Johnny Rivers is a unique figure in the history of rock music. On the most obvious level, he was a rock star of the 1960s and a true rarity as a white American singer/guitarist who made a name for himself as a straight-ahead rock & roller during the middle of that decade. Just as important behind the scenes, his recordings and their success led to the launching, directly and indirectly, of at least three record labels and a dozen other careers whose influence extended into the 1970s, 1980s, and beyond.
Rivers was very much a kindred spirit to figures like Buddy Holly and Ronnie Hawkins, with all of the verve and spirit of members of that first wave of rock & rollers. He had the misfortune of having been born a little too late to catch that wave, however, and took until the middle of the next decade to find his audience. Born John Henry Ramistella on November 7, 1942, in New York, his family moved to Baton Rouge, LA, in 1948, and it was there that his musical sensibilities were shaped. His father, who played the mandolin and guitar, introduced him to the guitar at an early age, and he proved a natural on the instrument.
Meanwhile, Ramistella also began absorbing the R&B sounds that were starting to turn up on the airwaves at the dawn of the 1950s. Additionally, he got to see performers like Fats Domino and Jimmy Reed in person, and by the time he entered his teens, he was immersed in rhythm & blues. He was also good enough to start playing guitar in local groups and at age 13, he formed his own band, the Spades, playing New Orleans-flavored R&B and rock & roll, especially Fats Domino, Larry Williams, and Little Richard. Ramistella made his recording debut leading the Spades in 1956 with the song "Hey Little Girl," issued on the Suede label.
In 1957, he went to New York and wangled a meeting with Alan Freed, who was then the most influential disc jockey in the country. This led to a change of name, at Freed's suggestion, to the less ethnic, more American-mythic Johnny Rivers (which may also have been influenced by the fact that Elvis Presley had portrayed a character named "Deke Rivers" in the movie Loving You that same year), and to a series of single releases under his new name. Johnny Rivers' official recording debut took place with an original song, "Baby Come Back," on George Goldner's Gone Records label in 1958, arranged by renowned songwriter Otis Blackwell. Neither this number -- which sounds a lot like Elvis Presley's version of Blackwell's "Don't Be Cruel" -- nor any of Rivers' other early singles, recorded for Guyden, Cub, Era, or Chancellor, was successful. He made his living largely performing with the Spades and cutting demos of songs for Hill & Range, primarily in Elvis Presley's style.
It was as a composer that Rivers experienced his first taste of success off of the stage, when a chance meeting with guitarist James Burton led to one of his songs, "I'll Make Believe," finding its way to Ricky Nelson and ending up on the album More Songs by Ricky. By 1961, he was 18 years old and a veteran performer with six years' professional performing under his belt and relatively little to show for it except the experience; even a lot of the established figures in the business who'd tried to give him various breaks over the years, including Alan Freed and George Goldner, had fallen on hard times by then. He moved to Los Angeles and began aiming for a career as a songwriter and producer.
Fate played its hand in 1963, however, when a friend who ran a restaurant in Los Angeles appealed to Rivers for help when his house band, a jazz group, suddenly quit. He reluctantly agreed to perform for a few nights in a stripped-down version of his rock & roll act, with just his electric guitar and a drummer, Eddie Rubin. That was when lightning struck -- it turned out that audiences at the restaurant liked the way he sang and played, and soon the crowds were growing and his performing stint turned into an open-ended engagement. Bassist Joe Osborn was hired to join the combo and fill out the sound and suddenly seeing Johnny Rivers was becoming the thing to do. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

If Johnny Rivers was a current artist that voice would have made him a mega star. It sucks that so many awesome artists will be largely forgotten when the generation that made them famous is gone.

These types of songs used to help me sleep relaxed on the carrier USS Constellation CV-64 on Westpacs 81-82 sleeping just under the flight deck on a 24/7 airport. My Walkman was a God send. imagine now with cell phones & better ear buds? "Poor Side of Town" was and is my favorite of Johnny. Music that we can understand, not like now days, too much cussing. Thank God for oldies. Tks for sharing. USN Ret⚓🚢🐳🐬🐙

My little brother and I saw Johnny Rivers at Knotts Berry farm a long time ago on stage there My brother just LOVED his music as I did too , we listened to him everyday , my bro was around 10 at the time, if memory serves me , his song (secret agent man ) was used in a TV show , anyway My bro ran down to the center of the stage and yelled up to Johnny (play secret agent man) to our surprise Johhny walked up to my brother , and said you know that song , Johhny turned to the band smiled and Secret agent man came on , my bro had a lot of health problems and has been in hospitals more times than we can count , to see him so happy watching his favorite singer was something we will never forget Johnny Rivers is one of the coolest nicest kindest people ever back then as well as now , Johnny Rivers music is still so great , it brought tears to my eyes just hearing him again

On this day in 1967 {March 19th} Johnny Rivers performed "Baby I Need Your Lovin'" on the CBS-TV Sunday-night musical variety program, 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... At the time the song was at #10 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, two weeks later it would peak at #3 {for 2 weeks} and it spent eleven weeks on the Top 100... Three years earlier in 1964 the Four Tops' original version peaked at #11, and in 1970 O.C. Smith covered it, his version peaked at #52... Between 1964 and 1978 Johnny Rivers had twenty-nine records on the Top 100 chart, nine made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Poor Side of Town", for one week on November 6th, 1966... His covered version of "Memphis" peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} in 1964, the two records that kept it out of the top spot were "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys and "Rag Doll" by the Four Seasons... Johnny Rivers, born John Henry Ramistella, will celebrated his 76th birthday this coming November 7th {2018}...

This is early 1967,watch the iconic silver plated night dress girls are wearing. I was in the process of knowing "my girl" ,just on that days. One year later,I saw her in yellow jeans, emerald cotton shoes ,and a flowered hairband . I was captivated for ever. She was super sexy and nice,a princess. With the original silver plated dress she looked like her mother. But on summer she was different ,very unreal different.

the way it was, "the sixties" with power mini skirts, no computers, no I phones, no I pads, technology was not present as is now. a phone call was a dime to dial out from a phone booth. 35 cents for a gallon of gas. you left keys in your car, hitch hikers were present and on and on. will never forget the 60's, music and all.

Omg. I never saw this, but i can sing the song on demand if anyone asks. My parents had this single and i guess its still around here somewhere. I loved it as a kid and it never left me. Was just listening to yazoo, which i loved too, early 80ies and all of a sudden it again dawned on me that it is over 35 years ago. I still feel when i hear it that we are going to change the world for the better. Guess we havent... This is even older, 50 years. Blink and my life is gone. few more days and ill be 57, same age my mom was when she died. If only i had known what i know now. I would have done a lot differently. Its so odd. I always thought Johnny was quite the rocker, a rebel. Maybe cause, if i remember well, his image (totally bw'd) on the singles cover looked rough. He looks sweet as pie now. Then i see these women dancers and i think, wow, i like the brunette on the right ;] Then i realize again this woman must now be 70 or smth, at least. Fek i so hate getting old. Whoever invented that should be, ah well, nvm. Happy xmas ppl. Wish you all the best in these crazy times. Still need that love. but yea.
