I was welding up an industrial-style cupboard I am making which is made mainly from Angle Iron and thought I would do a quick video on how I cut some of the 90-degree joints for welding in this project.
I have been using this joint or doing the 45-degree cut for many years, BUT, I did not invent this joint, people have been using this joint for many years before we started using it.

You've just solved two problems for me - interdependent problems with the 45 degree mitre. Getting both square and dimensions right can be tricky. I sometimes gain and lose 1mm or 2mm in dimensions, by ensuring that the item is square. If I gain on the length, I lose on the width, and vice versa. This method guarantees dimensions and makes keeping square much easier! I can't wait to try it. Thanks so much mate!!

Wow! What a coincidence? I have also independently conceived this idea sometime early this year,while contemplating on how to fabricate iron doors and windows using mostly angle iron bars and glass plus pieces of flat bar strips,it then turned out that this was an irreplaceable and most reliable option for certain areas of the design, so I say well done to you and for any one who is interested in my own design idea ,you can do so by directly responding to my comment for me to provide more details

I use this technique for making equipment stands for A/C units. This makes a stronger stand than a 45˚ miter and it is easier to keep the stand square. Keep all the welds on the bottom for a smooth top surface

Instead of having to miter (2) separate 45 degree angles to match perfectly on four different sides, I’d much rather cut (1) 90 degree angle and slap it into a factory edge. Well done brotha! 🍻 I’ll have to forever use this lol so many times when I was starting out in fabrication, I struggled to get a true 45 degree miter every time. This technique is so simple yet, it’s clearly a thought out engineered design, meant for structural integrity as well as aesthetically pleasing weld joints. 👏 👨‍🏭 🍺 🍺

I agree that each person should choose whichever method works best for them. With that said I suspect a lot of people who have trouble ending up with 90-degree corners, cutting half as many times with one quick slice on the 45 may have a heat distortion issue. Once you figure out where to tack first, which beads to run first and in what direction 90's are quick and easy.
@GavinClarkdiy
@GavinClarkdiy 4 года назад
I agree with you, but as some people only ever make one or two welding projects in their whole life, it's nice for them to have another way that may be easier for them to make the cuts. Thank you for your comment.
