Johnny OR Daniel | Who Was Right?
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Johnny Lawrence is one of the main antagonists-turned-protagonists of The Karate Kid trilogy and Cobra Kai television series. He was the troubled rich kid of the Valley who started a feud with new kid Daniel LaRusso that lasted over thirty-years. His vicious training with martial arts made him a formidable opponent, as he was the top student at the Cobra Kai dojo. After losing the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, Johnny's life turned upside down and remained that way into his adulthood. He is the estranged father of Robby Keene. In an attempt to reclaim his life, Johnny reopens the Cobra Kai Dojo and becomes a sensei to an entirely new generation of students. Daniel LaRusso is the main protagonist of The Karate Kid trilogy and one of the main characters of Cobra Kai television series. Daniel was a bullied high school student whose life changed when he was mentored by a wise karate sensei, who taught him both valuable life lessons and self-defense. Daniel was able to use this training to protect himself and others, winning two consecutive championships and beating aggressive opponents that challenged him. Years later after his initial training, Daniel settled down in the valley where he met a woman named Amanda and later on they were married with the pair eventually welcoming two children Samantha and Anthony. As Daniel continued on with his life as a devoted husband and father, he and Amanda are the owners of an auto-dealership chain called LaRusso Auto Group. He also retired from karate and used martial arts as a gimmick to promote his business. When his high school rival Johnny Lawrence resurfaced and opened Cobra Kai Dojo, Daniel was inspired to teach Miyagi-Do Karate to a new generation of students. Their rivalry had higher stakes then before, and things escalated during a school brawl that involved Daniel's daughter, Johnny's star student and estranged son. The aftermath of the high school karate war found Johnny and Daniel as reluctant allies, and they were forced to join forces once again when John Kreese challenged their respective dojos in the All Valley Karate Tournament.

Johnny is more right than Daniel because he is willing to be more open minded and he encourages his students to be the same. Daniel on the other hand is a little stubborn, and is stuck in the Classical mess, thinking that the one style he learned is the right way. Daniel was wrong to split from Johnny and his style when Terry Silver came on the scene. He thinks that striking first is taboo in self-defense Karate. What is taboo, is starting fights, and bullying people to prove your toughness. Daniel is the Martin Luther King Jr. of the show and Johnny is the Malcolm X, "by any means necessary" of the show.

Could Chozen be the third leg of the tripod between them? He does understand the more center and calm of the art. But also embraces a much more aggressive style. This could be the thing to really bring both sides together. I don't think they will directly join together into one dojo. But I could see them learning from one another. Much like Daniel remembering about finding his own way this was important in season 4 to the karate. Season 5 embracing that will be even bigger outside of the dojo.

I like Johnny’s teachings as a sensei because they are exactly the kind of confidence booster people, especially kids, need in the world. It’s not just about unnecessary violence like Daniel thinks. It’s about having the mentality to aggressively pursue your passions. If you’re going to go in on something, then go ALL in instead of half-assing it. Being decisive is better than no decision. Just like Miyago-do’s teachings, the “strike first” mentality isn’t only something that applies to karate, it’s a way of life. Especially in today world, those are the kinds of mentors our kids need

That depends. Johnny's point of view is valid in the sense of helping kids take initiative and stand up for themselves. The problem is that he used the ideal and name of Cobra Kai to achieve this(he realizes how damaging this really is by the end of season 1 and is on the way of making reforms ever since. This is basically the foundation of his own dojo Eagle Fang). When Daniel notices this, he pretty much wages a war because, well... Daniel's experiences with Cobra Kai are...not nice at best(everything that happened between Daniel meeting Johnny for the first time and the 1984 All Valley tournament)and downright traumatizing at worst(everything that happened between Daniel meeting Terry Silver for the first time and the 1985 All Valley tournament). As we've seen throughout the show, Terry's(admittedly absurd)plan to mess up Daniel's psyche had actually worked very well. To really answer the question, both guys can learn from each other. At the moment, Johnny is ahead of Daniel in terms of learning how to adapt to an opposite perspective so maybe he's the one closer to being "right" than Daniel is.

