This hike takes you through the Groppensteinschlucht, one of the most beautiful gorges in Carinthia. You can only go through this gorge in one direction. Please note that the gorge is closed in bad weather. The entrance fee for the gorge is € 7.00 per person.
The hike starts at the parking lot, which is located on a side road of Bundesstrasse 106 in Raufen, near Obervellach. From the parking lot you walk a short distance to the entrance of the gorge. On your left you will see the castle Groppenstein.
Past the ticket office, in the former toll house of Raufen, you first walk up through the forest. Once on this path it is clear how to walk: there are simply no turns or side paths. You soon pass a steel work of art, a head from which water spouts: 'die fünf Sinnen'.
After 10 minutes you pass the first waterfall, the Raufenfall with several vortices. Another 10 minutes further you reach the Groppensteinfall. You reach the third and last large waterfall half an hour later. At this Zechnerfall, a viewing platform has been built at the top of the waterfall. You have now climbed from 692 meters to 922 meters.
After the last waterfall you come to a flatter part and you walk a little further through the forest. At some point you will come to a large signpost where you can choose from a number of options to return to the parking lot.
The longest route (about an hour longer) is to turn right towards Gasthof Zur Guten Quelle, but this route is not described here.
Here we follow the indication 'Schlucht-Rundweg'. You will then reach an asphalt road a little further, which you follow downwards.
At some point you will arrive at Burg Croppenstein. This medieval castle cannot be visited and looks somewhat dilapidated. From this point you choose the hollow road (indicated with the sign 'Schlucht-Rundweg'). This path becomes rocky at some point and eventually takes you past an old, dilapidated church back to the starting point.
