I met Johnny Rabb, before, got him to sign my ride, and then had a very personal 5 person clinic with him. I can assure you ge is really a great, fun guy who just loves drums.
Johnny RaBB is a fantastic human being. He’s humble and he’s awesome! His freehand technique was created my he himself before anyone else was doing it. He sort of the Eddie Van Halen of drums; found a way to be musical in a way that no one else had before...with rhythms and rhythm control. @Johnny RaBB #JohnnyRaBB
@Mrbuffington actually for me i found that the ones without a rim allowed me to make a much smoother transition back to the snare. Also, it opens up the option of using it on instruments that dont have rims, like hi-hats or cowbells and things like that.
He makes it look super easy! I wanna be able to do it and now! Seriously, to be able to play some of those short four-stroke ruffs like he was doing and keep it under control must take lots and lots of practice! Can this old dog learn a new trick? We shall see.
Ian Paice of Deep Purple used to use it, but more as an adjunct to his already impressive technique And the likes of Buddy Rich, whilst it using this specific method, seemed to create the illusion of a one-handed roll in their solos But I think that Johnny Rabb was the first to codify it as a COMPLETE technique rather than a “fast as possible” effect Check out his D n’ B work as he uses it to create the Illusion of multiple drum parts/overdubbing on a regular kit!
I heard that unicorns shoot nuclear rainbows out of their ass. Johnny Rabb has been drumming since he was three years old and went to Berklee probably before Jared Falk ever picked up a pair of drumsticks.
Hi boys and galls! Does anybody have a clue about thing that Johnny do at 2;22min? Are those strokes right left separate,or they mingle on every last hit, either right or left hand? I mean RRRR LLLL or last R is together with first of L? Thanks so much!
@aeroplus I've been playing about 8 years and I could handle any genre but I'm certainly not specialized in them all. I can play metal very well but I can't double bass as fast or consistant as some of these guys (yet) and I can play jazz but I can't play left hand and left foot triplet patterns while keeping the swing time on the ride and accenting on the kick, but I will be able to do these things eventually! I usually just focus on accenting different pieces of whatever song I'm playing.
@DevinCarmichael You should check out his solos, he does just that. He's amazing and comes across like just the nicest guy. I would love to meet him, I bet he's such a lovely humble chap in the flesh. Go Johnny!
@aeroplus practice everything slow and make sure every tiny detail is perfect until you speed it up. Practice atleast half an hour a day and make sure you have goal when you practice. Don't just sit down and starting hitting things. It's good to do that sometimes but you don't get much out it technique wise. Check out people Gavin Harrison, Jojo Mayer, Benny Greb, etc and learn everything they have to teach. And stay confident.
Try to adjust the angle slightly so the you hit a soft rimshot on the down stroke. If you start hear a buzz stroke then it’s probably to much of an angle because the stick would be hitting the head before the rim. Hope this helps. The other alternative is to put a slice down a small clear rubber tube from the hardware store and fit the tube around the rim where you hit to quiet the rim sound.
now all i wanna see is someone doing this with both hands and precisely alternating between every hit with the left and the right hand, creating the fastest drumroll evaarrrrrr...
id love to be able to learn this stuff, to do it, yet ive never had drum lessons or own a drum. so that book with the notes in i wouldnt know how to read, might as well be in ancient egyptian. such a shame :/ ill have to practice the 'free lesson' part with a pencil on a metal table, only thing i can learn really.
is it just me or does he look like he's always stoned? either way, johnnys the man. im suprised he got this from kenwood though, kenwood is one of the last guys youll hear bringing this up around berklee. you diiggg?!??!?!!?!
