Johnny Ringo was an outlaw and gunfighter who became a notorious figure in the American West, thanks largely to his time in Tombstone, Arizona and his dealings with the Earps and Doc Holliday. Featured in numerous films and TV series, the mystery surrounding Ringo's death only added to his legend. He was found dead near Turkey Creek Canyon with a gunshot wound to the head. While the official cause of death was that he took his own life, some historians have disputed that.
In this video we travel to Southeastern Arizona, near the Chiricahua Mountains in Cochise County, to the place where Johnny Ringo died and still remains. Then we continue down Turkey Creek Road, into the Chiricahua Mountains and the Coronado National Forest where we discover wildlife, ruins, and what's at the end of the road.
For info on how to get to the grave, check out this video by Cactus Atlas: • JOHNNY RINGO'S GRAVE |...

I so appreciate your many videos of the American Southwest. I lived in Tucson for 27 years and I never knew about Johnny Ringo's gravesite or Turkey Creek Road. Going off-roading anywhere in that area revealed things that just amazed me. Raw, natural beauty and history that isn't for everyone but is incredible if you are of that mind.

Thank you for taking me on a tour of a place that is dear to my heart!😄 One of the places I have camped & hiked the most in the past 40+ years has been Sycamore CG and Turkey Creek Road. Yes, the cabin you checked out burned in the 2011 Horseshoe Two Fire. It was pretty nice prior to that. Glad you found the footbridge. There are summer cabins nearby, but I think this was the only one that burned. I have had two mountain lion encounters at that campground (30 years apart: 1986 & 2016). Both at night, and both with a mama cat out with her cubs. Super great memories! I don't know what it is, but those Juncos do the same thing with my side mirrors when I'm down there.🤣 I was skeptical about Ringo's death as a suicide for a long time, but now think that is what most likely happened. And yes, that scenic area next 3 miles sign cracks me up, but since it is in an area with some ranches before you get to the forest boundary, I figure it is a way to get folks to slow down. Thank you for another well researched episode! 👍

That's interesting that it missed the other cabins. We saw them, but didn't know if that might be where rangers were staying or what they were for. No cars at any of them. Seeing mountain lions is amazing. I had heard jaguars had been seen in the area. The closest I've ever got is seeing a bobcat run across the road.

Once even went to visit the grave site and it has been improved some. Besides Doc being in court in Colorado (documented), Wyatt was already in California. There were two men looking for Ringo at the time and maybe they found him. I regret not going on down the road and thank you for that trip. If ever I’m back there will follow your lead.

Both Mary Ann Ringo and her sister Augusta Younger mother was Frances Augusta Peters (born Simms) she had a brother named Benjamin A Simms who married Zerelda Elizabeth James (born Cole) who is the parents of Frank & Jesse James. In the movie Tombstone, Doc Holliday shot Johnny Ringo in the left temple, which is what you'd expect from a right-handed duelist, but since Ringo was shot in the right temple, he was either shot by a left-handed assailant or he used his right hand to send a little lead through his right temple. Some have speculated that Johnny Ringo was dehydrated something fierce while on a world class alcoholic binge. Dehydration, plus hot sun, and great thirst, could have made self termination a strong possibility.

Ah, the mysteries of the Old West. Did he kill himself or did someone do it for him? We'll never know. Do the deer think it's a scenic area? Nice to see the wild turkeys. My my, according to the posted signs, there's a lot of things to look out for. I vote for bears to be the most dangerous, although if I saw one, I'd break the fifteen mile per hour speed limit getting out of there and risk hitting a smuggler or two along the way. What did the rock house use for power for the refrigerator? Nice isolated area for a cabin. Comes with a creek? Woo-wee, that's a big plus featuring water for a Saturday night bath! Aren't trees like these unusual in desert climates? Look like some species of pine. Make nice shade. Very interesting, a nice break from the flat, tree less, hot, dry, terrain. Thanks for the take-a-long.

At 8:50, you had to stop and survey the old cabin "really quickly", NOT "real quick", or "really quick". Proper use of the adverb "quckly". Even better would be "very quickly", since the base word of "really" is "real", the opposite of imaginary. "Very" is actually what you mean when you say "really". Thus endeth the lesson. 😁

Thank you for this bro. Tombstone was definitely a great movie and Ringo was a perfect villain. You cleared up a lot of misconceptions I had about this era. Youre hats also rock.

