid.
Acting to explore the human experiences of others fascinates me. Johnnys interpretation of that song to interpret that kind of character is fascinating.
Ngl, that song was one I would listen to on the bus on the way to school to feel calm. I was going through so much at home and music was a huge way to have an outlet, Elliott Smith was dark but calm. I always felt peace in his music. Son of Sam, that song makes me a little anxious. Overall, a chill vibe for me when it come to Elliott Smith all around.
Ugh... I think I've just realised how narcs and empaths are hand in hand but can't articulate it to myself fully. It's not just the actor, its the interviewer too. Interesting interview.
I wonder cause he might heard in royal tenenbaums movie when the one character cuts his wrist. I believe that song is playing,I do know for sure it's a elliott smith song.
he probably just associated the song with that scene in royal tenembaums. Needle in the hey isn't creepy. Honest is a good word. Elliott smith didn't make creepy music. He made beautiful music with a hint of sadness. but i never felt sad listening to his music. it always gave me joy.
I can see what he means, the whole song has a manic urgency to it and the story of it builds from a pitiful awkwardness through nervous energy to a kind of wounded animal viciousness with the final verse. which is why the song feels so honest and probably why it helped Johnny so much because it perfectly reflects the descent into a kind of madness that embodies that behavior
There’s something about the tempo that makes me feel kinda anxious, so I can see why Johnny would get threatening vibes from it. I think it’s supposed to provoke the feeling a junky would get when desperately waiting on a fix
it's a threat to yourself. "so i can be quiet whenever i want", i always saw as meaning wanting your mind to be quiet, for the pain and mental anguish that you feel to finally end, which can be interpreted as wanting to commit suicide. maybe i'm influenced by The Royal Tenenbaums but i see it more as a threat to yourself, not at others.
@@jsullivan2112 Now on the bus Nearly touching this dirty retreat Falling out 6th and Powell a dead sweat in my teeth Gonna walk walk walk Four more blocks plus one in my brain Down downstairs to the man He's gonna make it all okay I can't be myself I can't be myself And I don't want to talk I'm taking the cure so I can be quiet Whenever I want So leave me alone You ought to be proud that I'm getting good marks It's clearly about Elliott anxiously going to pick up heroin. Not a dialogue at all, he meant quiet like in his head when the withdrawals start. The man downstairs is his dealer and being proud about getting good marks from the needles. You can interpret the song as you want but this is what Elliott meant. Not sure how you got a dialogue out of that.
@@jsullivan2112 I have an English Degree, no need to be condescending because I don't agree with your interpretation. This song is clearly about being strung out and scoring. Do some research.
@@jsullivan2112 dialogue: conversation between two or more people as a feature of a book, play, or movie. Thought I'd leave that here for you. Stay in school kid.
As a musician, his work is very complicated when you try to analyze it. Constantly changing keys and chords that don't make music theory sense, but make sense to our ears.
gfmgma no one, and i hope they never make a biopic about elliott because someone’s always trying to twist some narrative about his character or his death. i’m sure elliott wouldn’t wasn’t that either.
lol bullshit. Elliot Smith would have loved Johnny Depp as he's a hero who stood up for male victims of DV, everywhere (like Elliot Smith himself). Poor Elliot never got the chance. RIP.
@@ardiberen you are missing the point of their comment. They are saying needle in the hay is one of his most popular songs, and so this conversation is sort of cliche or whatever.
You think so? He's talking pretty slowly and slurred. Cocaine generally makes you hyperactive and super talkative. Much more likely he's drunk or stoned or something.
@@kitpalmer1583 Yeah. There's nothing worse than people talking out of their ass about drugs. I find speculation of that sort pointless, but if anything I would say weed. Doesn't seem at all up.
Is it me, or does the interviewer seem more than a little self-important, dude no one's here to hear you speak, just ask Johnny Depp questions, and listen.
Yet, you listened. Yet, thousands show up for him every where he goes. Yet, he becomes best friends with Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Jeff Beck, Alice Cooper, Hunter S THOMPSON. You have no life but shitty old cars (your poor daughter is not the priority. filming coming out of a fast food place (fat ass) your daughter is with a bored mom and NOT the priority.) Do better. Be a better human. Be a better FATHER. Feels good to defame and hurt others doesn't it? Think twice or come back and let's go.
