It has been claimed by so many sources that Ledger improvised the detonator scene, but Nolan confirmed the explosion was intentionally delayed (and not a malfunction as is usually reported), due to safety regulations. They had to ensure that Ledger was at a safe enough distance before setting off the explosion.

Not only that, Nolan could only have Ledger practice the hospital explosion/detonator scene about 12 times due to safety concerns as it took a lot of time to set up the explosives. The entire time they practiced 12 times the explosives were 100% LIVE so when the final climax was in action you could imagine the stress and excitement.

13:40 It's not true though. Joker had an extremely detailed plan with a fail safety all along. He is a mastermind. He says that he's a dog without a plan to Harvey to manipulate him into questioning his morals, his belief for the system and push him into anarchy. If you look carefully, when Harvey is flipping the coin and pointing the gun at him, Joker is holding the hammer of the gun, so even if he loses the flip and Harvey pulls the trigger the gun doesn't go off.

Great point. I work with children for a living, and I see daily how we lie to kids to protect their world. Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, the dog went to a farm, the tetanus shot wont hurt....one by one, the lies fall away and people smile less and less. In a hospital surgical setting, we sometimes hide true odds to the patient to give them hope, because we've found that....when they give up hope.....then tend to die on the operating table.

Well, "fair" isn't actually fair. When you think about what is fair, you always look at it from your own or someone's perspective. And perspective is, most of the time, biased in some way. Loved the discussion of Batman having to confront a type of antagonist he’d never dealt with before, and having to decide what lines he’s willing to cross. It was a small thing, easy to miss, but Alfred helped him make that decision. Right after Rachel was killed and Alfred brings Bruce his breakfast, Bruce asks how they caught the bandit in Burma. Alfred’s hesitant answer: “We burned the forest down.” For a man like the Joker, you have to go scorched earth. Be willing to do *whatever* it takes. So Bruce builds the machine that lets him spy on the city’s whole population. Hugely unethical, yes, but it was the only way. Such a great movie!

And when the guy who said he'd kill people for every day Batman didn't reveal himself and blow up a hospital did exactly what he said he'd do, I argue they did the smart thing by not calling his bluff. Just because he was a step ahead by actually lying in his threat that time doesn't mean it wasn't the safer bet.

The joker is in no way just doing it. He's got plans and back up plans. During the interrogation scene, Ledger told Christian Bale to actually hit him so he could sell the performance, and it worked perfectly. Now THAT is dedication to one's craft. Two-Face IS a classic Batman villain, his psyche torn between bad and not-so-bad, and obsessed with chance and fairness. @@nickreacts6394 But that's not Joker's way of thinking. He switched the addresses so that the decision would cause the most damage to Batman. If he were to switch the detonators, the living boat might think that their nobility and willingness to sacrifice saved them. Instead Joker would want the living to be haunted by the choice they made and slowly turn mad. That is his main point, anyone can and will be like him under the right circumstances. @tornadochaser2457
@tornadochaser2457 2 года назад
I feel like his heart to heart with Harvey is genuine, and that's why the scenes carry so much weight - However, I must say, you seem to be right - Even if what the Joker is saying is that his plans don't have any reasoning behind them, even that's not true, as he intends to show people that it's only established structures that make them civilised and "good", and that when that becomes undone, they'll be selfish, repugnant savages. I think it does make sense though as what the Joker means is that, he's not operating within the framework of progress for society via authoritative institutions. He's operating on a chaotic framework, without society's established structure, where he just comes up with plans on the fly. I do think the movie should've made this a bit clearer in his speech, but I think it's there to see.

I noticed that the "random" coin flips were not actually random: heads (Joker), tails (Wertz), heads (Maroni), tails (Maroni's driver), heads (Ramirez), tails (Batman), heads (himself). Just alternating HTHTHTH. Either the screenwriters did this on purpose to make the audience subconsciously fear that Gordon's son was definitely about to be killed (with the next tails), or it's just another testament to the fact that humans have a notoriously tough time figuring out what's truly random or non-random.
@alsims2007
@alsims2007 2 года назад
Obviously it was a choice by the screenwriters because i don't think you film a movie with alternate outcomes based on the random flip of a coin... although i think I would love to watch a movie like that, but I think it's more of a testament to humans finding patterns in random things. in a true random coin flip the result has nothing to do with previous flips. it's always 50/50. the chances the coin alternates between heads and tails is no different than if it was all head or all tails. I do believe humans have a hard time with random but I don't think it applies to a film with a fixed outcome
@BJ52091
@BJ52091 2 года назад
@@alsims2007 I think you misunderstood my original point. Obviously the screenwriters deliberately wrote in the sequence as it appears in the movie, instead of flipping an actual coin to generate a pseudorandom sequence. My point was not how the sequence was generated but rather why it was generated. I speculate that either the screenwriters chose HTHTHTH knowing that most audience members think that that sequence is more random than sequences which have runs of heads or tails, while knowing better than that themselves; or else they also thought that HTHTHTH is "random" and accidentally fell for the same cognitive bias that most other people do.

