I use Wright's Silver polish these days. It's a paste that you can find at the grocery store. I used Hagerty's for years and it's good, too.

It really is! Brentwood, TN is an upscale area near Nashville. The estate sales there never disappoint. Have shopped a country music star's home.

Could have set up a whole house with these treasures. 😉

I very much agree. I don’t know what part of Michigan you live in, I’m in the middle of the mitten. I haven’t been out in a couple years due to illness. But around here it’s a lot of thrift shops which can be great. But I run into a lot that are not true antique/vintage. They have become more of the craft items to look old, painted antique furniture which I am not a fan of, & reproductions. If you travel north I would check google in & around the towns you will be traveling through. I have found a lot of places I did not know were there until I took a chance & looked up. For instance in Indian River. But I have noticed most shops I see are basically in the southern part of Michigan. I am on IG if you would like to compare notes on shops in Michigan. Same name. I would love to find new places.

How fun to shop from cars. Kind of like a yard sale I guess. We don't have car boot (trunk) sales in the U.S. It's mostly garage sales.

@@LadyMaryBeth it is. Needs a nice dry field and sturdy shoes. Plenty of refreshments on sale. I used to fill my boot with boxes of cakes and cookies and my friend did coffee and cold drinks. Then I could spend what I’d earned

Terianne, how wonderful to have lived as an ex-pat in Mexico City. So glad you had the Junior League experience. It's a lot of volunteer time and so rewarding. Missed the timeline to be a Sustainer, so not involved in voting or volunteering. Our JLH has a lovely ballroom and tea room which is a social hub. So blessed to be a patron member. My father lives in Franklin and he keeps me posted on estate sales. Brentwood and Belle Meade have some great sales. I went to Trace and Rhonda Adkins sale a couple of years ago. She had a ton of jewelry and GG Collection serveware. It's worth going the first day of the sale and then the last day for deals. In your area, they sometimes feature a bid box for items that don't sell even at the discounted price the last day.

@@LadyMaryBeth I live at the top of the ridge, about 10 minutes away from Ky. The pickings are slim here. I used to go toward Nashville a lot. Now I tend to go toward Bowling Green. I haven’t been very far in the last 14 months. I’m looking forward to at least some yard sales this year. I used to find good stuff at the Thrifts and GWs down that way, before GW went all Neiman Marcus 😂 Last time I drove South, it was to Loden’s Vision, because they are the best. Good luck hunting!

Wish I had gone Sunday, the last day of the sale at 75% off. The Waterford candleholders were very heavy and I hand-carried these and a few other items home. I started my career with Waterford Crystal and these were not in the assortment in the 90's. The company has gone through many changes and ownership over the years. Today, they are owned by Fiskars, a Finnish company and maker of scissors. Production was streamlined and some items were produced in Germany starting about 1994. It started with the Overture and Odessa collections and continued with the Lismore honey pot, cake stand, etc. Today, much is produced in Eastern Europe and it's not the same. The old heavy has such intricate cuts, too.

@@LadyMaryBeth Hello, Lady Mary Beth. Thank you very much for the information about Waterford. I did not know they are part of Fiskars now. I do remember when they started having some trouble and started operations outside of Ireland. Thankfully, all of my pieces are from the Irish factory. Ashley's carried every pattern of stemware they were making, and in addition to the usual vases and decanters, they had some of the bigger, intricate pieces. I remember a globe, and very ornate, footed bowls and such. I wasn't too fond of some of the newer pieces, such as Lismore Encore, as I prefer the faceted, thicker stems, but I also realize that there is a changing market for different tastes. I was mentioning to an Australian friend about the changes over the years, with the English china manufacturing, especially when so many of the factories closed in the late 50s, and again in recent times, with offshore production, etc., and that made me wonder about the Waterford situation. Thanks again for such an interesting bit of information.

Wish I had a basement, but we are close to sea level on the Texas Gulf Coast. I actually do have some dishes and party decor stored in the attic. Ha! Most dishes are in cabinets throughout the house. I also have a storage room with several heirloom patterns recently gifted to me. I dream of a huge walk-in dish room off a dining area. 💭

Great question. Perhaps 7 because there are that many continents, seven seas, and a rainbow has 7 colors. In Japan, bowls are sold in sets of 5. Perhaps these were made in a country where 8 is not the norm. I would look at it like a set of six with an extra in case of breakage. 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s rather sad to see this trend of disposable and no fuss tableware. I am all for easy care and convenience, but taste does not have to be disregarded. Buy what you can now., I predict a resurgence of beautiful table settings.
