Do you enjoy your career ? And how long have you been doing this for ? I have been a infantryman for 7 years and I want to become a iron worker. Specifically I am very interested in the portion to do with connecting. You guys are the back bone that builds America, this shit is super impressive man
Adam Sheridan Hey there buddy, I know you pasted this a year ago but figured I could add my two cents. I've been a Union Ironworker for nine years now, and I have to say for the right person it's one of the best damn jobs out there. The only problem I've ever had is when work dries up and you find yourself on the bench a little too long. Hopefully by now you've looked into it a bit, but if you haven't look into "Helmets to Hardhats" like Chris said, it's a good program.
I didn't make the video but I'm a union Ironworker so I can tell you how to get into the Ironworkers. What city and state do you live in? There are Iron Workers Union Halls all over the United States and Canada you would have to pick a home local....? My home is local 378 Oakland. You're not going to be a connector when you first start out in the Ironworkers although what they were doing in the video was a very simple pic of a small bar joist which is way different when you're hanging iron floor beams and the big gigantic girders that we connect way in the sky it's a different animal ...We can hang 120 to 200 pieces of iron each day ....structural steel Ironworkers work like dogs every single day....Why? We love it.. Dangerous by choice
The constant tying off and dragging that choker and lanyard everywhere will leave you exhausted at the end of the day. So glad in my day it was 100% no tie off.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! Guys u have all my respect! Lol, im retired from construction a union laborer, i worked in underground, watermain, sanitary etc. But my best friend is an ironworker rerired. U guys are unbelievable thanks to u guys we have a awesome country, thank u for such courage!!!, b safe men👍
@@tommychiletti8506 im thinking about doing this trade small buildings dont seem difficult but those 30 story buildings are the ones im scared of honestly lol
@@knickstape2559 nice,I was making 15,was talking to a welder at a shop about steel erecting and the job I was doing,he said there's some jobs in Louisiana right now, told me a connector/structural welder are making 29,told me I was working too hard,I was doing commercial, the entire building, frame, insulation ,skins, roof panels,I'ma check it out in a month or so,good luck,
I do commercial steel buildings. Never more than a single story but I carry a dewalt 20v 1)2" brushes impact with me to tighten bolts. One day I stuffed and tightened fifty lbs of 1/2" bolts. Idk if I could do that with a hand wrench. lol!
Yes the bolt up gang comes behind them and fills every hole. The cranes are expensive so they like to put enough bolts in the iron to keep it up and keep it moving. Instead of having the x amount of dollar an hour crane waiting on guys to get every bolt in
Adam Sheridan, my son's both CIB recipients, both Iraq & Afghanistan, joined Local Union #48, OKC. The International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Iron Workers. My son's joined on the "Helmets to Hardhats" program. You should as well... as long as your not afraid of heights.
so living in Canada we do have unions who hire, but very seldom, how do you get into this trade if you have 0 experience, I have sent resume to unions and heard nothing even took a welding course.
Get on google and find your local union for your area, then find out when theyre taking apprenticeship applications, go fill one out and pray for the call. Once you do that youll have a 3-5 year apprenticeship where youll learn everything you need to know. Even apprentices earn excellent wages. You even get paid for the combined 160 hours of classroom time. Youll be a journeyperson

Get a good choker, and tape the mouse back! What local are you? Cool video, but I can really make your job faster, and in my opinion safer. (osha still agrees). Rig the choker over, and threw the ball will a twist. It will pop off. I have done joints/trusses for years. Chi-town old school.
Iam a second year and just conected for the first time today....lets just say i learned alot of what to do and some what of what not to do😏How would you do this safer and faster
