JOKER ENDING (2019) | "That's Life" 

There's a theory that the entire film is a lie told by the Joker, a made up backstory and that this is current day Gotham where Batman is a present. To quote the Clown himself from the Killing Joke "if I'm to have a past, I'd prefer it to be multiple choice." I really like this theory and hope it's true

i love how this scene shows that in the beginning of the movie, the therapist doesnt listen and has no interest in what he has to say- while he is trying to tell her everything thats wrong with him and what he needs help with. then at the end the therapist is yearning for him to say anything that can explain his new behavior- and he no longer wants to talk anymore.

Once he started singing “that’s life” the filmmakers basically were setting up joke 2: the musical.

this is the first time in the whole movie where he laughs from his heart.

I noticed Joker has 3 types of laughs throughout the whole movie: (1) the laugh that he cannot control because of his medical condition, (2) the fake laugh when he mocks someone for trying to be funny, and (3) the genuine laugh when something IS funny.

In the script, after Joker says ''You wouldn't get it'' he was supposed to add ''This is between me and him''. That's a clue as to what made him laugh.

I always liked the theory that the last scene with Joker in Arkham with the therapist was a reveal that he was telling that story to her the entire time of something that happened years ago. At that moment he gets the revelation that the young kid he knew as Bruce Wayne is Batman, the same person responsible for his current, yet brief incarceration in Arkham. He laughs because he realizes that he was responsible for creating the very person that got him locked up. But there is also a sense of power now because he realizes that Batman was HIS doing. Which is why they allude to him killing his therapist (seeing his blood stained footsteps was an amazing way to allude to that) and breaking out of Arkham because he now has a new purpose.

Loneliness, rejection, bullying, abuse can really drive someone like Arthur Fleck to pure madness and violence.

1:34 I still get chills when hearing him chuckle through the lyrics. Joaquin Phoenix absolutely crushed the complex character of the joker.

2:43 I always like to think that the orderly was chasing the Joker at first, but the second time they run by, it's the Joker chasing him.

"And Remember that's life"

When the sequel comes out, it's gonna be absolutely huge. Breaking records.

There’s something really satisfying about this ending and I don’t know why

My mom: why are you looking at a guy laughing? Me: you wouldn’t get it

My theory is that this is the joker some time after the events of the film where he has been locked up in a mental hospital for being the joker. I feel like he’s laughing at the fact that he was the reason batman was created, which is why it cuts to Bruce and his dead parents. A lot of people think that the whole movie was in his head but I only think some of it was, I think he genuinely did become the joker by killing Murray.

I know this is unlikely but I like to think that this scene takes place years later and Bruce has become batman already and Arthur is just connecting it all together and knows Bruce is batman

Perfect timing on that song, had me in tears by the end

The brilliance of this movie is that it was filmed in New York which is indeed rapidly turning into Gotham City in 2024

If Joker 2 really is a musical, I guess this could be like subtle foreshadowing

I didn’t understand this ending when I first saw this movie, but now I do. He killed her as we can see his bloody footprints on the floor as he walks out of what I assume is “Arkham Asylum.” Finally actually becoming The Joker.

The joke: What walks into an alley with six legs, but leaves with only two? The Wayne Family.

Flat out ended the film with a Scooby-Doo chase sequence...and it's brilliant!

Theory: this lady isn't a therapist. She's a detective there to ask questions for one of Jokers schemes. She locks herself in a room with Arthur, and he finds a way to kill him.

One of the greatest acting performances never seen on screen. Sure Joachim has put the bad moments of his life (sad childhood and crazy youth and losses) in this character

"See, there were these two guys in a lunatic asylum... and one night, one night they decide they don't like living in an asylum any more. They decide they're going to escape! So, like, they get up onto the roof, and there, just across this narrow gap, they see the rooftops of the town, stretching away in the moon light... stretching away to freedom. Now, the first guy, he jumps right across with no problem. But his friend, his friend didn't dare make the leap. Y'see... Y'see, he's afraid of falling. So then, the first guy has an idea... He says 'Hey! I have my flashlight with me! I'll shine it across the gap between the buildings. You can walk along the beam and join me!' B-but the second guy just shakes his head. He suh-says... This scene is so damn cool. This is definitely Arthur years in the future, most likely after Bruce becomes Batman and locks him away at Arkham yet again. He’s either realizing that Bruce is Batman and finds it hilarious that he was the reason for it, or he’s thinking of the joke about inmates and the flashlight from the killing joke. Either way it’s a great ending that’s so open for interpretation. They really got the Joker right here.

by the way, most dont count the end as one of the deaths in kill-count video's in the film, but if you'll notice the bloody footprints he leaves as he is walking away, he killed the woman who was interviewing him

Hell this is a beautiful looking movie! Im sure this film’s winning Best actor and best cinematography mark my words

Imagine how crazy the ending would have been instead of the shot of bruce looking over his dead parents to batman in a dark shadow looking over arkham asylum

I loved Heath, but this was GOLDEN.

I believe it was all in his mind. That laughing & crying/emotional pain is characteristic of someone who goes in and out of episodes - I’ve been there. When someone asks “why are you laughing?” (while faced with talking about difficult things) the thought of having to explain it all and knowing where to even start, it’s too exhausting and overwhelming, the emotion comes to the surface all at once (and suddenly the saying “if you didn’t laugh, you’d cry” comes to life) and you revert back to type instead. It’s easier sometimes, especially when dealing with authorities/organisations whose numbers, targets & pre-conceived ideas don’t allow individuals working for them to ever actually do their job properly, be able to allocate the time, care & resources into really hearing & helping someone - (which I’m sure Arthur references when he first meets his therapist.

