Johnston Canyon is a popular hiking destination located within Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. It is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, accessible trails, and picturesque waterfalls.
Location: Johnston Canyon is situated approximately 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) west of the town of Banff, along the scenic Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A).
Hiking Trails: There are two main hiking trails in Johnston Canyon:
Lower Falls: The Lower Falls drop about 10 meters (33 feet) into a deep turquoise pool. This trail is relatively easy and well-maintained, suitable for most visitors. It takes you along catwalks and bridges that hug the canyon walls, offering close-up views of Johnston Creek and its lower waterfall.
Upper Falls: The Upper Falls cascade approximately 30 meters (100 feet) into a breathtaking gorge. The trail to Upper Falls continues from Lower Falls, providing a more challenging hike with some elevation gain. It rewards hikers with views of a taller waterfall and the opportunity to explore deeper into the canyon.
You can continue the hike from the top of Upper Falls for another 3km to the Ink Pots. The Ink Pots are several colorful, cold mineral springs that bubble to the surface in an open meadow.