I almost missed this reaction because i didn’t realize that part one was on a different channel. But I am glad, I did watch both parts. Great villains help make a better movie. Both characters (Harvey Two-Face and the Joker) were charismatic. This is by far my favorite super hero movie because it is grounded (the practical effects - truck flip). Lots of moral choices (Harvey or Rachel, boat), the threat feels real. Some great quotes (Some men just wanna watch the world burn AND You either die a hero or you live long enought so see yourself become the villain.) And the humor isn’t over the top, it is suble (blackmailing, delayed hospital explosion). The sourrounding makes the hero shine. Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors because he is old-school (practical effects, shooting on film - not digital).
@normlee6566
@normlee6566 2 года назад
The hospital building was set for demolition in real life, and Nolan convinced the contractor and property owner to allow him to do it. The delay in the explosions was planned (not improvised) in order to be able for Ledger to safely walk out and away from the building and then activate the finishing explosives when he was clear (after he acts confused about the delay). Obviously, this all had to be done in one take, so extensive planning for the gag was conducted.
@nickreacts6394
@nickreacts6394 2 года назад
Oh ok, someone else just said it was improvised but this has always been my suspicion for the reasons you explained. Huge demolitions are such an important thing on set (especially with safety), it just seems unlikely it would happen to delay. Still so awesome, and speaks to Nolan's vision turning a safety necessity into a brilliant Joker moment. Thanks for explaining!
@Jashtvorak
@Jashtvorak 2 года назад
Yeah, it’s an urban myth that it was supposed to go without the pause. The first wave of explosions are the prop ones and allowed Ledger to clear the scene. I believe that they made the pause so everybody knew when prop one ended and when real demolition started. But one scene was fully in Ledger’s hands, he was the director and it was the dialogue with fake Batman.
@richieclean
@richieclean 2 года назад
Of course what we don't see, because the shot was filmed but never used, is Ledger taking a seat in the bus as it drives away; he stayed in character throughout and never looked back at the explosion. Nolan remarked that it shows how dedicated he was to the role; most people wouldn't be able to resist the opportunity to see such a spectacular explosion at a relatively close distance.

I actually like Katie Holmes a lot. I liked her in movies like Go, The Gift, and especially Pieces of April. But she has a baby face, a little girl voice, and teenagery mannerisms, so she doesn't work for me as Rachel Dawes. I thought Maggie Gyllenhaal was great as Rachel Dawes.

Also if people knew that harvey was a murderer and a villain, every case he prosecuted would have been tainted and open to retrial.

Harvy Dent already jailed a slew of the mob and if he would be found out for what he did in the end all of those criminals would be let out because of his tainted behavior post Rachael's death so Batman took the fall for the betterment of the city. I think however if it was known that what happened to him when he lost her and went mad could've been contested

You are wrong about the ferry commuters. 1.)Joker TRICKED Gotham onto the ferry with his fake news broadcast at the bar, when he told people to get out of the city and....here's the trick: He said: "I wouldnt want to be part of the bridge and tunnel crowd" So more people....TOOK THE FERRY. They did exactly what Joker tricked them into doing. 2.)The ferry is not a shitty idea. They are ALL shitty ideas: You are trapped on the ferry, tunnel (?!) or bridge. All THREE are death trap. In bay cities like New York, San Francisco and Gotham, a ferry is a normal, legitimate, and SAFE way to commute. More importantly, it's usually pricey, so he trapped the RICHEST most CIVILIZED people ("these civilized people will eat each other...") on a boat. I think it may have been a coincidence that there was a prison transfer that same day. Either way, the boatpeople would have to test their own ethics that night.

If you didn't notice, Joker has a death wish. Every time he faces death, he gets excited. He wanted Batman to run him down, wanted Harvey to shoot him, wanted to fall to his death

Dude, the crazy shit about the truck flip isn't just that it's completely practical. I mean, yes, they absolutely did flip the truck, just like that, for real... but I was always more impressed by the fact that not ONLY did they pull it off, they actually did it in downtown Chicago. And it LOOKS like there are a decent amount of legitimate storefronts on that road, in the shot, and any one of them could've fucked this entire movie up if that truck flip was even a LITTLE off.

I want to speak on there conversation about the topic they spoke on about the city should back Batman..well officially the city can't do that..Batman for all his good is a vigilante and if they back him then anyone can just go out with guns most likely and do the same and you have a city in chaos. A city can't give one man whose identity is unknown free rein to do what Batman does then tell the citizens that they cant.

Just an observation, zero judgement: at 18:59 the girl says something on the lines of 'i would be afraid of the boat of criminals' which i understand is an intuitive thought but... why is it? the reality is that, unlike what she said, it doesnt take one criminal but simply one person, not even a 'bad' person, but a very afraid one. What kind of criminals are we assuming are in the boat? are they all mass murderers? in reality the majority of convicted people are black people due to weed possession for example, the movie doesnt stablish anything about it, even if they were murderers... there are many kind of murders, the majority doesnt have to do with cold blood serial killer kind of stuff, and black people are, again, unfairly judge. Her thought is a thought that i cant blame people to have but it is the main point of the Joker in the movie which is proven wrong (a bit on the nose) when nobody does anything and the Joker feels then need to do it himself. That thought is the Joker winning on the audience. You agreed with him that somebody will press the button and more so, that it should be the criminals because (outside the realm of the movie) we are primed to think people are bad and thats it, instead of thinking in the actual complexity of the situation.

I love most of this movie, but one dislike I have of this movie is the way it goes with the boats. What happens on the criminal boat makes more sense since it came to a point where no one could try, but for things on the civilian boat, there is no way with that many people you wouldn't have at least one who from the start would fight for the remote and set it off as fast as possible (though I'd expect a few). Especially with the results of the votes and all the fear these people are going through already.

That ship scene was the most unrealistic scene of the movie in my opinion (yes, including, the truck ;)). There is no way not one of the people would just have grabbed the detonator and pushed it.