I just rewatched the movie recently. It still holds up.

I guess Costner tried to do a more real version of the movie and compared to the fictional version of Tombstone, it was a dud.

I personally think Doc Holiday killed Johnny Ringo in 1882, the reason I think so is Doc had TB and he knew he was on borrowed time. Doc died in CO in 1887. Wyatt Earp had already moved back to CA in 1882.

I'm watching this before I get up lying in bed in the village of Therma, on the island of Ikaria (where Icarus supposedly came from) in the middle of the Aegean Sea, Greece. How alien Johnny Ringo's grave and Turkey Creek Road appear. How oddly familiar (it's just as hot). I'm old and wonder if I'll ever visit you as well? I'd like too. All the Best.

Many theories on who shot Johnny Ringo; okay, I'll add another...Big Foot. Scenic route next 3 miles doesn't actually mean the scenery will absolutely stop after 3 miles. The property owner is either very lucky or has an amazing personality what with so many arsonists, vandals, grafitti p**ks, litter bugs, thieves, etc; us foreigners included. 🙂🙂🙂

Ringo Starr's last stop? He's still around, isn't he? Ringo wasn't born in Indiana. Liverpool, England. Okay?

Cabin ruins: This structure seems more cheaply built than historically old. That metallic box is an electric space heater. I would guess it was built in the 1970’s…abandoned and later set on fire for fun (teens?)

You were wearing a black shirt on a 100 degree day? Yikes. Glad you were OK. This was wonderful entry. Thanks!

It's a difficult trip to get Ringo's grave. No direct route from Pearce, AZ. It was easier on horseback from Tombstone.

That's pretty cool. Those old cowboys certainly led very interesting, adventurous lives. I suppose getting shot would be normal in those days.... survival of the fittest.

Cool video, I visited that grave site while on a hunting trip in the mountains back in the mid 80's. It wasn't fenced off like that back then. I'm from Ohio and was stationed at Davis Monthan AFB at the time. Lots of good memories of Arizona.

I visited Johnny Ringo grave back in 2017 and the only fence was where you walk thru threw the gate by the road. It's a shame the owner had to put up a fence. Takes away from his grave

Tombstone was the only place I've ever been in my life that the hairs stood up on the back of my neck! I could 'feel' the history there. It was weird.

Funny I was just there a month ago on my way to Indiana. We didn't take any dirt roads but the drive was wonderful. We purposely stayed off the interstates. If Doc was in Colorado, he didn't just jump in his car and head over to Arizona to have it out with Ringo. By the way, where did the name Ringo come from?

If you haven't already you should visit Greiger Key in Florida. There's an abandoned place that I haven't been able to figure out. Maybe you can.

Billy Breckenridge was most likely the last person to see Johnny alive. He ran into him horseback, and Johnny was so drunk he was swaying in his saddle. He offered Billy a drink out of his bottle but it was too hot. There's no evidence that Billy was gay as depicted in the movie Tombstone. These were most likely rumors started by the pro-Earp faction.

The reason Johnny Ringo's boots were tied to his saddle was to prevent scorpions from crawling into them. Common practice when camping outside in AZ back then.

Welp, I understand how He could be so cold shooting a man after seeing his Dad die in that matter at the age of 14. I was at the age of 11 when I shot my first deer, it hardens a Man when it comes to death even in hunting. I can’t imagine how hard that must make a Man at only 14, going through all those natural changes that freak kids out today like it’s some big ordeal, to see your Fathers Head blown off😶 He was a Bad Person no doubt, but He Lived and picked a Beautiful spot to Die.

Unfortunately, video can't do justice to Southeastern Arizona. A few years back my father and I drove from the south of the Chiricahuas to the north on a mountain road. For almost twenty miles we never saw another person or car. With no cell service or GPS, one foot to the right off the road and only the wildlife would find you. One of the best days of my life.

Great vid. - thanks! I personally think Ringo shot himself because he was known to speak of or almost fantasize about doing exactly that to his friends on several occasions.

I have watched a few of your videos and I do like the style and what you present. I decided it was time to subscribe. Thank you, while a very hot state it is a jewel. I am a rockhound, there are many areas in Arizona for beautiful specimens. If you ever make your way to Montana I have a story you might like to do. Thank you Steve.
