Wow I love Johnny but you guys put too much emphasis on Johnny's role in the group. NE could has made it with out Johnny what made their sound change was the writing and production of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Ricky has a strong voice too and if his voice was utilized more within the group the sound would have been just as strong. It all started with Helplessy in love and Once in a lifetime groove those songs started the transition. The label had no idea how to market NE once they became older. When they got with Jam & Lewis is when the sound change other then co lead on Can you stand the rain his lead on Boys to men and adlibs the NE heartbreak album is still Ralph.

Hayah7 I totally disagree. Why is this comment necessary?The group was just as successful with Bobby. Johnny just added a more mature sound to the group. No one person is bigger or better than the group. What could have been said is when Johnny joined the group he helped NE improve their image. Having said that, Bobby was good to go solo. He was no longer contained in a box, and he was able to showcase his great talent away from the bubblegum routines. He became more successful than any member of the NE group including Johnny. No ones 1st, 2nd, or 3rd album reached the platinium success as Bobby's Don't Be Cruel album by a long shot. As far as vocals are concerned , you don't have to be the best vocalist to be successful. It takes a lot of showmanship and the right platform or image to sell records as an artist. IMO Bobby was a good singer. Some would say that he was an okay singer. But Bobby was an excellent dancer, he had great stage presence, he had dynamic swagger, he was cocky and confident, and his platform was the bad boy image that he brought to R&B. This was brillant. Johnny was a great vocalist most would say, but he had no platform outside of NE. He could dance okay, he had stage presence, but his image was that of a church guy that did not want to break a girls heart. Ralph was a great vocalist most would say, but he had no platform or image outside the group. He was an excellent dancer, he had stage presence, and swagger. His dedication to the group may have caused him the success of his career. Also like Johnny he is tied to the gentlemen image and persona. Ricky was a good singer, and some might say a great singer, but he lacked confidence and stage presence unless he was contained in a group. He was an excellent dancer. BBD had an image outside of NE which caused them to outshine and be more success than Johnny and Ralph. Johnny, Ralph, and Ricky could have been bigger solo artist if they had all the keys to success as Bobby did. Food for thought.

The bubblegum/pop sound NE had would have been dead as soon as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis came on the scene. If it isn't love, Crucial, Not my kind of girl, does not sound like bubblegum music and Johnny is barely on these tracks. When you think about it other than Can you stand the rain and Boys to men and some adlibs here and there what significance did Johnny bring to the group. The way people make it seem is that Johnny was NE lord and savior he took them from the brink of extinction and saved them from dust and ashes. Like I said before if Ricky would have been given the chance to sing more and showcase is vocals Johnny would not be needed at all. Where does Johnny fit in on the Home again and One love album even in the NE movie he is irrelevent.

Woody is definitely a Fineeeee, Gorgeous chocolate man and was suited for that role. He was a show stopper as Bobby and he worked that gap. My favorite cast member. ❤❤❤❤

kwilcox1126 Also they wanted to cast Keith as Ralph, but Algee worked out better as Ralph. Woody had a referral to be brought in for Bobby's role because he is a professional dancer. He nailed it during the interview. Elijah brought Luke in for the role of Johnny, but the promoter wanted him to audition for Bobby. Luke wanted to play the role of Johnny because he said that he could relate to him better.

Yvette Chisolm​ Same here Yvette I've been saying this for quite some time now a concert with just him . Have you ever checked out his (unplugged concert in Willow Grove) if not please do so . And another concert he did at the Dusable Museum amazing you don't get a chance to get that up personal closeness when he's touring with someone else. Don't get me wrong he's a monster touring with other people by himself he's a master peace a beast by himself a force to be reckoned with but as you said I would love to see him in concert alone with no one else!!!!