Johnny, of course. He has a sense of restraint and mercy, but in the end, when you're being attacked on the street, all that nonsense about inner peace and meditation flies out the window. You need to be able to strike first, strike hard, show no mercy, because the other guy won't, and if you hesitate, you may lose your money, your dignity, or your life. Daniel's teachings are good for inner peace, but you can find that at a Church, a yoga gym, or just sitting around in the park and admiring the beauty of nature. You don't need to wash cars and paint fences to find inner peace. Nor do you need to do such chores just to learn defensive moves; just repeat them on your own and the muscle memory will set in.

As for who is the better teacher, I honestly don't know. They both have pluses and minuses. I think it depends on the kid. As far as a kid who has anger issues and is a bully, I think Daniel. But Johnny's methods are helpful for kids who are doormats and are too passive. They are both great teachers, in my opinion.

I see what you’re saying about the sensei part but I think it’s the opposite. I think Daniel is good at training those who are “weaker” through defense, since that is their natural extinct. That’s why I think he succeeded with Demetri and had even had Miguel become interested in his style. Johnny is was able to do the same for offense with Hawk and Tori who have more aggressive personalities when provoked. That’s just kind of how I see it.

Johnny is the best. He is the most balanced on the show besides maybe chozen. Miyagi-do: good. Cobra kai: bad. Notice how Johnny uses both?? The good in the bad, and the bad in the good. Yin-yang=balance. Not only is Johnny balanced but he is super close to miyagi in morals, maybe not so much in teachings. Daniel finally realized that when after Daniel said “QUIET” to Anthony. Amanda literally said “idk what kind of miyagi magic you pulled but it worked.” When in fact it wasn’t miyagi magic, it was Johnny magic. Not to mention the countless parallels to miyagi such as helping a kid learn karate to stand up for himself. Teaching that kid life skills and helping him become a man. But Johnny need Miguel as much as Miguel needed him. Just like miyagi and Daniel. 1 more point before bore you. In kk3 when Daniel went off on miyagi he said “without Daniel-San I am lost” or something along those lines. In season 4 when Miguel was spending way too much time with Daniel. Johnny was lost, just like miyagi was. Johnny is the best sensei besides miyagi but maybe by the end of the show Johnny will become the perfect sensei like you said.

@@geraldjames7719 okay... Miguel is the one who lies to his mother about doing karate in the first place. The first time Carmen and Johnny even talk to each other without Miguel was after the fight at the Halloween dance, where Johnny admits he let Miguel down, promises to be there for him (which mind you he does consistently after that) and begs for another chance. Then they have that one dinner scene where they barely even talk about karate, let alone Cobra Kai. Why would he go out of his way to announce all his problems from his past to someone he barely knows at this point? That is not lying. With Miguel, you already fall short with your point, because Miguel in no way is an authority figure to Johnny, so that point is moot. He leaves stuff out because his hate towards Daniel clouds his judgement. Now that is definetly shitty and wrong, but in no way is that different from what Daniel does. In contrast, Miguel still wants to date Sam and takes what Johnny tells him with a grain of salt, but Sam just blindly believes everything Daniel tells her and doesn't even know everything from Daniels past with Cobra Kai until in season 2. Even Amanda has'nt told everything from her past to Daniel, because nobody wants to broadcast their wrongdoings from their past. And then the commitee meating... did we even watch the same scene? Absolutely nothing Johnny says is a lie. He really didn't know anything about Silver, he admits that Kreeses methods were questionable, he wants to impact his students life and does so. Just because the almighty Daniel thinks its bullshit, doesn't make it so. There were problems at the tournament, but Johnny was acting out of grieve and anger, which again clouds his judgement. And as soon as he sees where he went wrong, he wanted to change. He wants to be better.

