8:23 People joke about this, but I feel the reason for this is that you can't really do much to show a character being hurt in cutscenes in first person. Blood covering the screen works in gameplay but Ethan isn't actually dying in these scenarios, just getting fucked up.

Honestly, Heisenberg ended up being my favorite character in the whole game, which surprised me greatly. A huge factor is just how... weird his voice is. His enunciation is all over the place, with just the goofiest delivery. I feel like his speech really embodied the hostile, bizarre "camp" that Village was going for. I didn't expect it when I booted up the game, but it grew on me rapidly.

One thing I love is how each of the four lords represent the different types of games within the Resident Evil franchise. Lady Dimitrescu is the most obvious. Her castle, bossfights and overly-complex puzzles invoke the classic era of 1, 2, 3 and 0. Donna Beneviento's focus on growing tension, surreal hallucinations and outright terror is similar to Resident Evil 7. Moreau is the hardest to pinpoint but I can see his boss fight, personality and arena fitting right at home in RE4. And finally, Heisenberg has some MAJOR RE5/RE6 energy thanks to the heavy emphasis on combat and his downright ludicrous bossfight!

Man, Village was exactly the game I needed when it came out last year. Loved the flow, loved the layout, it was the kind of game I wanted to pick up again almost as soon as I was done with it. Felt like a great evolution of the game that came beforehand

This is just me, but I think that RE7 and RE8 (the Ethan Winters Story) are good intros to the Resident Evil series. 7 is a perfect distillation of the survival horror Resident Evil is known for. While 8 is a good example of Resident Evil’s action oriented side.

That "succumbed to the second amendment" line cracked me up, and Heisenberg's voice actor always sounded like he was going for a slightly more unhinged Nicholas Cage with his line delivery IMO. Can't wait to see what the spinoffs are like sometime down the road.

This is your friendly reminder that literally every part of this franchise began because a woman who lost her child found some shrooms, saved an old man from freezing to death, and sent a failed clone of said child to some Louisiana hillbillies.

I love RE Village. It's my favorite of the series. I think that's mainly due to the story. Yeah, it's flawed, but I still have a good time. The gameplay's also really fun to me too. I know a lot of people take issue with Village for several reasons, but even though those issues are present, I love this game enough to not care about those issues. Every game on the planet has some issues, even your all-time favorites in a specific series or in general, but you love the game's highs so much and to you the flaws are so minor that you don't care.

My suggestion for a sequel would be Resident Evil QuIXote, which takes place in a windmill that is also the final boss.

I stopped halfway in the review to just say I love Heisenberg’s performance. True he sounds reserved in the ham, but I feel because he sounds reserved it makes him all the more hammy. Also he sounds like Nicolas Cage sometimes because of it which makes him all the more of a treat

I personally LOVE the retcon that Spencer met Miranda and the Village was his inspiration. IDK, I just like the idea that this random village in the mountains was the cause of all the RE worlds problems, out of pure chance that a woman stumbled on an underground mold.

Not being elitist just want to share some info: the classic monsters you reference being from the 50s isn't entirely wrong. Hammer (a UK studio) did do a reboot on many of the Universal monsters at that time. The Frankenstein you show in your clip is actually from 1931 and the 30s and 40s Universal movies are what we all know iconically for their respective monsters. These were inspired by books and short stories from England ranging all over the 1800s to even the early 1900s. A lot of the inspiration for that stuff goes back even further.

Resident Evil 8 is a game that hit me on some deep level. I truly believe this game is deeper and more nuanced than people give it credit for. It even manages to give Ethan Winters a powerful complexity, which given how he was in VII is a feat. God, I absolutely love this game.

I just hope one day we get back the puzzle difficulty settings that increase their complexity on harder difficulties

I genuinely love RE8. Absolutely one of my favorites in the whole series, beat it three times back to back. And Heisenberg! If he ever gets a live-action portrayal, Nick Cage NEEDS to be cast.

I know it would make little to no sense, but considering RE's nack for bringing up past characters, I WISH they will bring back Lady Dimitrescu and Heisenberg. I just LOVE the amount of energy and character they bring to the franchise, being these two larger than life powerful characters, instead of being generic mindless goons or people with guns and shades, separated only by their moral compasses.

14:14 Nah, there’s some distance between the two. RE4 took place in a remote area in Spain, which is Western Europe. The village of Mother Miranda is probably close to, if not within, Romania (given the currency, the Lei). The two locales do share similar aesthetics though.

I think what makes the Resident Evil series easier to marathon as opposed to other franchises is that, with some exceptions, the games are rather short and barely go over the 8-10 hour mark, so you don't feel too fatigued to try out another one after finishing one. Also, I'm pretty Neil Newbon has stated he was going for a Nicolas Cage impression when playing Heisenberg and I think he did a good job.

Honestly, I felt the same way when I heard the case system and merchant were back.

Considering the entire story of Resident evil is centered around a flower from Africa, mummies wouldn't be too far fetched for Resident evil...

