grew up around Barnet in the 60's. I miss the old library next to Barnet Church. The vicar of Barnet Church told me years ago the keyhole of the main door of Barnet Church is the same elevation above sea level as the top of the spire on St Paul's Cathedral
@abby4590lohan
@abby4590lohan 2 года назад
I'm confused how is a keyhole on sea level???
@jeffreyrwilliams9345
@jeffreyrwilliams9345 2 года назад
@@abby4590lohan its not, sealevel is baseline, benchmark. London sits approx sealevel, the spire on St Pauls may be 100 feet above sealevel, IDK, but traveling to Barnet from London you raise in elevation so the keyhole of the Barnet church is at same elevation as St Pauls spire. hope this helps

Joolz, I live in Barnet and you managed to find bits I have never seen. I shall follow in your footsteps however. Glad you visited The Mitre, which is definitely an old Coaching Inn at the top of Barnet Hill on the old A1 (now A1000). Obviously, the horses must have been tired out pulling coaches up the hill. Part of the rear of the Inn in the Garden has converted stables alongside the pub garden. Drinking Estella in an ale house? Funnily enough, I am reading Oliver Twist at the moment.

@@1942Johnnyred Yes mate. I lived at Clydesdale Close. I can't really think of any landmarks around there but not very far from Manor way? Cardif Pinnacle building near A1 motorway? I used to go to Hillside School. I don't really remember much it was 29 years ago when I lived there! I returned to London in 1993, my mother was a single mother with 3 children and we never had a car. Life was quite hard for us. I was born in London but brought up in Tokyo, Japan because my father is Japanese. My mother is English/Welsh. I couldn't speak a word of English and I had a support teacher sitting next to me and that. It was sort of big transitional time for all of us. Anyways after one year we had to move to Barnet cos rent leash has expired. Then I lived at Warwick Rd in Barnet. Close to High Barnet station. Went to East Barnet School and Barnet & Southgate College. Worked at New Barnet Saunsbury's night shift for about 4 years. I've been to few other places after that. Even went back to Tokyo for 5 years. Now I'm based in Leyton now. I like it here, few really nice parks like Wanstead park and Hollow Ponds but hardly any English people down here. Maybe Borehamwood and Barnet might be more prittier than here but East London is more fun and interesting I guess. I can go to Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Canada Water places like that. My favourite places. 😃

Hi, I've just stumbled across your videos and I absolutely love them and love the concept. I'm also a little jealous as it's very similar to something I've wanted to put together for a while but have never actually done. So hats off to you sir.. I just wanted to add a little bit of information about Barnet church during the War of the Roses in the Battle of Barnet. the church courtyard was the scene of a famous battle.. The position of the church at the top of the hill was a perfect lookout position as you would have had a clear view for miles of what is now The A1000 and the road leading to and from London. Beneath the church there are tunnels that lead to and from the pub situated across the road. it is said that it was I get away tunnel, however more than likely, as most of the more important generals would often frequent there, and so it was tunnel used to go from the pub to promptly and undetected, prepare for battle. The castle situated next to the college, wasn't actually part of the college and was used as offices. One of my friends was a trainee accountant there. Another great spot in Barnet is the Hadley Wpoods. It's situated and runs from behind New Barnet, up to High Barnet, There is a large lake which was restored and is situated next to what i suppose is a bat sanctuary or a protected area occupied by 1000s of Bats. Late sumer evening sunsets can be cool and creepy. Within the woods there are a set of trees that are in a tooth brush formation which I also believe was significant in the Battle of Barnet.

I doubt very much that you saw a pirate's grave. The skull & crossbones are a common symbol of death and are often seen on gravestones. Their use is connected to the belief that come the Resurrection, God would need only the skull and both femurs to recreate the body of a deceased person. This is the reason why in ossuaries these are the only bones to be preserved following a clearout of an overcrowded graveyard. The remaining bones would be piled into a heap and set alight; this was called a bonefire, from which is derived the modern bonfire. As usual, this was a hugely enjoyable walk through an area's history.

As an expatriate of England who grew up in Barnet, I can tell you that the location you refer to is Brewer’s Pond on Hadley Green Road. Not to be confused with the smaller Hadley Duck Pond about a quarter mile away. As the name suggests, on the other side of the brick wall was housed a brewery that is since long gone but the pond remains a sanctuary for ducks, geese and swans. Despite its proximity to the constant traffic of the A1000 it is a tranquil place where you can peacefully enjoy nature while seated on the park bench overlooking the pond. The last time I visited this locale was eleven years ago on a visit to Barnet to see my dying father. I only mention it because while seated on this bench, I was taken aback by the rather extraordinary sight of the birds slowly waddling over to me one by one, possibly hoping to be fed, but then settling to roost around me causing a passing lady dog walker to quietly comment on the calming effect I seemed to have over our feathered friends. The incident clearly sits with me to this day.

My mother had found an Edward VIII clear "pressed glass" commemorative bowl (or plate, whatever) on a trip to England. She knocked it off a shelf one day and of course it was smashed into small bits. In 2014 my family went to London on holiday, and she asked if I could get another one. I said yes, thinking that there was 0% chance I would find one, but my daughter and I walked into an antique shop over in the Brick Lane area and there was one of the exact same plates sitting on a shelf for sale. I think my mom broke that one too.