@@paularoysko7861 this seems like a lot of splitting hairs. On the issue with his mother. Allowing a kid and his grandmother to continuously deceive his mother for his own benefit is still a lie. And yes I am willing to concede that Miguel is not an authority figure ....not sure how that derails my point in any way but sure. Now for the committee meeting that actually bothers me the most. You remember that he implied what he was doing was creating a safe space where people don't bully you and you build confidence. the confidence part sure, for those who stayed. the others who couldn't handle being insulted quit which is the opposite of what he was claiming.
@paularoysko7861
@paularoysko7861 2 года назад
@@geraldjames7719 first of all, if your whole argument is that Johnny lies to authority figures and you bring up a point where he clearly doesn't, of course it means that that point is invalid. Never said that because of that one point, your whole thesis was wrong. Now. I fail to see how in any way its Johnnys responsibility to police what a teenager he is not related to and his adult grandma do in their own home. Johnny is not a part of that family, not yet at that point. I would agree with you if there would have been a scene where Carmen herself went to Johnny and asked "is my son lying to me?" and he would've said no. That would've been lying. And benefit? Miguel is not a paying student at that point. What has he got to lose? After the halloween ordeal, he almost quits too. Miguel wants to keep training and Johnny refuses, but than changes his mind and talks to Carmen, who already knows about the training. Carmen could've said no, but gives him another chance cause she sees how the training helped Miguel. The safe space thing. If the scene of Johnny bullying the new students had happened after the meeting, it would've been lying. But it occurs before. Miguel calls him out, Johnny once again sees where he went wrong and starts to change his ways. He is learning. It is not his fault that people quit before he could make amends.

Daniel has the right message but goes about it wrong. He is doing what Miyagi taught him but hes being stubborn while miyagi would prolly ignore something like that. People say "defense can only get you so far in a fight" yeah nobody actually thinks defense is just defense. Have you seen daniel fight he clearly attacks and defends like I just dont understand some peoples points. Karate isnt about starting fights, its about defending yourself in others when you need to fight. Sometimes the best defense is offense but that still falls in the defense category because its fighting to defend. The greatest victories are that which have no battle and thats what it means to be defense. Using karate as a last resort rather than going out of your way to fight. Miyagi is the best sensei and has the best messages but Daniel doesnt really treat it as miyagi would. its kinda weird in the movies weve always seen him to kinda like think miyagis karate was boring and he was very similar to what johnny is now. But now hes a real sticler for miyagi do but in the wrong ways, He wants to fight, to prove Miyagi Do is superier, to get more students. whereas miyagi would do his own thing with the few students he had and not try and get more because he knows the few that he does have are there because they want to learn his teachings and not to become a fighting master or whatever.

Neither of them were right, both are extremely stuck on their own ways and can’t see passed their own egos which affect everyone around them including their kids. Samantha is aggresive, Robby was a thug who tried to change his ways and Anthony is a spoiled brat that can’t do anything for himself. Miguel ignited the whole issue with Robby, if he hadn’t gone full Cobra Kai them he wouldn’t have fought Robby in the school fight and Robby wouldn’t have kicked him several stores down and he wouldn’t have been arrested and influenced by Kreese to join Cobra Kai. Also he should’ve known better than pretend that Johnny is his father, he isn’t, Robby is his son and Johnny made the mistake of treating him better than he did with Robby, he should’ve tried harder to talk with Robby instead of leaving him alone. Daniel should have left Robby alone instead of turning him against Johnny even more than before, he didn’t and he just made things worse for everyone Also Johnny should have smacked Hawk over the head when he started using Karate to hurt other people, but he looked passed that and he became a violent person that could’ve ended up like Dutch To me both Johnny and Daniel are wrong in every way

I think Daniel was right, if you go back to the original movie Alli was flirting with Daniel. Daniel had no idea who he was when he came down. He thought johnny was a bully. Then when she comes to Daniel at the cafeteria she tells Daniel that johnny used to be her bf. When Daniel heard this he even said the voice in his head was telling him he’s a real yoyo for talking to Alli. She then convinced him that they’ve been broken up for weeks now. Johnny just couldn’t help that Alli moved on and held that hate towards Daniel ever since. That’s why I believe Daniel was right and Johnny was wrong. In the Cobra Kai show Johnny wanted to reopen Cobra Kai in the Valley to start a dojo. Daniel was upset because after what John Kreese and Terry Silva did to him in Karate Kid 3. Johnny on the other hand wanted to open a dojo different to what Silva and Kreese. It was a total misunderstanding on both parts but because of their stubbornness and hate they really couldn’t come together and talk it out. So I’d say more towards Daniel both in totality it’s both of them in the wrong.

