I joined at age 34. Couldn't have been happier about my decision. I was so bored with my current life direction despite being a working professional with a college degree. i've met more and seen more in 6 months than i ever would have in 4 years as a civilian. my new job gives me access to a great civilian job and i'm outdoors working on radios couldn't be happier.

Even at MEPS out of 200 people swearing in for DEP that day, the next oldest was only 22. But I've come to realize with age also comes experience, maturity and the ability to be more self aware. I tried basic at 19 and i didnt make it. Couldn't handle it. I joined again and made it in a leadership position through basic training. Joining in your 30s gives you a better advantage as far as pursuing your goals. When you join younger, usually you will go for what sounds cool and you will be miserable. the top age of enlistment is going up across the board, and you can get wavers to get in even older still. A few months ago I talked with a retired Army officer that said that he has heard of people getting wavers to enlist in the army as old as 42 in recent years (possibly more because of the massive shortages and short falls in enlistment quotas making the Army fairly desperate for new soldiers). So even if you think you're too old, late 30s or even early 40s, don't be afraid to go to a recruiter, go to MEPS, get checked out and see if you can get a waiver, cause there accepting new recruits at older ages now.

I'm 34. No education. Stuck in a retail job. I've always wanted to serve my country but it looks like air force is my only option. My soon to be wife is now pregnant. I'm now looking forward to enlisting, full active duty. But I don't know what I want once inside. I'll focus on getting a high asvab score. My toughest academic challenge is algebra. It's frustrating. Like decoding alien language. I like active jobs. I would not survive in the office world lol. Honestly, if they just wanted to hand me a rifle and say make sure no one enters this building I'd likely be alright with that lol.
@yourmilitarymoney
@yourmilitarymoney 5 лет назад
You should have many options in the Air Force. Not everyone in the Air Force is good at math which is why you'll have to take the ASVAB. The ASVAB will highlight your strengths and the Air Force would put you in a career field/job where your strengths can be applied. Be in good physical shape, contact a recruiter and begin your journey. If you do join, you can serve 20 years, travel the world and serve your country. It's a great option. Keep me posted if you'd like.

The d6 of fate good luck. I joined the military at 34 also but it was Army. A decision that I do have regrets on especially since I most likely could have joined Air Force and wouldn't have to deal with as much crap (that's not to say that there's no crap in the AF at all because the AF is still the military. But in general it shouldn't be as bad as it would be in the Army). I actually had a high ASVAB score (88) and college. But I take it a day at a time. But if you can join AF, go AF. Good luck.

I make good money for my area as a network engineer and been in IT for going on 9 years since I got my associates in 2013. However I’ve lived in the same area my entire life and some of the things I used to find enjoyable feel like a broken record, I feel something is missing from my life. I grew up with Air Force posters on my ceiling.. and said if school didn’t work out.. I’d go military.. well.. school worked out.. but I yearn to feel the pride of serving my country.. I get emotional just thinking about it.. very highly considering walking in a recruiting office very soon.

I'm at the age of 32, I wanted to join as active duty next year but I need to save money up first. I could do the reserve route, letting me stay at my home and a cushy accounting job but then I won't get that active experience. Also, I like to have 100% benefits the GI Bill so I can get MBA. So, I might have to join at 34 or 35 active duty then go to reserves later to do the MBA in my 40's. I'm thinking enlistment in new career field like Cyber, or Linguist intelligence or try the OTS Officer route right away.

Hi- I just saw your video and it was very informative. Thank you. I am a 38 year old military spouse & have deaply regretted not joining the service in my early 20s. My husband is about to retire and now that the age limit has been lifted- I am seriously considering joining the AF reserves. My question is - "Is it too late to get a commission at 38 or would I have to to make a career as an enlisted flightmen ?" I have a bachelor's degree in teaching and 13+ years of teaching experience. Thank you for any advice.

Here is the deal... I served in the USMC when I was a youngster... Now I'm in my forties and I wish I could go back into the service BUT I'm too old. With this knowledge, if you are late in life and realize that you want to join the military.... My recommendation is.... RUN, don't walk, to the recruiter and join... Do not miss the age cut off. Do NOT be sitting on your couch in your forties or fifties wishing that you would have served but it's too late... These regrets can be miserable. HOWEVER, if you are older then prepare for the challenge of being commanded by young people... The military is different then the private sector and this will definitely happen. So be prepared to set your life experience and physical age aside... You need to make your own bones and leave your pride at the door. Semper Fi!

