On the topic of the Coconut Gun, I feel it’s worth mentioning that the lead designer for DK64, George Andreas, recounted a story about its creation; Miyamoto was shocked at seeing prototype gameplay with the placeholder model for the gun - which was a realistic double-barreled shotgun - and quickly drafted the final design for it. If he didn’t visit Rare HQ, we could’ve had DK blasting people with a realistic shotgun. What a world we’ve missed!

This game played a huge role in my childhood. The orphanage I stayed in had a N64 with no memory card, but this game was the only game that maintained a save file and it was so fun!

I don't know if you knew, but the rainbow coin at 29:37 is actually one that was not publicly found for so long. It wasn't in any known guide and the 100% collectibles speedrun did not include it until someone found it a few years ago

45:15 this is the greatest thing known to man

Quick note about Dixie and Kiddy: The game initially only used DKC1 characters. This changed later on, adding abilities from later games or environments for example. By the time they considered adding Dixie and Kiddy, the game was almost completed and just created relatives. (Tiny Kong being Dixies sister and Chunky being Kiddy’s older brother)

That surprise ending is now officially one of my favorite moments from this channel. This is now the canon DK Rap and you cannot change my mind.

I haven't laughed so hard in so long. Around the 35 minute mark where you have the footage of Tiny getting the banana fairy and you hear the enemy approaching and immediately hitting you man that takes me back. Of all the playthroughs I've ever done that happens every single time.

The hype was insane for this game, the magazine screenshots promised the most stunning visuals ever seen on a console and it delivered on that front.

An interesting fact about the game having an expansion pack is that the game was originally planned to release without needing one, but Rare had a game-breaking glitch with the game that the pack somehow fixed, running low on time they had no choice but to incorporate the pack & even decided to bundle it with the game, indeed costing them a pretty penny.

You know what makes Tiny taking Dixie’s place hilarious? THEY ARE SISTERS.

My friend summed this game up the best: "Imagine an all you can eat buffet but you decided that you wanted to eat everything 5 times in a row". The bloat and excessive nibbling on everything this game has to offer will basically cause you to keel over in agony.

Another case of: watching John drink to fully complete Mario Sunshine when I was a kid to, watching him drink to fully complete DK64 now. Life really does come full circle in many ways lol

I was a young child when I played this game and speaking of glitches, I remember Chunky Kong glitched out and fell out of the cage and was just standing there on the ground. I got so excited that I freed him but couldn’t comprehend why he wasnt joining me and nothing seemed to change that. Either way, I figured out how to save him the next day and decades later, I still remember this. Lol

I think a big reason for all the collectibles was to promote their strategy guides. I remember having to use mine often to try and collect everything back when it first released

I have some memories with this one. When I was 5 in 2008, my dad had a save that was 101% complete. He never taught me to actually start the game, so when I went to select a file to play, I actually deleted his save. I’ve played it on and off for years but I don’t think I’ll ever reach that percentage.

This video has a lot of creative passion poured into it like the whole Donkey Kong series retrospective has been getting by Somecallmejohnny, and it warms my heart that he has a banger of an ending with the fitting DK Rap. Well done

The DK rap at the end made me laugh so hard that it even made me even forget the symptoms of covid for a couple minutes.

Here's some info from the DK 64 manual about the three new kongs. Chunky is kiddie's older brother, Tiny is Dixie's younger sister, and Lanky is unknown in both origin and relationship to the other kongs. BTW, Cranky narrates the manuals for all three DKC games and DK64. He even mentioned that the DK in this game is a fully grown DK Junior, as opposed to his grandson from the country trilogy. This means that all three Donkey Kongs have been seen in two parts of their lives.

Ah, yes, Donkey Kong 64, the original completionist's nightmare, and might be the reason why we haven't seen another 3D Donkey Kong outing since then. However, with 3D Platformers making quite the resurgence over the last few years, it might be time for the DK Crew to get back into action...just without having to collect so much stuff, hopefully.

Imagine doing a 100% run as a child, spending weeks hunting down everything, and then finding out your game glitches during the last boss fight and can’t be completed. I’ve still never finished the game.

this game had a beast of a strategy guide back in the day and it was such a big game that the strategy guide didnt even take any of the fun away...hell...id say it added to the fun really. me and my sister 101 percented it thanks to the guide lol

If someone every makes a game like this again, I hope they learn about the Tag Barrel and makes that thing portable for switching. Btw, this game STILL holds the Guiness World Record for most collectibles in a video game. Just tells you how loaded it is.

The timing on this coming out was perfect, since I'm currently recovering from an 8 hour session of playing Frontiers. From playing a collectathon to watching Johnny suffer through the mother of all collectathons, this should be fun

I always forget that this is what Tiny Kong used to look like. When Diddy Kong Racing came out for the DS, they needed a character to replace Banjo but be around the same size, so they aged up Tiny Kong an now she's like a full pop girl with tube top and everything.

Lanky Kong's portion of the parody is when I had to pause the video and laugh for a solid 4 minutes.

I love this game dearly. It is held together with copious amounts of duct tape, takes 7 levels to finally figure out how to structure itself, and used to literally be a porcupine simulator on older emulation. DK64 is a game I hold near and dear to my heart for being a huge part of my childhood, but it has an unbelievable number of problems, and despite how comprehensive your playthrough was, you only scratched the surface on that front. If you ever want to find out just how broken this game is, speedrunning will show you pretty well.

This is one of those games with the best love/hate relationship, I picked this game up from a friend of mine back in middle school, and it's one of my favorites of all time. It would be great to get a remake of this game that cuts out all the needless backtracking and fixes up the aiming controls, plus letting us collect things without color coding the collectibles to specific Kongs. I wonder how they would change up the DK Rap though?

Always found it odd to me how people complain about how bad 100%ing a game is when you don't ever have to do that. You don't need anywhere near all of the collectibles to finish the game. The game wasn't designed to be completed 100%, it was designed so you could do what YOU wanted and complete it YOUR way.

Interesting fact: that Dr. Claw thing is actually a James Bond reference as it's what the main villain Blofelt did

Honestly, if collectibles and switches could be picked up and used by any Kong and switching characters was more smooth, a la Majora’s Mask, this game would’ve been amazing. Just have you switch Kongs naturally in the level to get past obstacles, instead of forcing the player to slog back to a tag barrel arbitrarily.

That was the greatest ending I have ever seen. It should be a hit single!

This game will always hold a special place in my heart. While I dabbled with gaming before, this was the game that made me a gamer. The scene: late 1999. I was in the kids room with my younger siblings when our dad walks in with a Jungle Green N64 that came with a free copy of DK64 (still have that green n64 and it still works). While this isn’t my fave N64 game (probably not even top ten), I’ll always remember it as the game that got me into gaming!

When I first saw the game over screen, the way it zoomed in on K.Rool made me think that he straight up ate Donkey Kong or something. At the time, I had never seen much of or played the game and I just let my imagination go to town. It also didn't help that his mouth was wide open as he laughs maniacally

The ending song is legitimately ear comfort. The singing and lyrics are enjoyable as hell.

It's funny. DK64 was everything that I and my group of friends would have told you we wanted at the time in a collectaton. I remember us reading the descriptions given by Rare itself of how the game was going to play and being excited about things that would now horrify me. I remember looking on boards online about it and other people felt the same way. Keep that in mind if you wonder how this game even came to be the way it is.

Been waiting for Johnny to review this one for a LONG while, it's everything I could've asked for! I usually cringe when other people try to make some weird musical tidbit of their own with their own lyrics, but this one at the end of the review was just so funny I can't hate it xD