Both of them and none of them. There are key and important lessons within both styles of teaching. One to learn how to face fear and kick its ass, and the other is to learn how to be more passive than to just go out swinging all the time. It’s just the way they go about teaching these elements is wrong. They both take it to the extreme and are very protective of the way they teach, not to mention trying to demolish all of the teachings the other one has taught that the student has absorbed.

1:40 I think that Tylearn is over stating how good of a thing it was for Johnny to bring back Cobra Kai. When Miguel asked Johnny to teach him Karate, Johnny refused. After the conversation with Daniel, Johnny decides to reopen the dojo. It seems that the one good thing Johnny did was try to avoid Daniel. If Johnny had successfully avoided Daniel, Cobra Kai would never have been reopened and Miguel would have joined Topanga karate.

Daniel was an arrogant kid, but most kids are arrogant. Johnny was the one being a bully and attempting to assert dominance over the new kid; hell, you can't even really frame what he was doing after the hose scene as giving Daniel a taste of his own medicine. Because thus far Daniel has only been put on the defensive, he sprayed some water at the guy and they wanna go for attempted murder? Yea, no. However, Daniel was framed as being really irrational and petty in S1 of Cobra Kai; maybe he thought Kreese was in the mix? Maybe he just knew that Johnny's way of teaching was only going to create more bullies (which it did; he's directly responsible for Hawk breaking Robby's arm and Miguel fighting dirty and attacking it). This only reinforced Daniel's lack of regard for the way Cobra Kai teaches, because Karate is really about control; control over yourself, your emotions, your surroundings. The show attempts to artificially reinforce Johnny's way of fighting and teaching by nerfing most of the Miyagi Do students, and attempting to frame their use of Miyagi Do only as a flaw. In reality, the two strongest fights in the verse were practitioners of Okinawan Karate, and in the first season Robby was wiping the floor with everybody with nothing but Miyagi Do.

Very nice video and while the over all point of them both being wrong is correct I have to side with daniel overall. 1:57 daniel did ask johnny for his motivations in episode 3 when johnny was at the high school. He asked him "why do you want to bring cobra kai back after what your sensei did to you?" Johnny said "because I'm not kreese and the lessons worked" Daniel them said "strike first, no mercy real good lessons" he then said hes not going to him fill the kids heads up with that garbage. Your nuts" That is probably the dumbest response johnny could give. (Leaving aside the fact that he nearly drowned miguel in the same episode). Daniel knows that this is what johnny is teaching specifically because he went to the dojo and saw the writing on the wall. Daniel did try to understand and johnny gave him the dumbest answer possible "the lessons worked" the same lessons that led to daniel being bullied because of the strike first mentality. As for him claiming that he was trying to make an impact on kids lives. Its partly a lie he said they won't get picked on because they're losers but we know in episode 6 that this isnt true. He bullies kids and doubles down on them. Johnny also assaulted Daniel's employee. As for him keeping Robby at his house. Johnny after being an absentee dad likely has little to no custody rights but honestly john kreese was back and Daniel was right not to let Robby around johnny when kreese was there. Kreese is a horrible influence.

First of all in karate kid 1 Ali was Johnny's ex girlfriend. So she wasn't his girlfriend anymore so it wasn't right to attack Daniel for that. In plus you also forget that he also mess with him in the school by puting food in his chair and also he pushed him from the bicycle. The only thing Daniel's fault was dossing him in the horse he even done that because of what Johnny did to him earlier even though it was wrong. And in the cobra kai if you hadn't notciued when Johnny started cobra kai he taught the same way as he taught by Kresse to strike first, to strike hard and to show no mercy. He changed that philosophy after he saw Robby hurt.

