I was sharing a hospital room at VGH with a man who suffered a stroke. He barley had any reaction to anything the day he came in. Studying psychology, I knew that music was a powerful way to heal and facilitate brain activity. I explained this to his wife and asked him what his favorite song was. She told me it was this one. Coming from Austria, Alaska was what he thought Canada was like so he used to listen to it before he came (He moved to BC). Half way through the song he was able to break out a smile as his wife took his hands and danced beside him to this song. I will never forget that day. I hope he is better now as I left before him. But reading some of these comments, I thought I would share the power of music.

Ying Tzu I believe it is also about one's age when it comes to these songs especially as old as they are because especially to the older generation who have love them so much and the lyrics of them because they tell a story and everyone past and present still loves a good story as well as a good singer and those of us who are older and grew up listening to those songs with their parents or grandparents can appreciate the younger generation who enjoy them as well. It's a part of our culture and Heritage that everyone I believe could and should pass on and it also reminds those of us who are older have a time when things were much simpler and happier in our lives. The memories not only that but it helps us to connect with the younger generation in a way that we've never been able to before or an away with this generation is unable to connect with the older generation so many other ways when mainstream media and social media tries to create a divided and divisions between family friends xcetera

RIP Johnny Horton and all the other great proper country music artists we've lost, your music will live on forever.

I was born in 1950, just 5 years after the end of WW II. The first Johnny Horton song I heard in the mid-late 50s was Sink the Bismark. I asked my dad , a WW II vet, about the Bismark and the war. He gave me my forst history lesson and began my life-long love affair with all things history. And yes, North to Alaska was one of my great favorites. BTW, my wife and I are leaving for an inside passage cruise tomorrow.

Many years ago we were camping in the mountains when we all came back to the nearest town to resupply. After an hour we had gathered all our groceries and my youngest son was AWOL. A quick look all over walmart revealed him.in the music department. He was listening to Johnny Horton " North to Alaska and Battle of New Orleans". He told me "Dad listen to this music its incredible ".. He was 13 years old. When I told him his grandfather, Roger Miller and Johnny Horton all had the same great grandmother he said, "Why have I never heard this before? ? ?"

I'm 32 and my mother played this music all the time when I was a child You know when you say I grew up in the wrong era well because of my mother I grew up in the early 1900s and as soon as I left home and found myself in San Francisco it wasn't just a couture shock it was time travel as well I left immediately and went back to the family farm

I'm 54 and this is one of my favorites. Johnny played his final show at the Skyline Club in Austin, TX on November 5, 1960. He was killed in a head on car crash shortly after the show. My grandparents lived right around the corner from the Skyline Club and my dad would talk about the crash almost every time we went to visit.

Sounds like somebody needs to get away from Alaska for awhile. I live in S.C. and had some buds that came from Alaska and stayed a couple seasons with us when we were kids. They loved it down here. They would go swimming when it was 50 degrees, we thought they were crazy. They told us they were in the witness protection plan and we believed them. Sometimes I still wonder.

I thought it was little different as kid but eventually learned to like his music because of the great stories they told and he had a great voice.
