My number guitarist ever , my school principal came to me once when I was a kid and told me .... “oh man I’ve heard you love the blues ? Must check out this Bluesman from Texas named Johnny Winter, he’s albino got long white hair down to his hips and a rattlesnake cowboy hat and he plays mean slide guitar “ and my principal give me all those tapes , man it blew my mind out , we didn’t had internet back then , I didn’t see what he looked like until years gone by , when I saw this Albino dude with the cowboy hat I was actually impressed that Johnny Winter looked like nobody I’ve ever seen in my life , man he’s the most beautiful being I’ve seen and he’s uniqueness and his music is absolutely gold , best slide player ever , best guitarist ever and he was from Texas coolest state ever . R.I.P Johnny Winter there is not one day that I don’t think of you and all your legacy

Seems to be a bit of bad feeling bout Rick’s playing..with the tube crowd..compared with the other two guitarists..Johnny..played with after..Rick..left...terms of..tech/intensity...I don’t hear that on this recording at all.I’ve been listening to all 3..of..Johnny’s ..2nd guitarists. To my ears..Rick..is the most complementary of the 3...and the tastiest player in terms of a balance of..speed and feel.

+Mark Andrew Zwartynski (Markie Z) It's not Bobby Caldwell. The drummer was Randy Zehringer, Rick Derringer's brother. Thunderous, blazing, nakedly great blues rock. by two of the finest guitars players the music ever produced. The rest of the band was wicked, as well, especially Bobby Caldwell. He played like a big band drummer. Like Count Basie meets Muddy Waters, turned up to eleven. That was the band. Bad as hell....just plain bad.

Together with Skynyrd and the Alllmann the hottes guitar duo on this planet ever, Pure energy, not mainstream chart rock like Bon Jovi ore Foo Fighters. Rick Derringer on fire! - no synthetic Steve Vai / Morse shredding . This is no-nonsense straight to the heart rock, rythmandblues. Absolute amazing. I do only know Purple with Made in Japan, Skynyrd with one more from the road and Humble Pie with Rocking the Fillmore who can hold up to this mad energy from Derringer and Winter.

Actually, Rick Derringer wrote a good number of the songs on 4 or 5 of Johnny Winter's Albums, and Produced and played on them - as well as Producing and Playing on Edgar Winter's Albums and having his own solo career. Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo was written by Rick. He was also an in-demand Session Guitarist and also Produced and Wrote songs for a lot of other Musical Artists. By all metrics, Rick Derringer had a successful career in the Music Business. Being a 'Rock Star' has a very short self life.

@@brucefulper2433 How so? Would you have more respect if he had continued on the path of alcohol and drug addiction, as Johnny did, until he was a shell of his former self in the end? Or maybe you'd look up to him if he'd drank and drugged himself to death as Randy Jo did? Or blown his brains out like Richard Hughes? Or faded back into obscurity, playing cheap bar gigs for the rest of his life? He seems, pretty happy with his choice in life..

@@brucefulper2433 The all star band sounded pretty darn good in Vegas. The sad thing is that Rick is a poor businessman and still has to work in his mid 70's. Yikes!

No,YOU are wrong! All of this solo is Derringer. There are no traditional Johnny Winter licks to be found in this entire song. If Johnny played on this at all,he played some very subdued rhythm guitar, and not for very long. Listen to the guitar at around 7:09. Johnny NEVER played riffs like that. As much as I consider Johnny to be one of the greatest guitarists ever to grace this planet,he is predictable in his use of stock riffs and phrases that he has honed to a gnat's ass over decades of playing. None of those are present here. Also, listen to the guitar tone. It is clearly not a Firebird, and it is also not a Lazer, his two favorite weapons of choice. Johnny can be heard shouting, once or twice, during the song, but NOT singing. This is a trio, blasting it out as few trios have ever been able to.

@@markpr73 yep u 100 percent got it right.. it's all RD. He did all the rock and roll medley stuff. That's why Johnny put the band together with Derringer cause he was a bad ass rocker. And this period gave birth to yes yes Rock and Roll Hoocie coo. Obviously cant spell.. every shredder should be made to listen to this.

Yep, it’s fairly easy to distinguish who’s playing what if you’ve payed attention to their individual playing styles. Personally, I always preferred Floyd Radford as a co-guitarist for Johnny, even though Derringer was brilliant. Of course this is all subjective and I refrain from bashing others for THEIR preferences. What I don’t get is the people mistakenly crediting Johnny as being the main vocalist on this. Rick and Johnny sound nothing alike save for some use on Rick’s part of the gravel-throated technique that Johnny has elevated to an art form, but that’s pretty sporadic. Bottom line: a lot of people ( who have probably never even held an instrument or sung a note) seem to think they know all there is to know about any given band, singer, instrument or song they’ve ever seen or heard. They couldn’t be more wrong.

To all those not knowing that this is BOBBY CALDWELL on Drums needs to look when Randy Z had to leave the band in August of 1970, for REHAB! Bobby then went to a drumming try out for Johnny and Edgar also being there, in Orlando Fl. Bobby went in and jammed with the band, and got 2 offers. One with Johnny and then Edgar said if it doesn't work out, i'd like you to be my drummer. Bobby was with Johnny through March of 1971, then Johnny went into REHAB. That is when Bobby got with the Captain Beyond Band. In 1973 Bobby was called by Derringer to play drums of his All American Boy record. Then in 1974 he went with a band Armageddon Then back to Captain Beyond in 1977 for there last album Dawn Explosion