What a great video with great information! I'm 35 years old considering enlisting in the Air Force. Small back ground, I was very close to join the military at the age of 19, but was persuaded out of doing so and that has been my biggest regret. Fast forward to now, I'm 35, not married, and feeling very unhappy in my current job in sales. I don't feel like I am doing something that MATTERS. I was recently talking to someone about regretting not joining before, which made me start thinking about it again. And after doing research, found that I still have an opportunity to be a part of something that MATTERS! What do you think is the biggest thing to consider during this decision making process? Thanks again for the great video!
@yourmilitarymoney
@yourmilitarymoney 7 лет назад
If you're ready for a change of life (at least 4 years), consider the Air Force. You could do a 4 year tour of active duty that will take you away from everyone you know and where you are. Four years fly by. You might like it or not, but again four years fly by and and you'll have experienced something bigger than us and that MATTERS. A big thing to consider is physical fitness. If you're in good shape and can run, you'll be fine. Once you get to your first base, the running will slow down unless you maintain it. Basic Military Training (BMT) may be challenging but you'll be fine. It's like a game and meant to tear down individuals and make them one team. I say go for it. Research it and if it's a great fit, do it. If I can help, let me know.

I now have 2 kids and I’m wanting better stability and positive changes for my kids and I. In hopes of scoring high, I can see myself already in the military (Air Force) ✈️ I am pretty well in shape but I need to work on my running which I dislike doing. My point is that, I seriously want to be in the military at the most 20 years then I can collect my retirement pay BUT I’ll already be entering in the military in my 30s and exiting out possibly in my 50s.. ugh, what life can I have after that? I’m trying to think positive though!

Hi Jai- good for you that you’re exploring career options with the Air Force. One way to think about 20 years from now is- if you don’t join the Air Force, where and what will you be doing in 20 years? Joining the Air Force offers so much overall. If you serve 20 years, you’ll gain so much- training, stability, continued health, travel, experience and serving your country. If you join and you’re focused, you can accomplish so much and slow things down into retirement. See if joining is a good fit for you and of course, do what’s best for yourself and your children.

I'm 28, and I have thought about joining in my early 30s if certain opportunities don't come my way. I hear from both sides of military experience, from the "best decision I ever made" to "don't do it, it's not as glamours as they make it sound." Air Force also is a very technical branch, I have a degree in the humanities, not sure what direction I would want to go in yet. I'm in good shape for the most part, with the exception of some plantar fasciitis in my foot that comes and goes, so that be problematic with all the expected running.

Out of all the vlogs on YT about The Air Force I find yours to be the most informative and mature. At the time of this comment I am 30 and I have made my decision to join the reserve as a flight nurse. I understand there are retirement benefits after 20 years of service but I don’t understand something. If you sign up for 4 or 6 years, how do you acquire the remainder? If I get accepted I plan to continue in the USAF for a very long time as a reservist. I don’t think AD would be ok for me at this time but things may change. I would appreciate your answer! Thanks for your time.
@yourmilitarymoney
@yourmilitarymoney 7 лет назад
Thank you for the kind words. If you join the AF Reserve, you'll do either a 4 or 6 year initial contract. After you fulfill your contract, it will be up to you to continue or not. If you decide not to continue after your contract, then your military time stops there. I say see how you like it, weight the pros and cons and do what's best for you. You'll also learn the processes once you join. Best of luck and I'm always standing by to assist.

The sticking point is that I would be an E4 if I did, that's silly. I do have a state job, so getting deployed or time off for drill is not an issue. Well, accept for that family thing.
@yourmilitarymoney

You will get credit for your prior service of 5 years. If you come into the guard/reserve, you could qualify for a retirement after completing your last 15 years. You would have to go through MEPS again but it would be worth it to come back in part-time. Speak with your family and see if it's something you want to look into. I think it's a great option!

Im so glad i ran into your video, it's really informative. Thanks so much for sharing your insights. I'm 34yrs old and thinking about joining the AF Reserve mainly for the student loan repayment program, and to gain hands on experience in my field. I initially though of going in to the Medical Service Corp since I have a Masters in Healthcare Admin, but then I'm stuck simply because of the GRE requirement. Prior to Grad school, I was exempt from taking the GRE so I never did sit for the exam. My current dilemma is the cost to take this exam, plus no guarantees of meeting the AF score requirement on my first attempt. So now I'm thinking instead of sitting around, maybe it's best to go in with the Bachelors and once in, apply to the MSC. My question to you is; 1. how challenging is it to transition or move up to the next ranking in the force? 2. Your take on student loan repayment. I've heard few people state how challenging it can be but then there's no way to really substantiate what's being said
@yourmilitarymoney
@yourmilitarymoney 5 лет назад
1. Moving up the ranks is pretty easy as long as your work/person reputation is solid, you know and do your job well, you complete your Professional Military Education (PME) as it applies and you meet the time in grade (rank) timelines. If you join, you'll learn all of this in time. 2. From what I've heard, the Air Force Reserve isn't doing the student loan repayment plan. If you're speaking about the one outside of the Air Force, I've heard many apply and few get approved. I like Dave Ramsey's take on it as he says you'll be strapped repaying your loans for a minimum of 10 years so just attack the loans yourself sooner rather than later. Keep me posted if you'd like on your progress.