1:58 I just finished watching Vertigo for the first time and there is a scene where a woman slowly walks down a hallway of a mental institution framed almost exactly like in this film and they're walking with the same tempo. It's a nice homage to a great film that I just picked up and it makes me appreciate The Joker even more.

I like how they ended this movie like it was meant to be a standalone film but it became a huge hit and grossed over a billion dollars at the box office and the sequel has officially been greenlit and is coming out. Definitely can’t wait for the sequel!

Except for the Murray show fantasy, this is the first time he truly laughed. You can see it in his eyes. The pain isn't there. Genius

Ok I think that joker learned the identity of Batman and that's why he says "you wouldn't get it" after we see bruce at 0:53 , he thinks this is funny because he created his worst enemy. ( I guess we'll never know)

I’ve always seen the joke as being chaos. Chaos begetting chaos, pain begetting pain, and just through his own act of madness and liberation he helped creating a champion of order in Batman

You know the most weird thing? We hear that life song and it beggins to show us that credits are near BUT he starts singing too… all the film all music was supported with any real things that play it BUT this time we see that this music is in the joker head…

In my head, this is the joker’s predecessor, someone who’s actions led to the birth of the more modern joker by creating the primordial soup

The ending makes sense why the 2nd part is gonna be musical because joker thinks that way music makes his dream a structure.

One of my favorite ideas to use batman for a joker movie is based off the really dark and twisted Joker comic book. Where you never really see Batman until the end and its Joker being chased by his shadow while exploring their inexplicable tie to each other. Dives into his madness, and deranged insanity that may push the limits of what they are trying to do but it would be a fascinating way of using Batman in this Joker universe

What’s scary is for people who have such fragile and bad mental health. People like myself. Who realise how easy it is to let that final thread snap and we lose it. Maybe not on the level of the joker but it does scare me at times.

I think, someone might have already felt it, his smile gives weird emotion. In movie, he has already laughed countless times, but it seemed little bitter. However, by the end of the film, last scene ( he laughs at hospital) makes us feel relieved. This is my interpretation; so far, JOKER has faced problems in life. He has been marginalized by society, and his counselors never interested in his real problem;they just treated him formally. So in last scene, JOKER says, "You wouldn't get it". This reflects how little society cares for the weak. 10909

If they ever made a Batman movie similar to Spider-Man No Way Home I'd have Joaquin Phoenix's version of the Joker make a cameo in a post-credit scene

I loathe the endless stream of comic book/superhero films but Joker was an extraordinary film imo Joaquin Phoenix delivered another outstanding performance

I didnt love this movie like most people did (I still really liked it), but I LOVED this ending. When he starts dancing in front of the window, I couldnt help but smile at this murderous psycho having a blast. Really cool, and weird.

I kinda wish the physiatrist was Harely Quinn, but then again if he intended to kill her, it would work.

The Batman of this universe will be scary as fuck

I can't wait for the sequel. I'm sure that when Joker meets Harley, he's thinking about killing her too. He will have a knife or a piece of glass hidden and before he pulls it out, Harley says something that sparks his interest. Either her being interesting in a joke or her showing she's not too different from him.

Maybe this is just me looking into things too deeply, but I'd like to think at least part of "the joke" Joker was laughing at involved the lyric " Some people get their _kicks stomping_ on a _dream_ ". The Joker probably realizes the therapist's dream was to help redeem violent criminals, but in reality, her dream is about to get "stomped on" just like Arthur's dreams were stomped on for his entire life, leading to his transformation into The Joker. Figuratively, he is going to "stomp on her dreams" by proving to her that some criminals cannot be redeemed. Some criminals are just too far gone, and if you lower your guard because you are trying to help them, they'll take the opportunity to end your life. Also, based on the blood on Joker's shoes, he most likely both figuratively and literally "kicked/stomped on her dreams" by stomping on her head, where dreams come from, until she was dead.

I don't think he knows Bruce is batman in the end.... I think he just finds it funny that his actions caused Thomas and Martha to die and make Bruce an orphan. I bet the news of them dying got around, and Joker here is just connecting the dots to why they died.

Quite interesting that it says “The End” despite having a sequel on the cards, I don’t know many other films that have done that.

Well, Joker had a happy ending. Why? My theory about the movie: *Arthur Fleck suffered childhood abuse and trauma that created mental and emotional illness. He took care of his mother, worked, sought treatment and tried to get better. Demonstrations grew, along with corruption. After losing everything, Arthur went from being weak, fearful and frustrated to becoming Joker. (A court jester who uses his tragic life as a comedy to please the king and the commoners.) Proving that Arthur has another personality. Why? Well, her pathological laugh faded, her confidence and persuasiveness increased, but for bad. Arthur not only lost everything, he also lost his fight against himself and Joker. He managed to make Gotham worse at first, and then better because he was indirectly responsible for the origin of Batman. Bruce Wayne since childhood had a strange mind, but incredible intelligence (Arthur was no different). Are just opposite sides of the card.*

I read once and idea I really liked. What we are watching at the end is him being asked about his past, The movie shows us his past. The Joke he laughs at is the entire story even the part about him imagining a romance is 100% true. However, because he is mentally ill no one would believe him anyway, so he makes something new up every time.

After he shot Murray, right before the camera cut him off, I think he was gonna say "and always remember, that's life". Also, I think that same song was hinting Bruce Wayne's whole life, which is the joke Joker might have thought of

The therapist might be the first person he kills just cause, he killed the there guys in self defence and killer Murray to send a message but the therapist he just did it for him

That's the same therapist and look how presented she looks. Not for Arthur but for her career. He knew what she was doing. Everyone was just for themselfs. And that's what made him feel alone.