No joke, I actually beat Resident Evil 8 late last night and I woke up this morning to find Johnny’s review haha! I knew I had to complete the game if I wanted to fully enjoy Johnny’s video.

Personally, I felt most of the locations were kinda mindless when it came to clearing and puzzle solving. For example, the castle section was basically a straight path through as the game constantly forced you into a single direction with puzzles that are solved in that same path (the worst offender being that mounted animal skull). Although I did enjoy these sections, I felt like they could have been much better. Oddly enough, Heisenberg's factory is the one portion of the game that actually delivered on the classic style RE gameplay to its fullest when you compare it to the likes of RE2 and RE7. The factory played like a maze with puzzles that required you to learn the layout. My only gripe with this section was that I wasn't a huge fan of the cyborg-factory aesthetic (but that's more my personal preference; I would have like this style of gameplay in the castle section). Idk, I feel like this made later playthroughs of the game seem kinda boring, since even though I already knew what I'm supposed to do, I wasn't allowed to deviate from the directed path.

I thought the game progressed really well and Ethan actually had some character to him this time around. The environments in game were amazing to go through and learning more about the 4 lords kept me more even more engaged in the story more than what I already was. The characters were awesome too and I think your looking at it too much from solely a survival horror aspect when the game is multi-faceted. I definitely thought it was more enjoyable than RE7, but i respect your opinion. I’m just surprised to hear that from you. I guess it’s because I didn’t grow up in that era of resident evil where so many people crave horror more than anything. I’ve always enjoyed it more when they break up the horror with some action and I thought the game did a great job at doing that.

I think RE7 and 8 should be viewed as one, just divided up into two parts. RE7 being the intro and transformation, and RE8 being more of a final calling type of thing. RE7 isn't as action packed (maybe?), but RE8 ramps it up. Viewed that way, it's an escalation. The opening of RE8 would then act as more of a break in some way before throwing you back into the action-intense madness.

Honestly I always felt more drawn to Village than 7. Resident Evil for me works best when it's mixing horror with over the top stuff. And 7 way went too far into just flat out horror for me while Village got the balance better

Village is good and I put more hours into it than 7 (probably just because it's a longer game) but for me the setting and vibe of 7 was great. My wife didn't want me to play 7 without her as she was super into it too (shes not a gamer) but 8 she watched for about an hour and checked out. I hope the next takes more from 7 as that to me was the perfect amount of scary and fun.

I don't agree with the totem pole, but I do agree with your conclusion that RE8 is basically just RE7 for RE4 fans. IMO RE7 is an amazing and genuinely terrifying horror experience. The pacing and atmosphere are fantastic and I found the story very engaging (I did not see the twist coming AT ALL). RE8 is not as scary or polished but the gameplay is undeniably better. Very happy to have two great RE games that satisfy both the survival horror and action horror subgenres.

Great video as always! Just one thing, though: the villagers in RE4 all speak (imperfect) Spanish (with a Spanish accent), so I doubt they'd be in Eastern Europe ;)

Did anyone else find it slightly immersion breaking that all the native characters in the village sound British or American, when it's supposed to be Eastern Europe? They all spoke English too. I think having that Hungarian/Romanian style accent would help sell the homage to classic vampire/werewolf horror that they were going for. Resident Evil 4 was set in Spain and the local goons actually sounded Spanish and spoke another language (though admittedly it was more Mexican than Spanish but whatever)

Gonna be honest, I think people thirsted way too hard over Lady Dimitrescu. And I'm speaking as an anime fan.

I can never make it through the ending of this game without bawling my eyes out. My daughter was just born about 6 months prior to this game's release and i felt the big dad energy Ethan had in it. The ending makes me cry every time 😢

It's cool you are finally using your PS5 again. It's true the active triggers on the ps5 controller takes some time to get used to. I got my full experience while playing Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The active triggers felt weird while using the weapons while firing them, but after about 3 hours of playing, the Triggers felt second natures, makes me even more exited for the next Ratchet & Clank game (whenever that comes out).

Oh, fuck yeah. I would kill for a Resident Evil game that takes place Egypt and has mummies and stuff That would be wild!

This is a fantastic game! I liked VII better honesty for the setting and atmosphere alone but this was still amazing. Unnecessary continuity is spot on. A lot of the plot could stand on it's own or further future instalments with the seemingly newer strains on the virus. A connection is fine, but not a forced one.

That the game implies a baby was split into pieces and put in jars doesn’t sit right with me, that just seems shocking for the sake of being shocking and over the line

Great review Johnny, I've always considered playing resident evil when I have the chance but never got to. Also, Heisenburg always sounded like Raoul Duke to me.

This was my first re game and I absolutely loved it, I played through the game 8 times and had a good time every time. I wanna go back and play through other games in the future

I think a major part of Village's sudden jump to more wacky and hammy villains was because in Japan, a lot of people had stated that RE7 was "too scary" so Capcom, taking that into literal consideration, made Village the way it is. It's not an awful thing, as 8 is good on its own, but it is indeed jarring jumping into 8 right after the horror fest that was 7.
