You're absolutely right, Korbin. Taika Waititi is an absolutely brilliant filmmakers. One of the best around today. I would highly recommend watching 'Boy' and 'Hunt For The Wilderpeople'.

Another brilliant Waititi film that flew under the radar is "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" as well as "Boy". Very funny with alot heart...seems to be in a similar vein as this film.

Thank you for being one of few who seem to get this movie. You can tell it is satire without having have to see it written on the poster. Even with it on the poster people don't seem to get it. That line about just being a 10 year old boy wanting to belong says so much about how some people end up joining groups.

Saw this film today and everything you sense about is 100% correct... in addition the soundtrack includes Classical from Strauss & Wagner; contemporary WWII performers such as Glenn Miller AND The Beatles, Tom Waits, & David Bowie!!!! It is brilliant in every way and I must point out that Sam Rockwell's performance as a drunken, thickheaded Nazi (who is hiding his own secret) is brilliant and his character performs not just one, but two of the most powerful acts of heroism i have ever seen depicted in any "war movie" ever

This is not the first film to do this. The first one was the Producers. Then there was the reboot and then Iron Sky and Iron Sky the coming race.

This reminds me a lot of something Mel Brooks would have made.

Most reviews is they don't mention the richness of of Scarlet Jo's character. She plays a mother who's husband is in the reich and off fighting the war. She is left to raise her son by herself while harbouring a Jew which was extremely dangerous during WWII. There's a really important argument scene at the dinner table where she loses it with her son when he says he wants to see is Dad and is left with his mom. She loses it and grabs her husbands service uniform and rub soot on her face to make beard. And she hits the table saying "Don't talk to your God damn mother that way!" The part where she retreats and starts talking to herself as if her husband was there and returns to apologies to her son. She was apologizing because she realized her son did not no anything better. So is a mother raising a child under the reich, and everyday she shows to the public the image of the perfect woman of the reich, while raising a fascistic kid and harbouring a Jew at the same time. The scene where she is pretending to dance with her husband shows she is heartbroken from him being away and wishes they were together as a family. But she must be strong for her son and the Jew girl. So survives by living positively day by day and sees the beauty it the world. It was not only just satire, it was also a rich war drama at the sametime. You got very "In the army now, Mchails Navy" type simple humor mixed in with "Stand by me" and the drama of "It's a beautiful life" and "Amelie". Having all those elements the movie was a master piece! And Scarlet Jo's performance as the mother was absolute perfection. Bonus commentary. The scene right after her death showing the house windows looking like pairs of creepy eyes mean't people and neighbors were snitches. It was quite common during that time for neighbors and children to rat on others and their parents to the gestapo.

I watched the movie yesterday. It's such an amazing movie and the kid who plays Jojo is absolutely brilliant.

TAIKA is such a genius Just loved WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS HUNT FOR THE WILDER PEOPLE and everyone has watched THOR: RAGNAROK Random person scrolling through comments if you haven't watched his movies you SHOULD HE IS A GENIUS.

So glad you guys get what TW is doing here. So rare to get such an original film these days and diverse stuff like this should be embraced.

You guys didn't pick up on the fact that Taika Waititi was the imaginary "Hitler" friend. Hahaha. When you realise it, it's gonna make you feel "stupid" 🤪

Ok so Hitler Youth was compulsory for Arian boys age 10 and up. The BDM was not compulsory but was strongly popularised for girls who could prove all of their grandparents were Arian. The point being to indoctrinate an entire generation, train the boys early to be soldiers and encourage the girls to have lots of Arian babies and be a volunteer community workforce. Most of the stuff they made fun of actually routinely happened. They had summer camps a lot like scout camps which were often poorer boys first holidays. They gave these children weapons training and had neighbouring camps attack each other in mock battles using hand to hand combat, they were incouraged to beat each other up in gangs basically. They taught them all that nonsense about Jews in school and at Hitler Youth. The girls sang, did volunteering, learnt women's craft, care of babies, visited wounded soldiers and we're encouraged to have as many kids as possible, older girls often came home from trips pregnant and theres the whole lebensborn thing. Both male and female children's organizations were used as soldiers during the invasion of Germany at the end of the war. One squad of BDM girls were manning anti-aircraft guns and ran away when the bombs got very close. They were shot for abandoning their post in time of war. They were just very poorly trained teenage girls. Yes he emphasized the ridiculous nature of the situation, but the violence and lack of care for children was quite accurate.

Saw the film yesterday and was flabbergasted. What a film. Totally deserves to be in the oscar conversation. I haven't seen all the nominated movies but wouldn't be surprised if this comes out as surprise winner

You should watch; BOY and HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE, also films by Taika. Then you will understand more about comedy and the children characters' imagination and prespective.

it looks great , one thing that annoys me with a lot of films now is that the girls have to always upstage the boys. It looks like the girl gets to civilise the toxic male boy. if the film had a Stand By Me vibe I'd be totally there. the Jewish person could have been a wise old man like The Boy in the striped pajamas or another boy but no I assume the choice is deliberate
