A visit back to see the Building of Bridge 85, Schoolhouse Bridge on the Montgomery canal as well as the new lining works taking place near to Crickheath Wharf
The last major obstruction before reaching Wales on the Monty canal. Looking back to the construction and where the project is now it is nearly finished.
The Monty is a major project on the network with initial aims to get to Welshpool on the current complete sections after the success of rewatering to Crickheath basin.
On this site near to Shrewsbury and Oswestry we take a look at Beaver Bridges lifting the sections in place.

Very interesting update showing how modern methods of lining can blend in with the natural environment in this very impressive restoration project. Thank you.

It’s going very well, I go to a lot of restorations and this is currently one of the fastest, all those sections will be joined up soon. Once they reach the border the bridges needed on the other side will come quickly

I regularly visit the Monty on my boat and have now moored a few times at the newly opened Crickheath section. I also drive down now and then to view the progress featured here. This has been astonishing over the past year how much has been done on the section towards Schoolhouse Bridge. Regularly follow your updates too, this one is excellent, many thanks.

I was on the Montgomery canal a month ago and walked from Crickheath basin along that same section through to Pant. It's interesting to see how much progress they've made in such a short space of time. We came across a guy with nothing but a couple of hand tools clearing the undergrowth on his own, I was not expecting progress to be so quick 😂 We were one of about half a dozen boats moored up in the basin for the night. It's a cracking bit of canal to cruise along, but don't anyone! 🤣🤣

They have a deadline with things which has helped spur it on but it’s still incredible progress. It’s amazing what a couple of people can do with limited tools and funds!

Fantastic to see the progress in my ignorance i just thought it would be twice as deep allowing for silt build up and other debris over time but what do i know

@@GarethNorthwood-s8n most canals you can stand up in, they aren’t deep at all. Canals like the cotswolds are much deeper but they took sea going vessels

The Summit Level on the Wey & Arun (under restoration) was constructed twice as deep (6ft) as the rest of the canal, to act as it's own main reservoir in times of drought. Honestly not sure how it worked, but I'm not aware of any horror stories from it's commercial life.
@CourtAboveTheCut
@CourtAboveTheCut 7 дней назад
@@TheHoveHeretic it’s common for canals to make the summit larger In some way, the wilts and berks canal is quite a lot wider through Swindon. Having that large water capacity helped in times of drought, although most canals struggle in warm months at summits.

Hello Sir , Wont some of them blocks come loose ? I've seen when our local canal is drained all loose bricks from the locks wall on the canal bed .Did you see a couple of year ago Taylors aboard a narrow boat walked all this canal .
@CourtAboveTheCut
@CourtAboveTheCut 10 дней назад
@@JustinGeorge-x9q they are heavy dense concrete blocks so won’t float, they are also well below the draft line so should be knocked loose. Bricks/blocks in a canal have usually come from a vertical wall rather than a load down block, you’d physically have to move them and that wouldn’t be easy as they gain strength from all the blocks side but side

They're all ready joined, what a waste of Money for a handful of enthusiasts!
@CourtAboveTheCut
@CourtAboveTheCut 5 дней назад
@@petes5041 there’s more to it than that, local economies benefit massively from open waterways, figures pre covid (which are now considered low due to changes in habits) found each mile of restored canal brings on average 100,000 people to it within a 12 month period, from boaters, holiday makers, cyclists, walkers and locals, those people on average spend £10 each. Meaning on average every mile of the canal network brings in £1 million pound to the local economy per annum. You can then add health and well-being figures to this, which conservatively sit at 4-5x the economic value, this is stuff like savings to the NHS from more people using a cycle way, walks etc and becoming healthier as it’s on their doorstep, it also includes environmental benefits from both trees, cars off roads, connected habitats and further green growth around a restored channel. So no it’s not a waste of money for a handful of enthusiasts it’s worth tens of millions to the area. The canal network is worth something like £6.4 Billion per annum to the the country, and receives less than £40 million per year from the government.
