In our new episode "Where Is Our Tax Money Going?", Jon asks Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, why our tax system is so broken and how we make systemic changes that will make it more fair and accessible for taxpayers - and less profitable for middlemen and lobbyists.

I see. You are looking at the claim incorrectly. The Representative is a person, who gets to believe any batshit idea they were already in favor of or can be convinced to support. The people get to vote for who they want to represent them, and periodically the 'sitting' gets removed for ie having voted against a human right. The Representative is not supposed to be representative of all the people of their constituency. If a Rep/Sen/Gov were to do that with a district that is highly diversified ethnically, split fiscally, divided equally across religion/faith, poor and wealthy they would not be able to form an opinion on which to vote on any bill. This is why candidates make their campaign pages cover all these issues that you may not care about... someone else does, and this issues may arise at some point over the 2-6years they are in term. The candidate is informing you "this is how I plan to vote" and your job is to take in all of that and choose the one that best represents you in the the most categories.

It's not even a question that needs to be avoided or provides benefit for avoiding it. The basis of the question is "Is the way things are being run right now giving fair representation to the people, or is it weighted heavily in favor of lobbyists?" The simplest answer would have been "It's probably not ideal, there are probably improvements that could be made". Relatively neutral, answers the question any further follow-ups could be answered with an "I don't know, I'm not currently informed enough" and it wouldn't be infuriating. An admission would be made, but nothing would change and no one would really look bad. Instead we have someone doing acrobatics to avoid swinging at the biggest, easiest softball lob of a question in hopes that it will be called a ball, but ends up being a 130mph fastball dead-center and 2.5ft over the plate when it is asked for the third time.

I think she knows how broken the system is but she also knows how impossible it is to make the sort of changes Jon is advocating for. She is working within the system that exists with all of its limitations. I'm not sure what Jon would like to see but consider that a system that worked faster to resolve these issues could also be turned around to do other things faster like abolish the right to have an abortion nationwide. I think that's one of the main reasons there isn't any real change in the system over time. Even getting rid of the filibuster is a questionable act because of what might happen down the road.
@squarerootofdragon5380
@squarerootofdragon5380 Год назад
@@nanoflower1 I think the issue isn't that she is working within the system, so much as she is unlikely to want to improve it if she gets the opportunity. If Democrats took control of 80% of congress and the senate, they would have the power to make the democracy more representative (without e.g. endangering abortion rights), but people like her would still refuse to take the leap. They would take that 80% majority as proof that the system works and doesn't need changing, rather than acknowledge the once in a generation chance to fix it.

Revisiting this years later and I still love how she's just SO excited that a decade, hundreds of people, tons of hard work, and a well-connected multimillionaire celebrity spokesman is what it took. She's 100% cool with it. The 80yr-old (17 Term. 17!) multimillionaire congressbeing thinks this system works juuuuust fine.

My insurance covered my breast cancer removal and chemotherapy but nooo dentistry coverage for the side effects of the morrow get sucked out of my teeth in the process. My teeth are now breaking off and I’m losing weight. Maybe there’s a blessing in there somewhere. It also burned out my eyesight to where I needed glasses but they don’t cover eyes either.

This is why Bernie couldn't win because he thought he could take something like the Democratic party and steer it instead of doing the work that will probably not be finished by him that will probably have to be given to those like the squad and AOC a building something from the ground up while Republicans are actively against the people the leadership of Democrats don't want change because a certain part of their party the rich part benefits from the status quo

It's sad really. She is the chair of the appropriations committee, which decides which proposals get funding, a position that's decided almost entirely by seniority. Basically every chair of that committee since 1930 had served in the House for more than 20 years before becoming chair. I imagine at least some of them started out as reformers but by that point in their career they had no appetite for anything other than incremental changes. We need to abolish the seniority system.

She suggests NOTHING in the way of a process that would change the fact that the public is not sitting in the room...just excuses. Do lobbyists have to keep fighting for a chair at the table? NO! But We the People have to fight tooth and nail and often get cuffed and arrested at the Capitol just trying to be heard. It's obscene.

It is Frustrating there is such a disconnect/ blindness from the people to elected officials. In many ways they take a bad system and made it worse. I could sign up with my local insurance person at any time of the year. Now I have to call or get on a government website, make sure it's in the time of year that only you can sign up. Deal with a insurance company and government office depending on the issue. How much does this all cost in the end?

I think the crux of this is that even if all political parties involved start the process with the people's best interests in mind, it's impossible for the outcome to still have those people's best interest when the room is filled with lobbyists who DO NOT have those same interests. Why is lobbying still legal? Because in order to change that you'd have to start a process to change it.. filled with a room full of lobbyists lol. It's like asking politicians to voluntarily campaign solely from their own pocket. Never gonna happen.

Somewhere along the way we the public forgot that our politicians should not have a friendly relationship with the business class because a lot of them make rules that are supposed to referee the game of business their relationship is supposed to be adversarial but the business class realize somewhere along the way the best way to beat your adversary is the slowly turn them into you by making sure those politicians are now from the same business class if that makes any sense
