Committed to bridging the access to services of remote communities and to assess support provided following the devastation of TC Harold in April 2020, a first ever joint expedition by the Fijian Government, United Nations (UN), Civil Society Organisations and the media to the Southern Lau Group took place from 3 - 8 November 2020.
The delegation was jointly led by the Minister for Defence, National Security and Policing, Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Honourable Inia Seruiratu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete and by the UN Resident Coordinator, Sanaka Samarasinha.
Recognising that remote communities require comprehensive solutions to their lived realities, the 75-member contingent delivered integrated services to five of the most remote islands in Fiji namely, Moala, Totoya, Matuku, Vatoa and Ono-i-Lau.
These integrated services targeted issues related to disaster recovery and preparedness, health, women and children’s issues, youth, people living with disabilities, entrepreneurship, telecommunication, education, welfare, legal assistance, former peacekeepers, agriculture, police and security and gender-based violence.