I have seen comments saying how Johnny is open minded, but in my opinion, I don't see it. He has not taught anything different to what he knows and other than what he applied once against Silver, he has never used anyone elses techniques. Johnny teaching mercy is just common sense. There is a time and place to show mercy of course such as when someone cannot keep going. Daniel too is stubborn, but no more than Johnny as he just like Johnny has applied the lesson that he learnt. Johnny got a girl to kick guys in the sensitive area, told kids to jump from one building to another and there was hardly anything that counted as protection, speaks in a very unprofessional way most of the time that would turn off many people to actually going to study in a dojo. He also guilted Sam into jumping when it was common sense that none of them wanted to jump. Daniel being a hothead led him to doing things that were unnecessary when there were more diplomatic things that he could have done. Instead of getting the rent of Cobra Kai raised which affected the other businesses, he could have talked to Johnny. Daniel also used some poor marketing techniques that were clearly directed at Cobra Kai rather than just do normal ones. Daniel allowed the situation to be more important than his job and he could have lost his business and reputation. Daniel should not have dismissed Johnny's style at all, let alone to his face to his face, but Johnny also could have been far more professional in how he was teaching his students to leave a better impression. They both have done great things, but also stupid things and are far from perfect.

This is just my opinion, but I believe that LaRusso is the better sensei. Here are a few reasons why. Reason #1: Johnny mocks people appearances. When Eli and Demetri first join Cobra Kai, Johnny makes fun of Eli’s facial deformity and is abusive of Demetri. He does improve later on, in season 4, his sensei student relationship with Demetri is slightly better. There is still room for improvement, but he has improved as a sensei since season 1. Reason #2: Johnny let Kreese back into the dojo. Johnny knows that Kreese is not above abusing teenagers. Sure, he probably just wanted to help Kreese redeem himself, but there are ways to do that that don’t require him to let Kreese near the teenagers. When Johnny forced his students into a cement truck, I wish I could blame Kreese for that, but Johnny was still having his student leaps buildings even after he cut Kreese out of his life. Reason #3: Miguel, Hawk and Aisha made some bad choices because of Johnny. Miguel and Hawk fought dirty during the tournament and Aisha was involved in the school fight. The Mall fight and the destruction of Miyagi-Do can be balmed on Kreese for obvious reasons, but all the dumb choices the students made before Kreese even came back to the dojo, that is Johnny’s fault. All that said, Johnny did make some changes for the better, because seeing his son fall victim of the no mercy win at all costs mentality made him realise that every person who has ever fallen victim of Cobra Kai’s wrath is someone’s child. These mistakes are the main reason why Johnny Lawrence is a relatable flawed hero, becoming better and better with each passing season. There exist many Miyagi-Do students who made bad decisions (like Robby when he kicked Miguel over the railing and ended up in juvie) but did any Miyagi-Do students make the bad decisions that they did specifically because of Daniel’s teachings? I do not think so. Reason #4: One of Daniel’s students behaved like a model citizen and had an underdog prevails moment during the school fight. I am of course talking about Demetri. During the school fight, Demetri behaved like a model citizen. He avoided fighting whenever he could. He kicked Hawk into a trophy case only when it became completely necessary. When Hawk blamed Johnny for what happened to Miguel saying “Miguel is in the hospital because of you, he showed Robby mercy, because of you” Hawk was presenting a false dichotomy. The mistake that Miguel made wasn’t in showing Robby mercy, the mistake he made was offering Robby an amends right there. What Miguel should have done was turned around and run away like Demetri did.

Aisha attacked in the school fight because he was about to attack her so she did that for defenec so Aisha is not in a fault in the school fight. But I agree with the other thing you said. But remember one thing sometimes when you show mercy to your oppoenent or your enemy he might attack you so you need to be careful. Dabel also had a mistake. He is stubborn he always wanted to teach karate by miyagi's teaching method but he forgot that Miyagi told him one day he will do karate on his way. And I don't blame him for that because many people thing their way is the right and the only way in plus Johnny's method look dangerous but that doesn't mean his teaching methods are wrong.

Johnny can adapt his karate to the new generation of students better than Daniel, which is kinda ironic because of Johnny's personality. Johnny seems to be more willing to make changes such as showing mercy, but Daniel just tries to replicate what he learned from Mr. Miyagi, including the chores, which have been proven to be unnecessary due to the fact that Robby can teach Miyagi-Do without it.

Yes I agree but to be fair they had Karate experience. So they knew a style if Karate. So he doesn't need to teach them the chores.

The chores teach his students not only karate but work. Miyagi also could've taught him the defensive techniques without chores but with his chores he didn't only kern defensive techniques but also works.

Daniel Laruso in my opinion he’s one of my favorite characters.
